BU fan's take on your team

BU fan here. Posted this on Baylorfans and was curious about your thoughts. Please let me know what you agree/disagree with. Hopefully its a good game and none of this is intended as smack.

For reference I saw almost all of CU-UGA and the dvr got full at halftime of Mizzou-CU. I know what happened in Berkeley but I didn't see it so I'm going off what I have seen.

Schedule- Not an easy one. They have beaten CSU, Hawaii, and UGA. Lost to Mizzou and been nuked by Jeff Tedford and Cal. CSU is a pushover but the other 2 are not. Hawaii has no D but CU was able to limit them for the most part. They had a blown coverage on an 80 yard completion but apart from that they were under 4 per play against an offense that lit up USC.

QB- Hansen is athletic in the mold of a Zac Robinson, Colt McCoy, or Jake Plummer. He's not a burner but can make solid fakes and elude people in the run game. He had 3 key runs against UGA. UGA blitzed 6 guys vs a QB draw on a long run he had to help set up their first score and he also was able to shake a defender who got good pass pressure and scramble for a TD later. They will run option and qb reads on occasion so our guys need to be disciplined.
He makes ok decisions as the only pick I saw was a pass thrown behind his TE who tipped it in the air and UGA picked it. His accuracy is streaky so he's ok but not great.

RB- The main guy is rodney stewart. He's short, lightweight, and suprisingly tough to tackle. He's like Darren Sproles with a lower top speed. He came in and beat out Darrell Scott who was a top RB recruit and has made plays all through his career. That said their run game is decent but not elite. In the UGA game they had 47 carries for 235 and over 5 per carry. However if you take out the one 65 yard option play that UGA sent 2 guys after the QB on the numbers change dramatically. Without that run (and filtering out the QB runs) the CU non-qbs averaged 3.4 per carry.

Against Mizzou the overall stats were ok with 4.35 per RB carry but if you eliminate the one run before the half where Mizzou was in prevent (22 yard draw play) their average drops dramatically to 3.25 yards per non-qb carry. They didn't do much of anything against the Tigers.

I am very relieved we don't have to play against Lockridge (backup RB) who has game breaking speed.

Overall they have had a few big plays in the run game but really haven't just steamrolled anyone besides Hawaii who gave up similar average yards per carry to its other opponents.

WR- They have a couple athletic guys outside but their leader is Scotty McKnight. He's sure handed and is really a slower version of former Longhorn Jordan Shipley. He's got everything but freakish size/speed/leaping ability. Solid dependable guy.
They hit a lot of big plays vs a very aggressive UGA scheme. Our defensive scheme will be much less agressive so we will probably give up fewer big plays but handling the small ones will be huge for us. They hit a 46 yard play action bomb, 65 yard option play, 39 yard qb draw as their biggest.

TE- Good blocker and reciever. A lot like Biere for KU and Frosch for TCU.
OL- Best guy is Nate Solder the left tackle. They will be a challenge to go against.

DEFENSE- Best players on D are the 2 corners (Smith and Brown) and they have had all of their sacks the last 2 weeks come from Hartigan (Left End for their D) speed rushing around the opponent's right tackle. He never had a sack before that this season and is coming on strong. They have probably the best set of starting corners we will see outside of Austin, TX. They are legit and may even be better. They had a rough time vs AJ Green but RG3 will need to be on his game.

They have quick guys on the D-Line and they stunted, twisted, and shot them everywhere against the 2 teams I saw. They will put all 3 almost on one side of the O-line at times so they will do some crazy stuff and aren't afraid to blitz knowing Smith and Brown are behind them.

Linebackers are ok. Nothing special but solid guys who you have to contend with.
They run aggressive schemes and really let UGA's QB hurt them with his feet. He had 5 runs for 30 yards (no sacks included) and I can see RG3 having room if we have good protection.

Their D is solid and held their own against Mizzou and Hawaii reasonably well. I have heard Mizzou had greater success with their backup after Gabbert was hurt in their game. Franklin is by all accounts a more mobile option and if he did have more success that helps our prospects.

Special Teams- Their coverage units are awful. UGA and Mizzou had success on a regular basis going against them. They have a new kicker coming in so who knows what will happen now with him but they are nearly last in net punting. If we don't have the advantage here I will be upset.
Other Thoughts

UGA probably feels like they beat themselves. They cost themselves a combined 7 points off stupid plays. They first gave CU a 1st & goal inside the 10 that would turn into a TD by running into the kicker and then fumbled randomly in field goal range with like 2 minutes to go. Nobody punched it out or anything. They missed at least 4 tackles on Hansen alone and really had to be kicking themselves leaving Boulder.

This game will likely be a dogfight unless RG3 is just money with his passes. They have a far better team than KU and I am more worried with this one than KSU right now. Hopefully we come out on top as any gambling defense can make for either a tough or easy game depending on how the gambles turn out. I do feel better about it after hanging 38 on a similar scheme with Tech.

Thanks for the post Sammy11 the point of contention I'd have is that I think our defense is better than you give them credit for, they were really hung out to dry against CAL&MU

I said they were solid. No disrespect there. Hartigan has come on as a pass rusher and you have the only pair of CBs we will see other than UT's that are at that nfl standard. Most good units have 3-4 great players and a lot of good ones. Seems to be the case with you guys. Where did you see me downgrade your D?

