EB negatives

I AM GOING TO STATE THIS UPFRONT, EB MAY BE A GREAT COACH AND THE NEXT HEAD COACH AT CU; A COACH I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY WITH. I AM NOT AN EB HATER.

I have heard all of the rumors about EB over the years but started doing some investigating and here is what I have found.

a rick reilly (i know, take it with a grain of salt) SI article from 1989, titled "WHAT PRICE GLORY?" Pretty damning towards the culture around Mac’s program.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1081293/posts

EB portion
Kanavis McGhee, Colorado's 6 ft. 5 in., 230-pound sophomore linebacker, and Eric Bieniemy, also a sophomore and the Buffaloes' leading rusher last season, were arrested in a bar fight in February 1988, after McGhee sent a 5 ft. 7 in., 158-pound bouncer, Roger Hogoboom, to the hospital with a fractured cheekbone and cuts that required plastic surgery. McGhee said he was angry that Bieniemy had been called a "little ******" by a bar patron. Hogoboom was injured when he tried to separate the combatants. Both pleaded no contest -- McGhee to a charge of second-degree assault, and Bieniemy to charges of disorderly conduct and fighting in public. They received deferred sentences and were ordered to perform community service. They were also subjected to unspecified disciplinary action by McCartney.

An April 2004 article in the Daily Bruin -
This goes into several negative and positive EB aspects, worth the read.

http://www.dailybruin.com/index.php/article/2004/04/football-tough-love?&cp=1

Here is a list of things I have been able to find out on EB

- was arrested in feb of 1988 for a bar fight
- 1990 arrest after a skirmish with the aurora fire department at his parents home (bs by all accounts, he was sticking up for his parents when the fire dept wanted to knock holes in the wall) ultimately suspended for the first game of the 1990 season, the Disneyland Pigskin Classic game against Tennessee in Anaheim
- 1991 charged with speeding and driving with a suspended license

- 1994 allegedly choked a female parking attendant at a Colorado football game and was subsequently banned from the university for a disputed length of time
- DUI in April 2001
- Marcus Houston transferred primarily because of issues with EB
- UCLA running backs Tyler Ebell and Wendell Mathis both transferred after not getting along with EB

- EB is going to be a love him or hate him coach from a players perspective

"We've got enough altar boys," he said. "We need some athletes."

True today as it was then.

No wonder there was trouble in Westwood.

“Guys were having problems with him making everybody work just as hard as everybody else,” Groves said. “That wasn’t the style that they were used to. Guys had problems with him treating everybody the same.”

Is there a historically softer team than UCLA?

Another negative about EB: many here cannot spell his name correctly, including those with his name in their handle.

Marcus Houston was a prima donna pussy. I love how everyone love to blame EB for him leaving and then conveniently forgets how he ended up as the ****ING THIRD STRING TAILBACK for the Piece of F U C K I N G S H I T Lammies! Give me a ****ING break!

The only thing that worries me is the DUI back in 2001. The other stuff was way long ago and honestly, I have no problem with him kicking that bouncer's ass.

If EB does get the nod, I am sure the DUI will be brought up by the media. One thing they could do is ask him to take a prominent role on campus with some kind of campaign against drunk driving or some sort of fund raiser for awareness of alcohol dangers. Get out there and make it a preemptive type thing and not only will it kill any media attack, it can do some good for the community too.

Now lets get him in here!!!

from what I read, it sounds like EB' big buddy beat up the bouncer. EB saved the rough stuff for the female parking officer.

How would you have felt if Mac Brown had been able to lure EB over. He tried, that is a fact!

Parking nazi, bouncer, whatever... Those were 20 years ago, and who knows what really happened there.

Mack Brown also hired Greg Davis. And Mack wasn't hiring a head coach....

Good to see you have dropped the act and have gone straight to trolling.

Out of all the reasons to beat up on HornBuff you chose a poor one. He's pretty much correct with his observations in this thread.

--If we continue to harrass nebraska fans for Tom Osborne's misguided support of Lawrence Philips, what does it say about us if we're willing to hire a Head Coach with a record of violence against women on our own campus? I wasn't even aware of those charges until today. Can anybody confirm the validiy? Choking a girl for doing her (admittedly annoying) job is a lot different than throwing a bookbag. I'm aware it was a while ago, but stilll....

But back to the topic:

Bieniemy is a great Buff. But I don't get all of the support for him as HC. Not at all. 'Leash, ITB, Valdez are all guys I really respect on this board. Can any of you give me good reasons--that aren't emotional, and not based entirely on a role that's mostly unrelated to the job of HC--to support EB for Head Coach at CU? I acknowledge the importance of a good, credible recruiter and fully agree that EB brings that aspect.

My reasons against:

--Not long ago, CU hired a football coach that was a stellar recruiter but lacked any coordinator experience. It was Dan Hawkins. Buff fans want to be careful to not repeat past mistakes. But hiring a mid-major coach wasn't the mistake. The mistake was hiring a position coach. Why would we gamble on EB, when he is completely unproven as a coordinator, let alone as a head coach? I would much rather hire somebody who was proven in the role as coordinator or HC in a successful BCS level program, or a head coach who demonstrated aptitude at turning around programs at at least the D1 level.

--I don't want to see another one of my on-field heroes reduced to ridicule as a coach at CU. Is it my imagination or do Hagan and Bieniemy have similar coaching styles? Obviously EB has enjoyed some success as a running backs coach, so the comparison ends there, but both seem capable of alienating good players. I don't want our University's leadership to make a less than rational choice because we're all wearing black and gold glasses.

--People are clamoring for a firey coach. Fire is great for a position coach or a defensive coordinator, but I prefer my head coaches to be mostly calm, collected field generals. And who knows, EB may be a calm guy in his role as head coach. We don't know, however, because he's never done the job. That's the whole point, we don't know a thing about his capabilities as a head coach.

--At this low point in our football program's history, it seems imprudent to make an emotional hire on an unproven commodity.

Its a stretch to compare EB and LP for starters apples and oranges IMO, but if EB was in fact violent with a female it will change my point of view.

As you say back on topic, is EB my first choice as HC not at all. If we can get a Miles,Belotti or Richt thats ****ing fantastic, but if not I would rather see Bohn go the Mac/EB route rather than Calhoun or McFizpatrick or whoever. Bottom line is I dont trust Bohn at all.

Agree on your first point. Different degrees of violence, probably, but it really affects how I view his candidacy. On the other hand, my real reasons against the hire are more related to his experience.

Resume shun.

Marcus Houston = Pu$$y
UCLA = Bunch of Pu$$ies that wear baby blue

Pu$$ies shouldn't play football.

Bring on EB

Wally, Great coordinator does not equal great head coach. Head coach wears a bunch more hats than a coordinator. If a head coach can lead with enthusiasm, and is able to hire quality coordinators that bring energy to the program and get it going in the right direction, the wins will take care of themselves. It ain't the Xs and Os. There are plenty of great x's and o's guys. We are in need of an attitude transplant. EB could be that guy, there are other guys that could do that as well.

Good point. It's odd that I'm so hung up on EB and the coordinator because I agree with what you just said. Also I've long felt that Les Miles was a winner as a head coach, in spite of not really being an Xs and Os kind of guy (just guessing).

So I concede to your experience on the matter, both on knowing EB personally as well as your experience with coaches of all levels.

But for whatever reason, EBs lack of experience at the top level of the game still concerns me. Maybe because he's unproven in that role.
