I’d first like to say thanks for letting me join this website. I have been a long time reader of many of you, first time poster. I’m 30 years old and have been a season ticket holder for three years. My father has been a season ticket holder since 1976 and I have not missed one home game since September of 1988. I was in Michigan in 1994 and have been to CU games in Wisconsin, Washington, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas A&M, Texas (twice), Kansas State (twice), Nebraska (twice), as well as the Cotton Bowl ’96 and Fiesta Bowl ’01. I consider myself to be CU through and through.
My question:
If Bohn leaves and goes to KU, can the University bring Mac in as AD/Head Coach on a year-to-year contract? McCartney is not going anywhere so you don’t need to lock him in. Give him the title of AD and let Berry/Plati act the role with the occasional lunch-in Mac would attend as AD. McCartney would not require a bunch of money. This should free up resources in order to offer two good assistant coaches multi-year contracts worth taking ($). Meaning we can get a really good OC and DC. Which should breed a hotspot for good QB, TE, WR, RB, LB, OL, DL coaches that want to move up to OC’s and DC’s. I think donors would love to see Mac back and would gladly open their pocket books. I believe that if Coach Mac could not turn it around in 5 years he would leave on his own because he respects the program and University.
If the Chancellors and the University are going to make a valiant effort to again compete in athletics, no matter who they bring in to replace Hawkins, I would also like to see season ticket donation requirements doubled. I want to compete with the best the same as everyone else, but along with that means paying more money. Are you willing to pay $80.00/Texas, $85.00/Okie State, $76/OSU with an even higher donation for a winning program? Many programs also seat 30,000+ more people than Folsom on a regular basis. I guess it could be called the cost of winning. It is definitely a cost I am willing to pay.

First off: Welcome.

Secondly: Bohn isn't going anywhere. The talk about KU is absurd.

Third: The first thing they have to do is get the stadium sold out on a regular basis and develop a waiting list for season tickets. Next, they need to increase the size of te stadium. Once they're regularly selling out a 65K+ stadium, they can talk seriously about substantially increasing the ticket prices/donation requirements.

Bohn's aging mother lives in Boulder. She's doing well but he's not about to leave family to go to KU.

Weird how fast things change. KU athletics looked on the rise. Now the AD has a big scandal, big buy out for Mangino, a crappy $8MM buyout for Gill, stuck in the big Tex conference and possibly left out of the BCS if the conference implodes. Why would Bohn want to leave our small mess at CU for a bigger mess at KU? He ain't going there.

I don't think people really understand just what is involved in the day to day activities of being the athletic director of a major university.

Frankly, Bill McCartney isn't qualified to be an athletic director.

First, max4buffs, welcome. Second, treat DBT with the utmost respect.

I think being an AD/HC would be akin to an NFL guy being GM/HC. It'd be impossible. I'm not so sure Mac would be a great choice for AD anyway. He'd be pretty opinionated and would step on a lot of toes, don't you think?

:iagree:

First off welcome Max.

Second you do bring up a good point. If Mac is brought in as HC that could definitely save us a multi-year contract to be freed up for the OC and DC, as I would not be surprised in the least with him putting his staff's stability first until the administration can sack up and overturn that stupid ass law or get the AD out from under it's reach.

Welcome Max. You bring fantastic credentials as a Buff fan!

A couple of points:

--AD is a full time job, and requires unity of command and a single-point of vision and leadership. The responsibilities are enormous, the job busy, and it shouldn't be dismissed as something a couple of senior folks in the department can do. Similarly, Sports Information Director is a full-time job that demands many, many hours each week.

--You definitely don't want to mix the Football HC job with the AD job. Not only is there some conflict of interest (imagine how the Women's basketball coach would feel about the allocation of resources, or who would fire Mac if his return was less than triumphant?), but there is little to no overlap of duties/responsibilities.

--Recruits feel good about job stability in their coaching staff. A year-to-year contract would hinder recruiting.

Welcome again.

Welcome! Now fu@k off :)

Don't let our constant mocking of anything you post deter you from posting.

It is not unprecedented though. John Mackovic was both HC and AD at Illinois in the late 80s / early 90s, a period in which the school was supremely successful in basketball, football and most other sports. He oversaw a Final Four in hoops, a national title in gymnastics, and a #1 overall NFL pick in Jeff George. This was during the time that Illinois gave CU its only loss in '90. Mac soon bolted for Texas.

Welcome! I don't post often, but I keep up with all the chatter.

I've thought he would be perfect if/when Bohn moved on, but I'm not in favor of it anymore. When is the last time we really commended an AD for doing a good job? Personally, I couldn't wait for Tharp to go. Mac has a greater chance of success if he is just our HC. Ceal Berry is more qualified at this point, although I don't want her either.

Heard a little birdie say that Mac is already slated to be the replacement after season's end and that he is insistent on having Barnett be his OC. Thoughts?

Barnett is a heck of a coach, I'd be fine with that. However, I see no way the University will let him come back to coach. Just too much baggage.

Mac I can see, GB? I really doubt it. MB burned that bridge and I really am skeptical that he would have GB back.

There's a lot of little birdies out there, and they say a bunch of different ****.

Your thread title pisses me off. When we know this to be true, then put a thread title up like this.