In relation to how bad how offense has been and compound with our atrocious (easily the worst in the big 12) special-teams, what the defense has done is nothing short of outstanding. Not saying at all that you slighted the Defense just that I think given what they've had to work against they have been better than solid.

Baylor sucks athletically and academically. Tell Ken Starr and Buddy Jones or whatever the hell his name is that he can suck Ralphie's @ss.
See you tomorrow.

We may be defining solid differently but whatever, its not a big deal. Net point I was making is you guys are good on that side of the ball but not world beaters. Your O and ST certainly make their job harder and that is a valid point to consider.

Our WR's are better than just McKnight, he went from being our only option to our 2nd or 3rd option. Clemons and Patterson can both really play.

However I think you overrated our Special Teams. "Special Teams- Their coverage units are awful." Awful doesn't even come close to describing our special teams, think 8 year old pop warner special teams, our special teams unit would back them up.

Sammy.... we have better academics than you... and Buddy Jones' evaluation of our programs comparative records ove the last 4 years was downright comical.... 15 wins versus 16 wins....

I'd say you have our TE group a bit overrated and our WR group underrated. Also, you overrated our special teams, we are worse than awful, we have a unit that regularly costs us games.

Amazing in that 80 Hawai'i play that the receiver is on the 23 yd line and Jimmy Smith isn't even in frame yet and he caught him.

McKnight set a record for you guys so I led off with him. The other guys are very athletic and will be very good with more reps.

I thought Sammy's take was a pretty fair one, I would add the LB's are a little better than he gives credit for, but overall a good summary.

After watchinga little bit of Baylor, I could see RG rolling out and causing some problems with the ability to hit the deep ball. The Flash Gordon guy is fast, he worries me.

Our offense is legit. Kendall Wright is also a game breaker and we've got good speed at WR and TE up and down the depth chart.

Defense is too conservative scheme wise for its own good but we have some good guys lining up with speed. Phil Taylor is a beast at nose tackle. We have a lot of DL injuries right now so we are really thin up front on d.

Nice post overall Sammy. Well thought out and an interesting take on a fan from another school. I agree with Absinthe about our D. While we have take a few injuries in the past couple of weeks, it has been outstanding this year. Based on where the O has put them at times, the D has exceeded what I thought they were capable of overall. The backers are better than average as well.

The dickwad below probably needs to learn some manners so don't pay too much attention to him.

No doubt. Smith & UT's Aaron Williams will be the top 2 guys we face this season at CB. However Pilares probably isn't THAT fast. Most of the Hawaii guys are 4.6 guys with the exception of Ryan Grice-Mullins recently. Still an outstanding play to run him down.

If this game is close late that DL line depth issue will kill you. That said if RG3 is on form I am not sure we can keep it close late so it might not matter.

Having lived in the islands ('07 UH season ticket holder) when Pilares was in HS, seen him live in HS and at UH. He IS that fast. Just sayin'

Fair enough. Just going off of comparisons to other UH guys like Bess, Hawthorne, Mock, Rivers, Chad Owens, Komine, and others.

You list a lot of players there I've seen live too (exceptions Owens, Mock, Komine) hard to compare when Kealoha came in after most of them (if not all.) Anyway, I understand your point and what you've seen. All I remember is that the kid burns and easily would've beat Bess, Rivers, and Grice-Mullins in a 40.

Bottom Line: I think you gave a fair and objective estimate (except for completely OVERRATING our special teams , we are awful) and this upcoming game is going to be tight.

It is tough to truely appreciate our D considering the position the offense and special teams put them in. In the Cal debacle, the first 17 points the D gave up required Cal to move the ball 57 yards. Thats right 2 TD's and 1 FG required a total of 57 yards of offense. They regularly start with their backs against the wall.

All you need to know about our special teams is coach was mentored by this guy:

I hope the buffs stomp a mudhole the size of Texas in the souls of the Baylor bears. Don't act like you are unaware what lying dishonest ass foolery your admin engaged in to try to persuade the p10 that aren't historically one of the very worst programs in major ball ever. You didn't belong in the b12 and you didn't belong in the p10. And the p10 laughed at your lies and Ken Starr tactics. You are a joke. Live with that. Now you get to spend whatever time the b12 has left on your knees pleasuring your longhorn masters.

As much as I hope for the total ass kicking of the bears that you so richly deserve, given the state of our team it probably won't happen. So instead I will take comfort in the fact that your program will spend it's last days as a major licking dog feces off the longhorns shoes. And when they leave you and the conference implodes you will wonder if all of your moral compromises were worth it.

Have a great day!

Good post Sammy, and fairly close on your analysis.

However, in light of your administration's efforts to undermine CU's legitimacy as a Pac team, you won't find a lot of love in Boulder. **** Baylor.

Just in case anyone thinks I have a ton of luv for the baptists, that is not really the case. Hate their Admin as much as anyone for the comments but Sammy seems ok and didn't we come out on top - we got out and they are stuck with the whorns. Seems to me that being a baptist didn't help out Star and his 12 apostles!

lol - guess i am a baptist for not being an asshole like some others!

I agree. Sammy seems cool.
