Recruiting worries

I may be misremembering here, but wasn't there an article in the DPost at the beginning of the summer wherein some recruits said that they stopped hearing from the CU staff at some point and it was strongly implied that Hawk and Co. quit on the recruiting trail when they thought that they were fired?

If so, and the junk about hawk being told he is gone unless he has a miracle season is also true, what makes us sure that the CU coaching staff is working the recruiting trail as hard as they should be at this point in the season?

Do I believe that much of the staff quit recruiting last year? For the most part, yes. On top of that, no visitors for the Nebraska game is unheard of.

That does suggest that a similar thing could happen this year.

My read on the situation is that there are a handful of guys who are being recruited very hard and a number of guys we are in active contact with. Not just 2011 guys, but also some 2012 prospects. But this coaching staff is gambling a bit. Rather than take commitments from certain players, they are banking on turning the season around and being able to attract higher caliber prospects once they're off the hot seat and are talking about bowl games and competing for conference championships.

And, frankly, if they don't have that turnaround there will be different coaches with different recruiting priorities in Boulder anyway. I'd rather not have the new guys saddled with having to break agreements with borderline players who don't fit the new systems.

Why all the concern, were only 81st in the nation, dead last in the Big II in recruiting??

What ITB says is the reality of it. Don't look for anything big in the near future.

God...how far we have fallen, and the hole keeps getting bigger and bigger. I had thought after last season we were looking at least 2-3 years to get the program back on its feet after Danny departs. I am now guessing 4-5 years.

The silver lining for this year's class is that it was always going to be a small class anyway. It is very reasonable to expect a new coach to come in and pick up some quality players late. Hawkins is actually helping out a bit here by being so picky. The next coach is going to have official visits and scholarships to work with.

The bigger issue for the next coach is going to be getting to work on the 2012 class, which will be a very important class for the future of the program. We graduate a huge junior class after next season, so we have a chance to bring in a really good class if we can get the right coach.

I think the list of this week's visitors confirms to me that some coaches are not pulling their weight.

Hagan, Cabral and Ambrose all seem to be working it hard. Kiesau already got his guys and is focused where he should be. Otherwise... meh.

Id really like to get McClure, secondary worries me after this year. Glad Pugh transferred in.

how the hell is the fact that hawkins is literally refusing to do half his job NOT immediate grounds for firing? our administration is a joke

Let's be honest, the recruiting that so many people slammed barnett for is no better at this present time. Georgia coming in, 1990 NC team being honored and that's all you could bring in? LAZY

Eff. Last night could have been a showcase game for lots of recruits. I like the visitors we got in, but we should have had more. Like Nik said, outside of a few coaches, we are not getting the effort needed on the recruiting trail.

yes, this year and the previous year are not great in terms of recruiting. However, this year was expected to be bad with the coaching situation. That's not to say that the staff isn't underperforming, which they are in terms of recruiting, but coming off a losing season and with a coach on the hot seat, limited recruiting results was anticipated.

I slammed GB for recruiting back in the day, because I didn't like his recruiting. He went after only a few blue chips kids, when he was winning for the most part. If Hawk were winning, I think he'd be doing a great job recruiting - the guy is a good recruiter in my opinion...just not a good coach. Yes, we should have had a dozen kids there last night, but oh well...I'm not looking forward to this year's recruiting until we get a new coach.

Look, I'm really happy that Kelly committed.

However, the more I think about it, the more upset I get at Hawk and staff for not getting more recruits to the Georgia game. They knew well in advance that we're celebrating the National Championship, and they didn't push the game. What the ****? This was a huge game that the knew fans would show up for. Even if the game sucked, the other festivities would have been great. It's so stupid that we had only five visitors. You mean you couldn't convince Dorian Brown early early on to come visit this past weekend? Willingham couldn't come this weekend? It's just so pathetic that they didn't make this last weekend into a big recruiting one...

They pushed. They were trying for 12-15 visitors. Some had scheduling conflicts. Some weren't all that interested in using an official to CU while the coaching future was so up in the air. It is what it is.

P.S. Willingham and other locals made unofficial visits.

It's been said ad nauseum, but this is where the real harm in keeping Dan around for another year is (I'm still assuming he's canned after this year). We set everything back, especially recruiting.
