BOULDER – Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano has an idea of the kind of coach he’d like the university to hire next, but will step aside and leave the details of conducting a search to athletic director Mike Bohn.

It doesn’t mean DiStefano won’t be one of a few CU officials Bohn needs to sign off on the new coach, just that he’ll be as little a part of the process as possible. DiStefano, however, did say he’d like to see a coach with big school experience. Dan Hawkins, who was fired on Tuesday, came from Boise State, which plays its games in the Western Athletic Conference.

Speaking on a teleconference with local media, DiStefano said he’d like to see “a coach who is either successful now as a head coach or has recent coaching experience either with someone from the Pac 12 or the Big 12. Somebody in a conference similar to, if not equal to, the conference that we’re joining.”

Colorado drew some criticism with the way it conducted its last coach search, which featured the use of consultant Chuck Neinas. DiStefano said he wasn’t sure if the Buffs athletic department would go that route again, and would let Bohn make that decision.

“I’m going to leave that up to Mike,” DiStefano said. “We’ve had a brief conversation. The difference between this time around with Dan Hawkins and prior with Gary Barnett is that we started very late in the season looking for a coach. We now have a bit more time on our hands to do a better job of due diligence.”

Meanwhile, Bohn said he’s already gotten some interest in the position from outside of the CU family. Still, former CU coach Bill McCartney and current interim coach Brian Cabral have both also thrown their hats into the ring.

“We’ve had a lot of interest already and a lot of intrigue,” Bohn said. “But right now we’re focused on doing everything we can to ensure that we have all of our issues resolved with coach Hawkins first.”

Bohn said there is no timetable for having a new coach in place.

The move to the Pac 12 should work in Colorado’s favor because facilities and salaries are similar to what CU has, DiStefano said.

“I think going to the Pac 12 is actually going to help us,” DiStefano said. “The limited financial resources we have, we’re more similar to the teams in the Pac 12 than in the Big 12. I think we’ll fare well in the Pac 12, but we’ll probably have to look at some upgrades in facilities. And I don’t know what those are and I’ll certainly leave those up to Mike to work with, but I think that will be a priority for a new coach coming in.”

He's finally starting to come around. Having to compete with Stanford and Cal on the athletic field will help us! If they can be successful there is really no more excuse. You know he doesn't want to be laughed at by these guys.

Hope this isn't another smokescreen by DeStiff. And I don't see what difference it would make regardless of what D-1 conference the new coach comes from. Oh, and on upgrades, why would DeStiff say he doesn't know what the upgrades should be, and that would be up to the new coach? DeStiff is a Meth-head

Well at least he is somewhat acknowledging that we need them. I'm just trying to stay positive at this point. We have seen some good developments regarding the program since June other than the on field performance.

He is saying that they want BCS coaching experience...meaning they have hired Dave Logan! :wow:

Also think his comments are to let folks know that Mac would not be his choice. Currently on the job at a BCS or on a staff like the conf we are joining

you apparently do not know that Cal has a "special admissions" clause in every FR class. even Rick N. was complaining about it a year ago. guys he couldn't recruit to UCLA because they couldn't get in..... Cal may be a great school, but they honey in a lot of non-admits for sports.

I'd be willing to bet he knows what upgrades Bohn and the AD are looking at, but he isn't going to comment on them because that's Bohn's area. Just a guess.

"It's entirely Mike's decision" (but Mike knows if must be a B12 or 12Pac coach who meets my long list of criteria before I sign off on his choice.)

"I haven't thought much about it (because Mike is going to take the fall if he screws it up).

This is true. Cal has started letting players in that wouldn't be there during the 90's and early 00's under Holmoe.

i also think from my experience on campus (which is considerable) Phil DiStefano is actually a pretty decent administrator. he's not an all-purpose scapegoat for Dan Hawkins on-field failures. I think and from what I hear from higher up colleagues Phil is a pretty competent guy esp. compared to some of the Hoffmans and Albinos of the world.

we all wanted Hawk gone last year. Sure. that aside. I think Phil is good for CU. as much or more than Bohn, he was part of the get into the Pac move on CU's part.

Benson was not well liked by faculty as prez, so to me....jury is out. he's been a creature of the oil/energy business for decades so whether he sees CU as a means to an end or a means remains to be seen imo. he's not "an academic" or was ever popular with "academics" so i laugh sometimes when some AB posters associate him with the evil anti-football liberal intelligentsia....which doesn't exist.

ya, i heard benson was not liked by faculty as well. when i was in school a few of the professors told me they really didn't want benson to be president. he's not an academic guy, he's not an athletic guy, why the hell was he chosen as president? who wanted him?
