Does McCartney hurt our coaching search??

With Mac now openly campaigning for the job, and Bohn admitting that he is a legitimate candidate - does that hurt CU's ability to perform a real national coaching search??

If you're a top coordinator somewhere, and Mac is hovering around the CU program and being talked up by every radio station and now even ESPN, are you more skeptical that you've got a real chance to land the job if approached?

I worry the constant chatter about Mac coming back is going to make some people shy away from taking a serious look at this job. Beyond that, does a candidate want to take a job where the iconic former coach is always hanging around the AD?

Thoughts?

No. Anyone interested is going to ask for an interview. Anyone that shies away because of competition is not qualified in my book.

True, but if you're a guy like Malzahn and are likely to have a few options, do you focus on those if you feel you have a more legit chance at the job? Maybe not, just seems were pretty focused on Mac and I wonder if that has any negative impact.

In concept I think it could. However, most of what we are hearing seems to be that we are looking at a lot of different options. I think once a candidate calls Bohn and finds out the situation is open, they would feel more comfortable about presenting their strategy.

Plus, if you are a Malzahn-type wouldn't you want to interview as many places as possible to know what is best for you?

Basically I am not sure Bohn is as focused on Mac as many of the fans may be.

he isn't....
and coachs have big egos so if a coach wants to become CU's HC he will not be swayed by Mac.

It could definitely affect negotiations if people think Mac will sign for a lot less. They'd have to really want to be a BCS HC, so that may rule out any who currently are.

Honestly if there is any truth to the rumor that Newton is about to be suspended I think the news that Malzahn was not on CU's radar is because anyone associated with the Auburn program is about to become radioactive.

I think it hurts the program if not the coaching search. Bohn is now in a position where he will be second guessed if he picks anyone except Mac. A portion of the fan base will not forgive him if Mac isn't the coach and probably won't accept the new coaching staff. That's not a good starting point, IMHO.

I hope it would not impact the search. As others have said, candidates should be self-confident and not shy away from competition and I would think any coach that's interested in the CU job will be interested regardless of Mac's interest.

I am fully confident that whomever is picked to be the next head coach of this great team will be fully supported by a Great Fan Base.

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

i think it has no impact other than causing a candidate to say "hey, they must be really desperate. i am so ****ing awesome at what i do that i am sure they will hire me ahead of a guy that has been out of football for 16 years."

i am presuming that the idea of Mac's return will not be viewed as a cure-all by outsiders. i think many outsiders will think it is odd. ... not that i care what they think if we win.

I don't think it hurts Bohn's position at all. Gives him the luxury of already having a bird in hand. It would be a big red flag to prospective candidates if Mac wanted a job somewhere besides here.

Would Mac fire up the fan base more than any of the other candidates? Probably. There's a big part of the CU football fanbase that wouldn't exist if it weren't for him. A good chunk of them have drifted away over the years. Mac will have an easier time getting those people fired-up about CU football again. Can't blame the guy for being awesome. None of the people I talk with about CU football are threatening to take their marbles and go home if he doesn't get the gig.

I could see a problem if he gets passed over for someone who ends up flopping anywhere near as badly as Hawk. Bohn will get fired, and CU will permanently lose some core fans. But all that will happen anyway if the next coach sucks.

I agree with you. Bohn needs to be VERY careful how he conducts this search. If he does not go with Mac and/or EB, then he better be very open about the search process and make everyone understand that he seriously considered both as candidates.

So, in that regard I think it has an impact on acceptance and I also think it could have an impact on Bohn's decision making. Mac and/or EB are the safe picks for Bohn and the Admin politically. If it doesn't work out, no one will blame them.
