Coup de'etat

I am secretly hoping that Mike Bohn's head is on the block too. His inaction may be a result of a Chancellor / President decision to ham-string him because he is going to be replaced along with Hawk. Enter Mac as AD and head of coaching search...

Someone please explain the Bill McCartney to athletic director love affair for me. Please?

I can certainly understand the people who don't want him to be CU's head football coach. He's old. He's been out of the game for a long time. I get that.

But being old and being out of college sports for 16 years, while that disqualifies him from being a head football coach, it makes him the best candidate to be CU's athletic director?

Explain how that makes ANY sense, please.

It doesn't make any sense. Mac has only come out and said he wants to coach. MB is our AD and will be for some time.

Nostalgia?

I think his leadership skills are a good fit for an AD, not to mention he would be able to fund-raise as good if not better than MB...JMHO

How are his legal skills? How are his negotiation skills? How are his personnel management skills? Is he going to be able to attend the girl's volleyball games with the same passion that he attends football games? Will he be able to hire a new soccer coach, if an opening should occur? Would he know when / if to pull the trigger on firing the tennis team coach?

He is a coach. Period. Plain and simple. When I think about the possibility of CU hiring Bill McCartney as athletic director, I am reminded of Anton Chigurh's line from No Country for Old Men, "That's foolish. You pick the one right tool." Bill McCartney is not the right tool.

Not to mention -- there is apparently a lot of resistance to the idea of bringing McCartney in as head coach (even though it appears he has the most backing of the major boosters, and even a couple Regents) because the minute he is hired, he is the most powerful person in the athletic department. While I do not think he is remotely qualified to be an athletic director, I think if there is concern over the power he would wield as the football coach, that concern is greatly magnified if he is the athletic director.

His years as a leader of his own organization that he built from the ground up and grew to millions is not a good resume?

Unfortunately no. Like being the coach of the football team, that organization is something that he is very passionate about. Can he be equally passionate about soccer? Tennis? Volleyball? I believe the skills needed to be a very good AD are different than those needed to be a good HC. I'm not saying he couldn't or wouldn't do a good job just that I don't understand why people are pushing for it.

Some people maybe mistaking McCartney as the ying to Dr. Tom's yang.

Who gives a **** about tennis (do we even have a team anymore?) and volleyball? The most important thing this AD should be concerned with is getting the football program straightened out.

LOL. While I think you are joking, I am sure the 8 student athletes playing tennis (some? on scholarship) and the 18 girls playing volleyball want an Athletic Director who supports them, just as much as he (or she) supports the football and basketball teams. Not to mention all of CU's club sports and cheerleaders / spirit squads, who also fall under the supervision of the athletic department.

I don't get the anti-MAC as head coach crowd. He is old GIVEN. He's recruiting kids who do not know who he is or what he did - Did anyone know who he was when he recruited the first time in 86, 87 88. He knows that you have to give the kids a strong family away from home and something every great coach can do is talk religion with the familys. THAT IS HUGE. He can motivate. That is something that will never change. He could turn a 50 year old nun into a late night pole dancer.

People just want to throw ideas and names out there, and most people couldn't name more than 2 or 3 actual Athletic Directors, as opposed to former football coaches....

You don't have to convince me, I'd take McCartney back right now.

All you have to do is look at what KSU is doing with Snyder (who is older than McCartney, btw) to see that the age isn't really that much of a factor.

to play devil's advocate, Snyder was only out of the game for what 4 years? 16 is much longer.

I hear ya -- that's why I only said AGE shouldn't be that much of a factor.

To me, the fact that McCartney has been out of coaching for 16 years is the biggest concern.

Completely agree but I would love to see him involved in sort of fashion. While the 16 years out is a concern, his ability to communicate and motivate are not. He can still sell his vision and lead.

Well, Dr. Scum @ nub is the AD. He hasn't done too bad of a job there.

Title IX might have something to say about it as well.

I thought this thread was about overthrowing the junta.

**** you.

He also has an abundance of cash, rabid fans that would buy tickets to a knitting contest if he asked and great facilities. Nothing even close to the challenges in Boulder.

Osborne also has a PhD in Educational Psychology (tough for the eggheads in the faculty to rip him when he's got the same educational credentials they do) and served three (3) terms in the United States House of Representatives.
