Big 12 Farewell Tour: Texas Tech

Not much of a history here between these programs. Texas Tech has a chance (with a win) to even up the all-time series 5-5. Looks like in 1962, the Red Raiders won one game - against Colorado. As everyone knows, Texas Tech represents the last time the Buffs have won a road game, in (ugh) 2007, while the 2006 game was the first win of the season for an 0-6 Buffs squad. I recall the 2003 game as one in which the Buffs let an early 14-0 lead get away.

I for one would like to close out this series with a win (and winning record) and send the Red Raiders back to the hell hole from which they live.

I remember the 2002 as the first CU game I took my boys to. Morning kickoff, and kind of cold. My mom volunteered to go sit with my wife with the boys in our seats while I got to sit with my dad in their season seats on the 20 (mine were in The Herd.)

Wife and mom only got to see until the 2nd quarter because 2-year old twins had different ideas. But they had fun touring the campus and we have great pictures of them playing football in their CU sweat suits on Franklin Field. I think that was the game Kingsbury was supposed to go for like 500 yds on us and we stopped them cold.

Obviously that game is a memory to me for other reasons - but on the bright side, it was the twins' first indoctrination to CU and they are bound and determined to become Buffs! better start saving some more $$$$

i remember the 2002 game and thinking Kingsbury had a very slow delivery and missing on a lot of deep balls. we score right before the half on a spectacular individual effort by Purify (I think). we were having play-clock issues and i remember thinking we were going to blow it...and then BP takes a short pass and makes 2-3 guys miss.

Re-post from the blog thread:

The CU/Tech game that sticks out best in my memory was long before the Big 12 was even a twinkle in Deloss Dodds' eye. It was 1980 or thereabouts. CU had a kid named Walter Stanley, who was a great player on a world class craptacular team. He tore TT a new one. Stanley had some issues while at CU, and I don't remember exactly what they were (I was 12 at the time), and I don't think he finished his career in Boulder. I think he stole something. In any event, he was awesome that day, and it was early in the season, so we all thought that Fairbanks (yes, Fairbanks) had finally turned it around. We were wrong, but Stanley was a heckuva player.

Turns out that game was in 1981.

The 2007 game to Lubbock was, hands down, my favorite B12 road destination for Game Day.

The SWA flight into Lubnut is quick and cheap. The airport is close to the campus. Traffic is no problem. I lucked out with perfect temperatures, blue skies, and no wind.

The TT campus is huge and the gameday tailgate festivities are vast. Lots of bands & tents. It's a good vibe. Jones Stadium is new, big, and comfortable. The visitor section is in the endzone, far from the tech fans. It was a party all game long.

The Buffs shut down Harrel to Crabtree with great corner coverage by T-Wheat. Witnessing CU's first ever victory in Lubbock was historic. It was fun to get caught up in the belief that Dan Hawkins was going to deliver the goods in 2007, with victories over CSU, OU and Nebraska, and a sweep of the uppity B12 south.

Tortilla Tech fans are so blind with rage towards Aggie and UT that they have nothing bad to say to Buffs fans. It's quite the opposite. Tech fans are quick to hand you a beer and tell you about how wonderful their last Colorado vacation turned out. I don't care what the UT or Aggie or other B12 fans say, this is a very friendly bunch.

At half time, the Alumni pavillion was the place to be, with even more beers being offered and lots of big TV's to catch up on games going on around the nation.

With practically no Buff fans willing to journey to the Texas high plains, access to the CU team and family members is second to none. It was fun joining a bunch of boosters and family members at the steakhouse. I got to meet Charles Johnson and Mark Johnson from the KOA broadcast team, Patrick Ridgell and Tom Hensler from the press, the parents of Tyler Polumbus, Terrance Wheatly, and Hugh Charles. Since Hugh and T-Wheat had a huge game, they were pumped. Misti Hawkins was having fun in the bleachers. Dave Plati, Brian Cabral, Coach Hawk and the players took their time to outside the stadium before getting on to the bus, giving those fans who were there plenty of opportunity to get caught up in the celebration. It was the ultimate destination to feel like an insider.

Lubbock was fun Sat night, too. We found good food and good times all night long. I haven't been back since. But if CU ever schedules a return trip to Lubbock, I'll be there.

When you see any Tech Fans in Boulder, give them lots of beer and a big hello.

Whats up with that second to last picture? It looks like Kansas fans are watching in Folsom.

A bunch of folks in blue, protesting Coach Hawkins before he even got here. Visionaries, every last one of them.

The only story I have is the trip to Lubbock I never took. When I was a Freshman in 76 some buddies and I bought our tix and were ready to make Lubbock our first road trip. As soon as my Dad caught wind, he vetoed the idea in a big way. As I recall, he said in no uncertain terms, I had no business going on a road trip, I needed to concentrate on my studies :)lol:). What could I do, he was paying the bills. I did not make the trip and actually the Buffs lost something like 27 - 10, but did go on to win the Big 8 and lose to Ohio State in the Orange Bowl.

