Henderson on 87.7 last night

Listening to FM87.7 last night driving home, and Les and the other two were talking to Henderson from The Post about CU. Henderson posed the question about whether they thought Hawk would keeps his job if he wins all his Big xii home games, and the Kansas game on the road. It would give the team an 8-4 record, and most likely a decent bowl game. There was a bit of mumbling, and then they turned around and posed the question to Henderson, to which Henderson said he spoke with Bohn, but things were said off the record. He then tried to find the right words to use, and basically laid out what he said Hawk would have to do to keep his job:

- Show that the team can be competitive on the road against the better division foes. Games must be competitive throughout the game. Last second garbage time TD’s to make the score close when it was lopsided the rest of the game doesn’t count. He cannot have another Cal type showing, and he has to win at least 1 road game (which should be a gimmie with Kansas)

- He needs to win all his conference games at home. NO excuses!

- Assuming the other two occur; Hawk needs to have a good showing at the bowl game, and most likely win. A bad loss would cost him his job.

This, and every Saturday going forward, will be a big weekend for Hawk if he wants to keep his job.

Those goals are totally reasonable for me. Don't want Hawk long term but if he can hit all of those goals outlined above I think he deserves one more year before getting canned. I would be suprised if he does though so not worried about having Hawk around next year :)

I hate Henderson... I don't like that he is gaining traction locally

when we get blown out Saturday none of this will matter.

I'd add that our recruiting must show marked improvement. I know that, given the numbers this year, we aren't going to be ranked high even if we get some great recruits. But if I were Bohn, I'd have some sort of metric on which to judge recruiting success.

Our class ranking will be about the same as last season imo. Barring a miracle, this will be another subpar year on the recruiting trail.

I also don't think even a good recruiting year will have any effect on Hawks job status. He has had the time to bring in his kids. Now he has to do something with them...Besides losing.

A lot more should go into it than just the wins and losses scenario outlined by Henderson. Recruiting, passion, representing the university, assisting in fund raising, learning how to speak in public and to boosters, etc.

Then on top of all that there is the issue of opportunity cost. If Bohn has someone lined up or in mind that is of the caliber I want to see (Mac, Calhoun, you guys are better at the good candidates) then go get him. I think if one things is clear, no matter how well Hawk does this year there are probably better coaches available to us by the end of the season.

No. Two more years of poor recruiting classes because he is a lame duck coach will just make it impossible for new coach. I say he needs to be done this season.

In what world?

I think it would be a HUGE mistake to fire Hawkins AFTER the bowl game (assuming for the sake of argument that he goes 8-4 and goes to a bowl game).

Firing AFTER the bowl game would mean the Buffs have basically ONE (1) month to conduct a coaching search and finalize recruiting with the new coach. Bad bad bad idea, IMO.

Either fire Hawkins at the conclusion of the season (i.e. after Nebraska) or not at all.

no way should Bohn wait to see how the Buffs do in a bowl game-
Lets say CU goes 7-4 and plays Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl in NYC...
that game is on Dec 30th- waiting till January to get a coach would be stupid when
you can get one a month earlier...

IMHO- fire Hawk right after the loss to NU & have Cabral lead the team for the bowl

so why is he held to these standards NOW? what about the past 4 season Bohn.

Bohn would have had him gone last November. If you want to bitch at somebody for him still being here (and why wouldn't you??) look higher.

IMO, this thread just confirms the MONUMENTAL stupidity of not doing what needed to be done last year. Even if Hawk does well this year, virtually nobody (I see you DBT :smile2:)believes in the guy anymore. Perception is reality. Notwithstanding, if he wins 8 in the regular season, I don't see how you can show him the door...which merely confirms my first point.

A 8-4 record is reasonable and that would include sweeping the home games and winning one game on the road. @MU, @OU, and @NU would be difficult games to win so @KU is very reasonable. I had the Buffs circled for a W over KU before this season and the 8-4 record (3-1 record with the lone loss at Cal). So far, I'm on track.

