why wait

Ringo has a fair article today (altho he is hung up on the backturning thing) about the timing of the firing.

At this point, everyone knows that dh is history. I don't see that waiting until the season is over to make an announcement, helps the team at all. What, they don't get what's happening? They are going to feel or play better, because the announcemnt is delayed? Part of hawk's mantra is dealing with reality, sucking it up. Why not here and now?

Make the announcement now and let people starting planning and recruiting.

What is the advantage to waiting?

We all knew he was so fired last year too. How'd that one pan out? We are still sure that much is for sure.

Probably no advantage to waiting other than they still, theoretically, have a shot at a bowl game. But even though the fans want a change, he still has a connection with the players. I believe that Bohn believes that the classy thing to do is let him finish out the season with his players and, especially, Cody. Now I know that doesn't make fans happy, but Bohn, I think, tries to do things the right way in his mind.

Plus, you have to be certain that, in the mean time, Bohn is beginning his search. He's putting feelers out. He's talking to people behind the scenes. So, I'm sure, he isn't just wasting time. Even if he fired Hawkins today, he would not have the new coach in place to recruit, most likely. And, frankly, Hawkins is paid through the end of his contract.

Well, I can see the angle that CU cannot get the reputation of a school that pulls the trigger too soon. It is hard enough to get a quality coach here. Letting the seniors ride the ship down with their captain? That is a littel harder to sell but it is a valid point.

OTOH, D II is a toxic and corrosive influence. Fans, alums, media, everybody is losing interest because CU is a disaster when it takes the field. A change would breathe some life into the program D II's incompetence and arrogance is killing.

The only real concrete time based factor is when the new guy gets named. Nobody, and I mean nobody is recruiting based on D II still being here. If he is, you might as well turn out the lights, CU FB will be completely Fairbanked at that point.

I think as long as we are still fighting for a bowl, keep the continuity in tact. The planning has already begun, regardless of when he gets let go. And recruiting, we can't start recruiting until we get a new coach and we can't really get a new coach (unless it's McCartney) until the season is just about over. There really is no sense in canning him for another couple weeks until he loses one of the next three games. If he loses to KU, he should get dumped on his *****can.

Another thing to consider is, as dumb as it might sound, we need to keep the CU buzz going. We can our coach now, we make headlines in the beginning of November which will die down over the next two weeks. Not too much chatter about Minnesota anymore after they let Brewster go. We need the chatter to continue until the end, so CU stays in the pseudo-headlines for better or for worse. Keep the speculation going, keep people talking and then after we beat the PISS out of the fuskers, we ditch the Talkins.

I think the potential to save the season keeps some motivation of Hawkins and the other coach's heads. I wouldn't make an announcement until there is for sure no way that they are going to a bowl game.

The way it stands right now, they win the next three (3) games and they are still practicing (and playing) in December. Keep the carrot out there for Hawkins and the team for as long as you can.

I think they're clinging to some desperate hope that Hawk can beat Kansas and ISU and get the ball rolling towards a possible bowl game. We all know it won't happen, but Bohn just feels that it's our best chance to do so.

We're all pretty down on the team right now, but Bohn probably thinks it's not that far fetched that they could beat KU and ISU and then hope they can get a win against KSU or Nebraska. That really would be the ideal scenario. Hawk would still get fired, maybe we beat Nebraska, new coach has some bowl practices with the players as well as a start up game. Win win. That said, I doubt we beat KU or ISU, let alone both of them.

So lets make a giant leap here and say that they win 3 out of the next 4 games and go bowling. I don't think that's enough to keep Hawkins here. Do you let him coach the bowl game or do you let the assistants coach the bowl game and get the new coach out on the recruiting trail?

Yes, that is best case scenario. Let Cabral show his stuff for a bowl game so he has best chance to stay on with next staff or let him showcase skills for another job. This is all pretty far fetched though. It all starts and ends with KU.

He's gone regardless. I'm not sure about the bowl game. Isn't it customary to give him the choice?

I think he gets fired the day after Nebraska, regardless of what happens to close out the season.

Would you really want a fired D II Danny behind the mike at the bowl game pressers and at the public functions? We'd be better off not going....

So even if we make a bowl he's still gone right after the Nebraska game, is that most here are thinking? Because it certainly wouldn't make any sense to let him stick around for another 4-5 weeks to coach the bowl game since that just further hinders recruiting and hiring a new coach. Of course the timeline for getting the new coach in here depends on if we hire someone who is currently on the staff of another team.

The only possibility of making a bowl game with d2 danny on the sidelines is the mathematical one. The handicap of that outcome shouldn't surprise anyone.

So, if cu wins the next 3 and gets blown out at nebraska, they sit at 6-6. Is Bohn going to fire hawk after the nebraska game or will he let dan coach the bowl game? If so, maybe ol danny boy won't get fired like so many claim bohn will do...

If CU gets to 6-6 Hawk should be fired after Nebraska, let someone on the staff coach the team during the bowl, and you name the new HC ASAP after the firing and let him start recruiting, familiarizing himself with the program and the assistants that are already here (to see if he might want to keep a few on) and allow him to start building his staff. That way you can start spring ball and hit the ground running.

Bowl game or no bowl game, the absolute last day Dan Hawkins should be head coach at CU is November 26th.

It's not so much when DH is fired. It's when the new guy can start recruiting and making his mark on CU. Not sure how a temporary coach would help CU unless he was "the guy".
