Is the cupboard bare?

Listening to Joe Williams/Frei/Clough/Buddy Martin and getting a little pissed. Basically, they are saying "it will be a very tough next few years because the cupboard is bare in Boulder."

What do you think? To me, we are better off next year than these guys believe. However, 2012 - 2013 could be pretty lean unless these guys can come in and just blow recruiting away.

We're a middle of the road team from a talent standpoint. Good enough to be better in about a third of our schedule, a toss up in about a third, and an underdog in about a third. But there's enough there to compete with just about anyone.

Somewhere between 6-7 and 8-5 is where I'd put this team for next year. We shouldn't be worse than that.

The cupboard is not bare. But we need to do well in the 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes or it could get bare in a hurry.

What Nik said. We do need to find some impact players in the 2011 class and the 2012 class needs to be a foundational class because we will have a ton of scholarships to give.

I keep hearing that we have 12 to give this year. But the paper, the other day, said 16. What is it?

Most of the experts here say around 16 pending attrition and I trust nik and others more than any paper here.

16 is a good number to use.

If you're seeing a lower number, it's probably because the person is taking into account the verbal commitments we already have (Berglund, Daigh, Farrow, Kelley, Sherry).

Or maybe they are just looking at the number of seniors we have graduating but not accounting for the fact that we were under the 85 limit this season.

I think we're in decent shape for next year. Just basing this off the last depth chart from the cornholer game, but we return 9 starters on O (assuming Hanson comes back healthy) and 7 starters on D coming back.

Breaking that down, on O we lose Solder & McKnight. Both big losses, but Givens might be able to fill in decently and Clemons & PRich are still around (and maybe W.Jefferson if he doesn't stick at RB). I believe we also get Simmons back since I thought he redshirted this year. For D, we lose Beatty & Sipili and Smith & Brown. Those pairs will be tough to replace but Nobriga did a good job filling in for Major and Rippy or Ahles might be able to step up. Corners are gonna be tough, no idea back there.

I think you're dead on that '12 and '13 could be difficult if we don't fill some holes.

What that means is that we damn well better overachieve next year or we very well could start out our big 12 tenure with 3 very bad years in a row. That would NOT be good.

Off the top of my head, we have:

4/5 returning starting O-linemen with a few pretty good recruits in waiting. They either improved at the end of last year, or we changed our strategy enough to benefit them. Either way it's a positive. Unfortuantely, they're probably getting another O-Line coach next year. Brutal. I'll say they're ok though.

Top RB coming back. Is Torres still on the team? Another big redshirted kid. Also, we just hopefully got a top flight RB coach as OC, so getting recruits here shouldn't be tough. RB is pretty easy to pick up quickly, so I think we'll be ok here too.

Hansen's coming back, big RS freshman Hirshman. Servicable

TClem, Paul Rich, Will Jeff will probably move back out here? Is Simmons gonna figure it out? We might be ok for another year here. 2 years? Not so much.

So The Offense looks like it'll be pretty good.

DLine should be solid. Nate Bonsu comes back, I thought he was pretty good his freshman year. Most everybody else returns.

Let's not go into LBs or the secondary. Maybe we can play a 8-2-1 defense......Parker Orms, you're the 1. Get ready to ball.

Don't think the cubboard is bare. One thing that Hawk could do pretty well was recruit. Developing talent? Negative. Get them actually into school...hit and miss. But we had some pretty good players sign LOIs here. Hopefully they'll actually get better under the new regime.

Speaking of this, I think this new regime might still run off some players when they find out they have to actually run and hit people in practice, not go to Eliches and have slip 'n' slide days. Whoever is still here next year will be better for it.

Honestly, I think the Lack of Hawkins the Coach will be such a major factor that this team will look night and day better next year. We're gonna be nasty! Go Buffs!

Yeah, we should be decent next year. One thing to remember: Those returning numbers include kickers and punters. So, of the 11 "starters" on offense, we are only returning 8, right? Doesn't the 9 number include Grossnickle? Nevertheless, a good number of returning guys. I'm looking forward to watching these guys hit the recruiting trail. Especially if EB decides to join the staff. Maybe a guaranteed 5 year contract and an increased assistant's salary and flux in Minnesota will entice him.

It's a bit scary to think about and I'm hoping that Embree (and staff) really will be able to recruit like crazy and coach the kids up that we currently have. When I was walking through the depth chart, there are a lot of current JRs that will be painful to replace after next year.

I hate to put pressure on the first year of a new HC, but we need to make a positive spash in the conf next year.

The other thing the talking heads are saying is that CU will have to bring in jucos and that CU has too many restrictions to get many jucos. I'm not a juco fan, myself.

Sorry, I wasn't counting special teams, so those numbers I gave were just out of the 11 guys on the field for O or D, not the special teams portion. From the depth chart for specialists, we return Grossnickle and Iverson (long snapper) but lose Goodman. We lose Hawkins (holder) and Silipo (short snapper).

I touched on it briefly with Hansen, but there are a good number of guys we lost to injury this year. Assuming they have healthy returns, we'll get these guys back in the fold next year:
OG (jr) Daniels
S (so) Ewing
QB (jr) Hansen
RB (jr) Lockridge
LB (so) Major
S (fr) Orms
S (jr) Perkins

Offense:
QB - Hansen: Mobile, has experience
RB - Stewart: Should be one of the top backs in Pac 12
WR1 - Clemons: 4 star
WR2 - Richardson: 4 Star should be one of top WR's in country
WR3 - replacing McKnight
TE - Deehan
LT - replacing Solder Givens? If so 4 star
LG - Adkins
C - Iltis
RG - Miller: 5 star if returns
RT - Bakhtiari

Defense:
DE - Kasa 4/5 star
DT1 - Cunningham
DT2 - Pericak
LIZ - replacing Beatty
MIKE - replacing Sipili
WILL - Major 4 star
CB1 - replacing Smith
CB2 - replacing Brown
S1 - Perkins
S2 - Polk 4 star
Nickel - Orms

Specialists:
K - replacing Goodman
P - Grossnickle
LS - Iverson
SS - replacing Silipo
H - replacing Hawkins
PR - Clemons
KR1 - Lockridge
KR2 - Jaffee

See bolded, worried about our secondary next year, but I wouldn't say the cupboard is bare by any means. Pretty talented, especially at the skill positions.

Irv and Joe are on ESPN radio 1600

Not Irv. He's out. No one knows if its permanent or temporary. Also, I think Joe is moving in January and no one knows if Irv will join him or not. Irv is recuperating from a lobotomy. Wait, I mean hip surgery. Sorry. I got my body parts mixed up.

OK, didn't realize that. I stopped listening to them when they left The Fan a while back. What about the Dixie Chick, does she still work with them?

I think she stopped "working" for them once they couldn't get it up anymore.

What happened to MTM?

Max is finally healthy but had to get over the mental hurdle of trusting his knees. Look for him to be back in the mix this spring, possibly start as a junior next year, start as a senior and then get a 6th year medical waiver to start 1 more year.

schedule is tough next year, but i bet the Buffs win 6.

transition year.
