I know a lot of people are really into the idea of bringing Mac back, but I seriously think its time we move on from this. Its sad that we have to beg a 70 year old coach to come back and save the program.

EB is a great direction to go. The only concern is his ability to manage a game, and call plays. But he can get a good OC to call the plays, and learn management.

Thoughts?
 
I don't believe he's ready for all the concerns that you pointed out. He seems to be more of a OC candidate at this point in his career.
 
I have other reasons for not wanting EB back to go along with the not enough experience card.
 
I like EB better as a head coach than as an offensive coordinator. As an OC, you'd lose his fire on the sidelines and he also wouldn't be as effective as a recruiter. Those are his 2 greatest strengths.

If we're worried about game management and learning on the job, then hire someone onto the staff like DiNardo or Vanderlinden (ex-Head Coaches with CU ties who are still in their 50s). They can come in as an Assistant Head Coach and help EB navigate all those logistics. Or simply hire Bill McCartney for one of the Quality Control jobs on the coaching staff that we aren't using. This is not that big of a deal.
 
i dunno. i guess i could get behind eb as hc--- he's definitely a motivator and he knows how to recruit. and, he knows how to get the run game going.

but, the job is political too and he'd need to be pretty careful on the PR front because he is already starting with some baggage.

really, for him, i think it would be about the assistants. if you had 2 rock-solid coordinators and a good staff, he'd be positioned to succeed.

i like mcilwaine because he's a great recruiter, a proven coordinator, and he favors a conservative run-first offense. and he comes from the saban coaching tree so he should be able to build a good staff, too. but, i'd definitely not rule EB out --- maybe he's the hidden homerun we need. minnesota sure digs him (they gave him a huge raise to keep him from darting to usc to be their o-coordinator under kiffin).

That kind of goes with what I've been saying. He needs to become more of a rounded coach. I don't think it would effect his recruiting either. He's always been a natural with that. I doubt moving him to a booth would effect his recruiting.

I say that on recruiting because a coordinator doesn't have the time (look at Kiesau). A HC makes up for it by having the cache.
 
100% for it. Why would McElwain even take this job. We can't pay the amount he would get from any SEC school, we don't have the support of the administration, poor support from the donor base, etc. This is not the plum job we all wish it would be. We are going to have to take a coach from a lesser school looking to move up or someone with some baggage. At least with EB he brings a genuine passion for the school. He can recruit, he knows what he is getting into, etc. The head coach doesn't call plays. Build a good staff and he do great things. Why doesn't anyone mention that USC was so interested, and that the Vikings wanted to keep him bad enough to give him a raise and title?
 
Look at Bienemy back when he was with our staff. He got our players pumped and ready to play the game. If you have been to the game you have seen coach prince actually yell at players and be pumped during the game, unlike emotionless hawk.
He has had 8 years to go around, mature, and become a better coach.
Teams want him. There is a reason Lane wanted him at SC, and when he was at UCLA, texas tried to get him. These are big name programs.

EB will get the job done.

Lane wanted him to recruit. Nothing more. Don't believe for a second that Lane would've let EB actually call the plays. That's why EB stayed in Minnesota. At least imo.
 
So you dont want him to recruit? EB will go into LA and snag so many recruits from lane, rick, sark and chip.

Your acting like he has never coached before.... what about doing the whole mac is HC, then hand the reigns to EB?
 
Who, are you going to get, with BCS HC experience? Everyone is either an assistant or a HC at a non-bcs school.
 
I'll fully support whoever we hire. The euphoria of sh*t canning Hawkins will take some time to ease. I would support EB, as I think he's put together a pretty impressive resume over the last 10 years. We could do a lot worse. The question is can we do better? I don't know the answer to that question.
 
Name names. Someone who will galvanize the alumni, someone who can recruit, doesn't have any skeletons, comes from a BCS conference, has coordinator experience and we can actually get.
 
EB wil bring so much energy to the program. your only basis is you dont think he can play call and his baggage.
 
Not to mention at the georgia game, EB was so excited to be back. This is a young coach who can get people excited about our program again. kinda like what sark did up at udub
 
Whatever bad publicity we would get for EB's baggage would be covered up by the good publicity of us hiring a black coach. He was always great with recruiting and now he has the fact that he has coached AP under his belt, rb's would be on their knees trying to play for him. He has been around alot since he left CU and would definately be able to assemble a hell of a staff around him. I'm All for EB
 
Here's the thing: We want to avoid hiring another Hawkins, so that means no HC guys from mid major non BCS schools. We want a guy who can recruit, particularly on the west coast. We want a guy who won't have to learn on the job. That narrows the field to about a dozen candidates, none of which is a realistic hire at CU. None of the reported leaders for the job meet all of those qualifications. McElwain and EB aren't Head Coaches. McCartney hasn't recruited anybody for over 15 years. Calhoun reminds people more and more of Hawkins every day. We're going to have to settle for somebody who doesn't meet every last one of our criteria. And let's not forget that the last time we hired a sure-fire can't miss guy with everything we wanted, it was Chuck Fairbanks.
 
Not to mention, if you recruit a hell of a line, and some talented backs from LA, im pretty sure the play call is easy. RUN RUN RUN the ball up in this thin air!