The 1999 game was a bittersweet one for me. I was there and had to watch one of my best friends just absolutely kill us. He had like 232 yards rushing and he was a true freshman. We had fun after the game though lol, what I remember at least. One thing that sticks out, cause he told me 500 times lol, was how he couldnt believe how fast Ben Kelly was.

2003 was the first CU game I saw in person, even though it was a road game. Tough loss but I never thought that gold helmets could look so awesome. Let's end this series with a win.

This move to the PAC 10 is ill-conceived. The money will not be what was estimated and I'll bet it will be on par, at best, with B12 money when it all shakes out. The PAC 10 does not even want CU and Utah. Most in pac10 feel it's dilutive to the conf. CU is throwing away traditions and now has major logistical issues with travel in all sports. B12 was the right place for CU. Changing conf will not solve your problems.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I know you really are searching for the sarcasm font. We don't have one. It's clearly needed here.

You should take the Buff off your handle. Nevermind, I should have read all of the posts my bad.

False, we will be making more than the 7 million a year or whatever we get now.

The PAC 10 does not even want CU and Utah.
False. The Pac 10 and CU have been trying to join forces for over 15 years

Most in pac10 feel it's dilutive to the conf.
With the current state of our programs, can't argue with you on this one.

CU is throwing away traditions
We wouldn't be playing Nebraska anymore regardless as they left for the Big 10. And i think everyone is happy to throw away the tradition of driving across the plains for away games and being Texas's bitch for the past 15 years.

and now has major logistical issues with travel in all sports.
Colorado has a shorter travel time to other schools in the Pac 12 south division than many schools in the Big 12. Also, every school in our PAC division has an airport nearby so there will no longer be the need of a plane ride plus long bus trip. Travel will probably be even cheaper now, as we have not ever been within reasonable driving distance of any other Big 12 confernce schools, and flying west is cheaper than flying to the center of the country.

B12 was the right place for CU.
There are approximately 47 people in the world that share your opinion on this.

Changing conf will not solve your problems.
True, however most of our current problems have nothing to do with what conference we are in. They have to do with funding and leadership. The PAC 12 will help us out in both regards and will be excellent for the university from here on out.

You are working off of estimates Nothing is final on the money. b12 is working on a new deal too. If you compare apples to apples, with new deals for both conferences, I'll bet CU will be on par with what they would make in new b12 deal. Time will tell. I'll bet Okie St. pulls in same money from B12 as CU from P10.

The PAC 10 does not even want CU and Utah.
False. The Pac 10 and CU have been trying to join forces for over 15 years. Interest 15 years ago is not the same as "trying to join forces for over 15 years".
The whole world knows p10 rolled the dice and jumped on CU to avoid getting Baylor jammed into the larger deal by TX legislature. It was the larger deal that p10 wanted. P10 certainly preferred CU over Baylor and probably over others in the deal, but had P10 known it was just going to be CU and Utah only, no way they do that deal again. That is 100% lock down reality. You are kidding yourself if you believe otherwise.

Well this is the whole crux of your opinion - you shouldn't have opined if you're not absolutely positive that CU's would-be share in the Big 12's new deal trumps CU's will-be share in the Pac 12.

Besides, you are aware that the Big 12 is going to disintegrate within 3-5 years, right? Grab a parachute.

Was Horn serious? I thought he was joking around. Honestly, nobody in his/her right mind actually believes this is a bad move for CU. I couldn't care less what anybody else thinks. This is a fantastic move.

I'm not stating numbers as a fact. Other poster stated that CU will make 7 million more as if it were certain. I'm saying that I believe the money figures that were being thrown around as reasons for leaving B12 will not, be any better than what new b12 deal will be. I also said time will tell.

. It's called "group think". Happens all the time.

Having received the unsolicited opinion from HornBuff, I think it is clear we made the wrong move. ****, we seem to **** up a lot.

If you truly believe what you're saying here, you're nuts. Full on bat sh*t crazy. More money, better access to recruits, better TV deals, avoiding the stank of UT, better roadies, more exposure, a far and away better commissioner and conference office in general, the list goes on and on and on. Staying in the B12, especially given the opportunity to leave, would have been disastrous.

Oh, and did I mention that CU can now go to the Rose Bowl? Yeah, I can see why you would think the Big 12 would be soooooo much better. Insanity. Pure insanity.

Yes, should not have fired GB, should not have hired Hawk (hindsight is 20/20), should not have extended Hawk (unthinkable), should have let him go end of last year, should have stayed home in the B12 where CU belongs.

Actually, the right spot for CU is the MWC, if the MWC were any good. I prefer regional affiliations. IF the MWC schools were stronger (most importantly, financially stronger) that would be a cool set up. Four schools on the front range plus two in Utah.

That's my point. You think that the money and tv will be a lot better. I don't think that is true. You won't know until it all shakes out. We will see. P10 does not have big time support. The attendance and TV viewership is not that great. Do you think you are moving to the SEC? Why do you think p10 wanted to expand in the first place? Because they were doing so well?

Texas has played in the Rose twice in the past few years from the b12.

Methinks the Horn doth protest too much.

You still haven't addressed the biggest problem with the Big 12 (and why it's insane to stay in it) - it's rapid and inevitable demise. Ask K-State how awesome the MWC is in about 5 years.
