Per Bohn on the radio. How awesome is that? Now we can lock up both coordinators!! Add that to the fact that we are significantly increasing our assitant coach salary pool, and you can welcome CU football back into the realm of quasi respectability.

now they have to make the right hire..

It is great news, and yet the subsequent news about Kiesau just makes it odd. Gonna make it a little awkward for the next coach.

Extend Collins!

FIRE BOHN! ....his job is much more than hiring or firing a coach. You Bohn haters out there need to see that.

It's a great start, but an even better one would be Bohn saying he is so dedicated to winning that he forgoes his multi year deal for a year to year deal to give to athletics

the kiesau thing isn't a big deal. they didn't say he for sure would be on the staff. he's under contract. that is all this is about. the new hc will make his own decisions about the coordinators. unless the contract specifically said that kiesau is the oc, then he can be asked to take a positions coach job or even an administrative job or they can just pay him out or they can negotiate a settlement with him.

no big deal at all.

the 3 contracts are a big deal. lock up a couple of coordinators, increase the salary pool, have a plan to upgrade facilities, increase academic and institutional support... it is starting to come together again. this p12 thing is really, really good for us because i think the suits believe they are more fairly competing against "peer" institutions as opposed to low academic football factories. while i don't think that is a universally true condemnation of the b12, i do think in this case the better perception of the p12 that the suits have will really help us.

they are going to do what they can to set the table. now we just need a hc who knows how to recruit and coach.

GO BUFFS!

Best news since yesterday! We can now offer security past the HC. This will open some doors that have others have been reluctent to step thru in the past. Sounds like we are making progress with the Admin in placing some priorities where they need to be.

It sounds like the higher ups are reaching a couple of conclusions: a commitment to football is important to a universities prestige, and a financial commitment is necesary to make that happen. Good for Bohn.

That's great news! How did that come about, anyway? I was under the impression that the limitations on long-term deals was a state, not a institutional, deal?

Either way, it's great news.

It's a state deal and CSU has to deal with those limitations as well.

That's what I thought. I was under the impression it would take a statewide vote or something silly like that to change. I'm glad we have 3 long-term deals to give out, but I would like to see the Board of Regents push to remove that restriction altogether, if possible, because it hamstrings the University academically as well as athletically.

Each University has 6(maybe more but it's not very many) long term contracts they can award if I understand correctly. It's a matter of priorities who they award those contracts to. President, AD, Coaches, Professors, .... The number is state mandated and would require a amendment to the state constitution to change or increase the number available.
So it appears that CU is willing to give another one of its limited long term contracts to the football program. This means someone else doesn't get one. That means a fundamental shift in their priorities in favor of football.

Oh, okay, that what my original thought was. So it's more of a case of the Admin/Regents giving football more of a boost. That is good, but it's a ridiculous notion that the schools in CO have to deal with this bull****.

Per Plati-

The state actually is where the limit comes from. Last I knew, we're allowed six contracts--the University--not athletics, and the university selects who can receive them. Most have gone to coaches or AD's. Same applies at CSU, I believe. Any changes definitely would have to start on the state level.

So in all actuality if the University wanted to they could put all six towards Athletics, specifically the football team.

So who had to give up their long term contract to free it up for football...Lappe? Benson? Probably not Boyle. I'm thinking the contracts were previously allocated to Benson, Bohn, Hawkins, Kiesau, Boyle, and Lappe - which of these isn't on a contract?

Professors do not fall under that rule, it is only for Administrative personnel at each campus of a university.I am fairly certain that Benson does not count towards CU-Boulder's long-term contract limits as he is the President of the entire university, not just the Boulder campus. DiStefano, however, does NOT have a long-term deal.

The most recent count I can find had:
  1. Dan Hawkins 2008-12 $850,000+/yr
  2. Tad Boyle 2010-15 $590,000/yr
  3. Mike Bohn 2007-12 $300,000/yr
  4. Linda Lappe 2010-15 $286,000/yr
  5. Eric Kiesau 2009-11 $214,000/yr
  6. Liz Kritza 2009-2014 $142,200/yr
Saying that three of these contracts will now be used on football doesn't necessarily imply that a new HC and 2 assistants (the coordinators) will get long-term deals.

First off, Hawkins still has a long-term contract despite his termination. How that factors into the 6 spots is crucial.

It could be that Bohn will forego his long-term deal so that a new HC gets one, thus making it 3 for football because Hawk is eating one up until 2012. Unless we pay off Hawk in a lump-sum does it still count for the State mandate?

Kiesau's contract is not specific; to him being the OC. When given the extension Bohn said:

"it doesn`t guarantee that he will be the offensive coordinator. It doesn`t do anything except allow us to show a commitment to somebody we have a lot of confidence in and believe is a key part of us making progress".

I bet Mac emphasized that point in his 50 page presentation on things to change to make the football team better.

what would it take to get that limitation removed and how likely is it to happen?

It would need to get passed through the State House and Senate and signed by Hickenlooper. Not very likely to happen with the current economic state that the State is in.

Keisau seems prettyr sure he'll be here and said why not? Why Not? I'm sorry but keisau hasn't impressed much.

Our offense has been horrific. I haven't seen anything particularly innovative out of Kiesau and our play calling is generally very predictable. I sure hope our administrators aren't telling prospective candidates that Kiesau must stay.

The contracts are another piece of good news. Now make the right hire.

somebody was just telling me most assistant coaches in the SEC and ACC are only on 1 year contracts. Usually there are only 3 coaches per staff that get long term deals. Could be a great move!
