CU: No tuition or state funding will go to Hawkins' buyout

I apologize if this has I already been discussed somehwere (I imagine it has), but I've missed much more than I've been able to keep up with on this board over the past few days. I also did a search by thread title and it didn't show up.

So why didn't the university just say this last year?

University leaders and students mostly shrugged off any concerns that the school will be criticized for the $2 million contract buyout amid budget cuts. The money will not come from CU's general fund, but rather revenue generated by the athletic department.
"It's not tuition paying for it, and it's not state funding," said CU President Bruce Benson.
Furthermore, according to one senator it wouldn't matter much if at all anyway:
State Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, said criticism of wasteful spending on CU's behalf is illogical because athletic departments generate their own money. He doesn't suspect the Legislature will hold the buyout against CU come budget-setting season.
"If Hawkins needed to go, they shouldn't hang onto him for fear of critics who will say that it cost money," Mitchell said.

You know what's funny about that? That information isn't readily available on the major Denver news agencies websites. (Minus the denverchannel.com). You either have to dig for it or it isn't there at all. Maybe I wasn't using the right search term but I tried "Hawkins" and "Hawkins Buyout".

Really goes to show you the kind of perception the media wants you to have on this topic.

One of the "Editorial Letters" on the Denver post proves my point:

"In any other public agency, the TV stations would be all over this as a waste of taxpayer money and looking for a rope. Based on Hawkins’ dismal performance, he owes the taxpayers of Colorado $1.8 million. Maybe he should donate it for unemployment benefits."

It is simple, the vast majority of voting mouthbreathers out there are too stupid to make the distinction even if it is given to them in simple black and white. They would rather bitch about a perceived injustice, even if it is blatantly untrue. Sad, but true.

I am more impressed by the quote by Jessi Hale....
CU junior Jessi Hale is conflicted, saying $2 million seems like a steep cost to pay when the school is cash-strapped.
Admittedly, she's not much of a football fan, she said.
"Our team has sucked my entire college career," Hale said.

Fantastic young lady, Fantastic! :yeahthat: :congrats: :gobuffs:

Now it makes sense... the majority of your state is Republican :smile2:

If anyone's going to Ohio State next year, here's a sign idea:

"Thanks for buying out our coach, Ohio St!"