I agree 100%. A 7-5 or even 8-4 record with this not-so-difficult schedule does nothing to convince me that he is suddenly capable of coaching us to better things in the future. But I have a very hard time believing that he will be shown the door with an 8-4 record. even 7-5 I believe puts the odds in favor of him staying.

Please tell me I'm wrong.

sorry you are not wrong, 8 wins and hawk will keep his job.

Well, last year was the golden opportunity to move in a different direction HC wise. NOBODY, not named Hawkins, DiStephano or Benson, believed Hawk should stay. Now, if Hawk somehow manages 8 W's, or 7 and beats OU and NU along the way, they are saddled with a guy who is a PR nightmare, sure to further alienate the donors and fans and a perennial "coaches hot seat list" member. Recruiting will continue to be an issue and long term prospects grim. The admin. screwed this one up about as badly as the circumstances would allow, all because Benson was afraid of the legislature and didn't believe he could explain the difference in private money versus public money for the buyout.

he will be 3-3 in 2 weeks

does anyone really see the buffs going 5-1 in the final 6 games?

TT and BU are goig to be tougher games than most think. Both teams can score and do so through the air, or with a running QB. CU defense does well versus the run, but air attacks and running QB's have been more problematic.

TT and BU have solid coaching staffs, and neither are unbeatable, but CU will have to score more than 20, most likely, to beat either team.

ISU and KjSU will be challenges as well.

8-4 is still a long ways away, so I'm not going to get all worked up over an HC change just yet. I always want the Buffs to win.

I'm truly getting sick of being painted incorrectly. I wanted a change last year as much as anyone. What pissed me off was all of the bashing before and after and just some of the stupid things people would say. I didn't believe then or now that airing dirty laundry was or is productive. For instance, to accuse the administration of "MONUMENTAL stupidity" is easy to do from where you sit. But niether you nor I know, fully, all of the circumstances that went into the decision. It may be fair to call it a bad decision or whatever. But using the term "MONUMENTAL stupidity" is grand standing.

Certainly there are a lot of games left to be played.

Perhaps, at this point, 8-4 should be the threshold. The four remaining home games are all definitely winnable. The game at Kansas now appears definitely winnable. Given the current perception of the Big 12 landscape - I think anything LESS THAN 8 wins would be absolutely unacceptable.

I think that 8 wins - with the possibility of 9 wins should the team win a bowl game - is more than likely grounds for an extension for Coach Hawkins.

First bold, I put the smiley as a tip off that I was joking because I know your position and how some have given you grief over it without justification. Next time I'll try to remember that approach is likely to be ill received.

Second bold. How do you know what I know? Bottom line is you have no idea other than what I say here. Aside from what I may know or not know, I am entitled to my opinion just like everyone else. It was a devestatingly bad decision. Donations are down, the fan base is less than happy, season tickets are down, all likely a direct result of doing the opposite of what very nearly every commentator and fan thought would be done. So yeah, I don't think it is a stretch to say it was a stupid decision. I am thouroughly pleased the team is 3-1, so I guess that could be seen as the one positive happening, and it is a big one. I hope it continues and I eat a big plate of crow when CU passes the 8W mark. I just want to see them win and be competitive. Starting in November of last year, I no longer believed Hawk was the guy to take them there. I am waiting to be proven wrong, and I hope I am.

I wouldn't go so far as to give him an extention. He gets to keep his job for the time being.

If Hawk went 8-4, I would be impressed. I could see a one year extension if they could renegotiate the buyout to a more favorable stance for CU. Then if Hawk kept winning for a couple of more years, you could just extend him one year at a time until there was some confidence he really had turned the corner.

CU has played nobody this year. The got pounded on the road by a mid conference Cal team and beat a bottom of SEC Georgia team that fumbled within 35 yard FG range to win the game at home.

CSU sucks and Hawaii never plays well due to the travel.

Hawkins can prove to me that the team is going in the right direction this week at Mizzou. Don't get punk'd by the Tigers again on the road, maybe have the team in position for a chance to win and I'm good with not giving him his pink slip for another week.

If CU gets crushed by Mizzou Hawkins should have his office packed on Monday.
