Mandel's Take on CU-UGA

For some reason I'm still surprised at how poorly CU is thought of nationally:

I'm done defending embattled Georgia coach Mark Richt. Even with star receiver A.J. Green back in the lineup (and making ridiculous, falling-down, one-handed catches), the Bulldogs couldn't even beat hapless Colorado, falling to 1-4 with a 29-27 loss. Caleb King's fumble in the final two minutes cost a shot at a possible game-winning field goal. "It's bad luck, man. Nothing's falling our way," said Green. It's going to take more than luck for UGA to avoid a losing season.

Desperately seeking success: Does anyone need a win more than Mark Richt? (Don't say Tim Brewster, because his fate is sealed.) With preseason sleeper Georgia falling to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in SEC play, Richt has resorting to motivating his players by telling them "it could get worse." That's a fact. Losing to Mississippi State is bad. Losing to Colorado would be unforgiveable.

Just rewatch our nationally televised games the past two years. No more surprise.

Stinks but the media are more fickle than the fans When CU strings together a couple of winning seasons we will see less of this. I always laugh the media brings up "The Infamous Fifth Down" because if it was such a big deal then why did the AP vote us the National Champion? Most of these guys don't even watch the games and just go by previous years performance and stats. Look at that yoda looking MF Ubben - he voted Texas number 17 even after the OU loss.

Meh, what are you gonna do, we haven't given the East Coast press too much to get excited about.

The national media's treatment of CU is out of line with where it should be. We haven't been good, but they act like we're bottom feeders. We have never finished last in the Big 12 (or even the North). We won our Division 4/10 years during the decade that just ended and our Conference once. Yes, we had an ugly "scandal" and a difficult rebuilding process with a coach who wasn't capable of delivering a quick turnaround (and may have been a disaster hire - we'll find out). We have only been to 1 bowl game the past 4 years. But we are also 3-1 and were good enough to beat a ranked team each of the previous 3 years. We're certainly not as bad as the perception. It's not even close.

CU desperately needs to hire a PR firm for the AD. Plati and Bohn are not getting it done on their own. And while I will blame Hawk for recruiting, the AD needs to share a small part of the blame for letting other Big 12 ADs so effectively smear CU's reputation in the media.

This is not so much a function of CU, but a function of the coach. We have been a completely hapless team since Hawk took over. Call me crazy, but even if I were in the media I wouldn't be giving CU too much love yet. I would have to see quite a bit more given Hawk's track record.

Unless you're Nebraska, you have to win meaningful games against quality opponents to receive good press. IF we beat Mizzou, there should be some good press. Until then, we don't really deserve it.

Why? Who have they beaten this year? They barely squeaked by San Diego State at home. We're the first real test on the schedule for this season, IMO.

Georgia gift wrapped CU the win Saturday. Yes the Buffs played better than we are used to but CU still was about to lose by 1 point.

In order to gain Cred with the National Media you have to get noticed. In order to get noticed you have to win and win often and win big games. We haven't done that in a long time. While the win against Georgia is nice they are a bad 1-4 team. We got smoked by the only ranked team we played this year and those two factors leave doubt. By way of comparison Boise State has been winning and so they get the benefit on the doubt.

I would advise all of you not to drink the Koolaid yet. I still have doubts about Hawkins & Co. The Georgia team was not that great. Beat Missouri and I might begin to believe.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Cal was not ranked when we played them & they certainly aren't ranked right now.

They're a Big 12 team Hawkins has not beaten once in his previous four years here. And it's a road game. A win would turn some heads in that respect, especially an October win that ends another team's undefeated record.

As much as I agree, we were fortunate to come away with a win, I always hate when people say gift wrap. Turnovers are part of the game. Personally I give credit for Beatty and Major for making the hit and recovery. The team found a way to win. As Mac used to say, "They rose to the occasion!"

The national media pays attention to nationally televised games and to those games that draw national attention. When has CU been on national TV the past few years, Toledo, Nebraska, Missouri. When have we gotten notice nationally, losing to teams that get notice for beating AQ teams, CSU, Montana State, Toledo, etc.

Hawk's record as a HC at Colorado has not given the national media any reason to think of us as anything other than a bottom feeder. If a new coach comes in and wins some games including games against teams recognized as being at least decent then the perception will start to change. Beat a couple of ranked teams on national TV along with a winning record and a decent bowl game or two and all of the sudden CU will be percieved as a quality program again.

If we beat Mizzou, we are likely ranked, fwiw

I don't know about ranked, I bet we receive votes, but are outside of the top 25. From where CU started the season, and after the 52-7 loss, it will take more than 3 straight wins to get ranked.

I think we need a little help for that to happen.

If we win at #24 Missouri, we could be ranked if some other teams ranked 20-25 or receiving votes lose and our previous opponents show well.

CSU over vote getter Air Force at the Springs would help us a lot.
Cal needs to beat UCLA in Berkeley.
Hawaii needs to win at Fresno State to get to 4-2.
Georgia needs to win at home versus Tennessee.

Then,

#20 South Carolina needs to lose at home to Alabama
#24 Florida State needs to lose at Miami
#25 Northwestern could help us by blowing one at home against Purdue
Kansas State needs to lose at home to Nebraska

I still don't know if that's enough, but it will at least have us knocking on the door. A follow-up win against Baylor would almost surely get us ranked.

Certainly the last 5 years have been bad, but frankly, every big game we had on TV this decade has sucked. How many conference championship games did we get bonked in the early part of this decade? When you play a conference championship game and get beat 70-3 and you also have your head coach defend himself against a girl kicker on ESPN with his foot in his mouth, your program gets looked down upon.

It will take one good season to get the Mojo back. Just one....

I do believe 2001 is this decade.

If Beatty and Major actually hit him... I might acquiesce to your implication that we had something to do with it...... I might even buy into the fact that the Georgia QB was so frightened by the possibility of the onslaught of the infamous rushing the field CU students that he just broke down and fumbled.....

That is what I am going with....

No we're not that bad, but it's all relative. We were consistently a ranked team throughout the 90's and then had the big year in 2001, followed by 4 decent-to-good years before things got bad, so it's easy and fashionable to say how bad CU is since we've been essentially irrelevant the past 4+ seasons, especially the past 2. You never hear anyone bashing football programs like Iowa State because they were never relevant to begin with.

They'll respect us when we beat 'braska to finish the regular season at 10-2. :wink2:
