Random thoughts about AFA's Calhoun as the next CU coach

NashBuff

I had this random thought about Callhoun as the next CU coach.

Anyone notice the number of stories about Hawk's players not getting into CU or struggling in the classroom? Calhoun has to recruit some of the best student athletes out there and he has done a good job as a head coach. Part of AFA's success might be due to the military culture up there at the academcy in COS. That brought me back to Gary Barnett coming out of Northwestern and Northwestern is an academic heavy school and Barnett succeeded out there in addition to at CU. This is why Callahon makes a lot of sense for the CU job in this situation.

I don't think the other widely rumored canadiates out there could do as good of a job as Callahoun could do at CU.

Thoughts?

He would be like having four men in one....

The changes in name spelling seemed to be slowly evolving to CALLAHAN! :scared2:

When you go to Air Force, even on a football scholarship don't you have to serve afterward? If yes, then the reason why those kids are going there in the first place is because they want to dutifully serve their country. I don't think that translates into recruiting success here at CU. I think everybody is getting aw-struck by the fact that they are ranked. Go back and look at their schedule last year. Who did they beat of substance, and who have they beaten this year of substance? And mark my words, they might lose their next three games. There is no expectation there to win, so when they string a couple together Calhoun is the best coach out there and should come to CU. Not buying it right now. The expectations and the expected talent level at CU are a lot greater then anything he has seen or done.

I'd rather see CU relax its academic standards for athletes to level the playing field with our competition. Cal has figured it out - they are a top academic institution and you barely need to be able to read to get an athletic scholarship (see: Kidd, Jason and Lynch, Marshawn).

Very true about that...how good is the academic support that Cal gives versus what CU gives?

My buddy went to the AFA on an athletic scholarship and he didn't give a flying **** about serving his country. He wanted a good education for free.

Also, I remember reading somewhere that the academies get two extra AC's, and for all intents and purposes, there are no scholly limits. In other words, they can appoint 30 FB candidates with full scholly's, "encourage" those guys to play FB, and cut down the roster as needed. That is why very few academy coaches move to another school and have success. Really, Paul Johnson is the only one I remember going from an academy to a "regular" school and doing well. Ken Hatfield bombed at Arky, Charlie Weatherbie didn't exactly set the world on fire either. FWIW.

And I think Paul Johnson just had a quirky offense that took a lot of teams by surprise last year. Team are starting to figure them out, 2 losses and close wins.

Virtually The entire citizenry of the state of Colorado including fans media and decision makers appears to be infected with a universal provincialism that I find baffling.

The same geniuses clamoring for Calhoun now were worshipping Joe Glenn and Dave Logan in the last go rounds.

Believe it or not there is a whole wide world of incredibly talented coaches with no connection to Colorado.

In fact the last actual home run hire was the d-coordinator and top recruiter at Michigan and he had no previous ties to the state.

If they bring Mac back I will support him because of who he is and what he has done. Otherwise they need to think beyond the borders and conduct a real search. Limiting the field primarily to local heroes is not smart.

I dunno, that guy at Mines is pretty good, not to mention the Douglas County HS coach....plus no per diem on the search...

I think it's pretty easy to run a clean program, keep kids eligible, and have a disciplined team when it's a military academy regardless of the ability of the coach. If anything, coaching at AF artificially inflates Calhoun's abilities due to the inherent discipline and work ethic. I think he'd have a much harder time at a less rigid institute.

i thought tuition at the service academies was free for every student that gets in. was i wrong?

No, you're not wrong. There is no tuition or room/board at any of the academies. It's hard as hell to get in, and it's a brutal curriculum, but there is no cost to the student.

This is actually why I'm a little leery of Calhoun. The student atheletes are highly self motivated people who had to work their butts off to get in the academy. Most d1 student athletes are not quite as motivated in the academic realm. Just not sure if it works the same. Kind of get the Bzdelik recall on this one.

There are 3 Navy coaches who had a winning record there since 1972:
  • George Welsh had a ton of success at Virginia after leaving Navy.
  • Paul Johnson has had a ton of success at Georgia Tech.
  • Ken Niumatalolo is still at Navy.
Army hasn't really had anyone that won:
  • Except for Jim Young, but his BCS success came at previous stops and he finished up at Army.
  • Army has tried and failed to repeat that model with guys like Bobby Ross.

Air Force is a weird situation since Fisher DeBerry was there for over 20 years before retiring a Falcon. Calhoun was the next coach hired and we know of his success. The 2 previous head coaches had losing records at AFA. Previously:

  • Ken Hatfield went 26-32-1 over 5 years at AFA, but then coached Arkansas for 6 years going 55-17-1 with SWC titles his last 2 seasons there. After that, he went to Clemson and 32-13-1 over 4 years with one ACC title.
  • Bil Parcells coached 1 season and went 3-8. I'm not sure what happened to him after. :wink2:
  • The previous AFA coach, Ben Martin, coached there for 20 years with about a .500 record before retiring as a Falcon.

Bottom line: I'm not buying that service academy coaches don't have success elsewhere. Seems like a great training ground to me.

Did you know that Bill Parcells was once the head coach at the Air Force Adacemy? Seriously, he was. I think he was the coach just before Ken Hatfield. He was only there for a year or two, and his record stank.

edit: dammit, nik beat me to it. Once again my brilliant trivial mind is foiled.

I'm beginning to think my theory has a few holes.....

I'd rather have a burrito and watch someone other than DH coach the Buffs.....

yeah, even super dave logan is likely to outcoach dh but that's not setting the bar very high. i bet a bean and cheese burrito could coach circles around dh. i bet if you sent dh on a burrito run during the game, the team would be more effective.

Would he have to cross a freeway?....Oh that was bad...

For the 1000th time, we need someone who is from OUTSIDE of colorado.

edit: or has at least spent a significant portion of life/career there to build connections across the country.

I agree- I looked at what would have been considered 'signature' wins for Calhoun up to this point.
It's either last years 'Armed Forces Bowl' beating then 25th ranked Houston or a win at a 3 win Notre Dame
in 2007. That's it.
