Interesting quote from Hansen

Hmmmm

"I was throwing the ball away but we had a receiver in the area, but he didn`t get out," Hansen said. "That was a rough play call. We`re on the one and we`re running a route with one guy pretty much and that guy was taken away so I had to throw the ball away. That was the only play. So that`s just a tough spot to be at."

Haha, I never made it to this level playing at this level of football, but you can't honestly tell me that they ran a play that only has the ability to throw it to ONE guy. I mean seriously, who designs a play like... Oh wait, never mind, they didn't fire him last year when they should have.

Of course Hansen was yanked after that play. "Throwing it away" is far too independent-minded for Coach Hawkins' QB System. He should be forcing it into coverage instead. No wonder he was benched!

I want Hawk fired as much as the next guy, but that was early in the game. First quarter? That made it 2-0 MU. So no, he didn't get yanked after that play. The crime here is that they designed a play with one receiver and he could not get out either. SO the QB is in a no-win proposition. Why, if they are designing that play, don't they roll the QB out so he can have the option to run or throw it away? They put him in a no win situation. Not TH's fault there. That lies squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

Shocking! The coaching staff makes a mistake?!

I am confused..... maybe the receiver ran the wrong route... the RB did NOT get held, the TE wasn't going that far, and the wide receiver was on the other side....

There wasn't one receiver going out... he did have 3 options.... just maybe he focused on 1.

It was a play action if I remember. Deehan over-committed to the block and got lost in the muck, while never getting out. The RB was lost in the pile. I don't remember seeing the WR on the other side, so you could be right there.

You said you liked the play when we were in the chat. :wink2: I argued it was not a good call given our position on the field and risk to a safety via the penalty. They were selling run on a pass play.

That play, in my mind, sums up our caliber of coaching the last 5 years. Screwed.

Whatever was supposed to happen, everything about this play was terrible and sums up what has been happening at CU for the last 5 years.

In any event if you run a PA at your 1 you should have someone down field that either beats the one on one or easy to throw the ball away making it look like he was going there.

Yeah, I did - and I was oh so wrong. After seeing it a few times I understand why it wasn't good.... although it could have worked if Deehan hadn't mucked it up.

I thought the play calling all game was bad. I guess on that play, the intent was to maximize the number of blockers. The tight end was supposed to peel out and he didn't. I don't know if it was a brain lock on his part or he just couldn't get out of the traffic. At any rate, Tyler needed to scramble, get outside the tackle and either run or get rid of it. I had thought the game was "slowing down" for Tyler. But yesterday, it seems to have speeded up again.

If there was a wr on the left he could have thrown it to that side and it would have been end of story. I like Hansen and I boil this down to him being put in a poor position by the coaches coupled with a maturity issue in terms of field experience. I bet he never makes that mistake again having learned it the hard way.

By no means did the play decide the game but it did help set the tone for the game. We are still missing some important pieces on this squad and on the sidelines.

It just occurred to me that I can not even name the players because there are no names on the back of the jerseys

I am not sure that Deehan mucked it up. You can't run a slow developing play when you are on your one yard line. So maybe he didn't release early enough, he still would not have been anywhere near the vicinity where Hansen could throw it away. It was a terrible play to call on your 1.

Our offense is a Mickey Mouse offense plain and simple. Some guys run this way, some guys run that way - no one is fooled - it's just guys running around.

"We like to run around a lot and we're cute, but sometimes we chew things up and pee on the rug." Pretty much sums up of offensive schemes for the last 5 years.

From what I remember there was a WR at the top of the field, but was doubled. Deehan was taking forever to get out of the pile and Speedy was just kind of wandering around at the LOS. Tyler was already at the very back of the end zone so scrambling wasn't really a good option. Bad play call.

keisau was awful last night. I saw nothing in the playbook like the georgia game. Why is he so reluctant to throw the ball more than 20 yds anymore?

Despite the play call, did Tyler not know there wasn't a receiver out there? Either throw it out of bounds near your receiver on the left side of the field (which, btw, Hansen never throws down field to the left from the pocket...) or throw it at the feet of Deehan.

I think he just panicked, but I remember seeing #2 Patterson being near the sideline where he threw it, maybe he thought he was down there?

^^ he should know where his receivers are....that is the point of specific routes.

Whatever, Hansen is not that good. Anyone know what high school the Hawkins will coach at?

You make a good point. Where will Hawkins land after this debacle? I wouldn't hire him if I were the AD of a DIII program.

@ Rugged - yeah I'm not defending him if that's what he was trying to do, just offering a possible explanation. From what I could remember, his first read was to go to the WR, but since he was doubled he checked down to Deehan/Speedy. He probably couldn't even see Deehan and who knows what Speedy was doing, saw a guy heading at him full steam and just tried to throw it away. Not his best moment to be sure, but I can't say it's the worst safety I've seen a Hawkins coached QB take.

@ FrankRizzo - I don't get why everyone says that Hansen "isn't that good". We know he's not Tim Tebow dude, but he's the best we have. He's certainly a lot better than Cody and at this point that's enough for me. On occasion the coaches let Tyler off the leash and he makes some plays and helps the offense. This offseason hopefully Hirschman has been preparing and is ready to challenge him, or maybe Berglund or Sherry come in and impress. Who knows, but at this point it's Cody or Tyler.

"It" doesn't happen for QBs in their first year starting. "It" didn't happen for Kordell as I recall. It takes awhile to be comfortable and confident in the pocket and have a command of the game. I think Hansen has potential and he learned a gigantic lesson about standing in the end zone from that mistake.

If you watched SC and Alabama yesterday you saw an even more highly recruited QB make an even stupider mistake. Be thankful it cost us only 2 instead of 7.

It was an awful play call. There is no two ways about it. Why are you calling a slow developing, one receiver route in the end zone? At that point we should be playing to have enough room the punt the ball or at least call a passing play to has a chance to succeed. These coaches are clueless and they put TH in an impossible situation all game long.

I believe the play call was the same as the one that worked against Georgia. Stacked up with eight or nine in the box, Hansen faked the handoff, and threw deep to his only wide receiver on the play, which was Will Jefferson. It worked against the Bulldogs, but - gosh! - Missouri had two defenders against Jefferson, and Hansen had nowhere to go with the ball ...

I'm sorry, but this one's on Hansen. There was one receiver in the route because it was a max protect play. Which, that close to the end zone, was actually a good decision based on our offensive line. Every team calls one receiver routes out of their own end zone all the time for just that reason. In that situation, it's on Hansen to throw the ball away if the option isn't there, it's not that hard, QBs do it all the time. Hansen f'd up and picked up a grounding.
