Cal, Oregon and Florida have been Farmer's 3 visits.

Obviously, this would be the coup to trump all recruiting coups if the new staff could somehow land Farmer. Don't hold your breath. But it's fun to think about the possibility.

Serious question with no real way to answer it.

A lot of these top guys go to USC because they are promised a pipeline into the pros. How many of them end up buried behind other guys who got there a year earlier or that the coaches just like more and never get the playing time to really develop.

SC has had a lot of 4* and even some 5* guys who never surfaced until very late in their careers. They had a lot of physical talent but didn't make it in the NFL because they hadn't really developed their skills. Patterson who transfered to CU this year is not the best example but a good one. Had he gone to a different school his athletic ability would have had him on the field 2-3 years earlier. Nobody knows if he would have developed skills to match his talent but we know that 4 years at SC and a year with a lot of injuries at CU and he never got a chance to show and develop what he could do with all that speed and quickness.

I know that every top end recruit figures that this won't be an issue because they are used to being good enough to force themselves onto the field but at certain schools they are going to run into a bunch of guys at their position who are just as gifted and have already been in the system. At SC this is the situation at WR and RB, at other schools this is the situation at other positions like OL or LB.

I look forward to the day when CU's recruiting pitch is, "If you come to CU, we will win Pac-12 titles and compete for national championships. If you don't come to CU, we will win Pac-12 titles and compete for national championships. If you're afraid of competition, we don't want you."

Agreed that this is where I want us to be. As a school you get the best talent you can get and if some of it sits that just means that you have somebody better. At the same time if a kid is an elite athlete he will have the competitive drive to think that it doesn't matter who else is there, he will rise to the top.

I remember during the 90's CU had some guys who were backups get shots at playing in the NFL including one or two who got drafted. Not going to take the time to research names.

My only point is that whoever is advising the kid should make sure that the kid knows what he is up against.

There have been a few guys like Cassel but at the same time and this is why I say the question is not answerable, there are other guys who have the talent that would have been developed at another school who never get a shot because of who they are behind.

I'm starting to think that we'll have to depend on Lane's ineptitude to kill off USC. There's still a mystique about the place that won't go away without some prolonged mediocrity.

We can all hope that under Kiffen U$C becomes the next Notre Dame, the school when great talent goes to die. If you look at the number of 4* and 5* guys that have gone to ND over the past few coaches they have had it is truly amazing how little success they have had. We can hope that the same thing will happen for SC.

A part of this comes from the fact that some of the guys get rated that high simply because they are being recruited by ND and/or SC and other big names, we have had the talent rating discussions here ad nauseum but we know that ratings often are based less on ability than on who is recruiting a guy.

Another part of this is that a lot of these guys are rated highly because they completely dominated in HS. Unfortunately in the long run part of the reason they dominated in HS is because they matured quicker, they were literally men among boys with a 5 o'clock shadow at age 14. The trouble is that maturing early they sometimes are done maturing and don't continue to develop in college where the babyfaced 3* kid gets 3 inches taller adds 50lbs of muscle and becomes an animal at 22 years old.

I also think that Lane is another Slick Rick in that he doesn't think the rules apply to him. Even with the sanctions that USC is under already it wouldn't surprise me if Kiffen isn't "stretching" the rules to get the guys he wants or at least ignoring those same actions by others including boosters. I don't think the NCAA would ever levy a death penalty on SC like they did to SMU but if the media gets wind of something happening and publicizes it the next round of sanctions might be enough to knock SC back for a decade or so. Things like little or no off-campus recruiting, drop to 50-55 schollies for 3 years, etc. Essentially turn them into the nations richest FCS school.

Speaking of Slick Rick, what is he up to trying to save his job? Next target of the NCAA? I have no doubt that the USC boosters would push an investigation if for nothing else than to get the attention off of themselves.
 
It's going to be tough rooting these Socal players away from their hometown team. These guys are probably like Berglund in a lot of respects. They grew up with the Trojans, it's close to home, an easy choice for them. That being said, Kiffin is an idiot and will continue USC on their decline IMO. The talent will always be the same but I think they gave him a run because he would bring a buzz and if he sucks, well, he just soaked up their probation years and that's that. I don't see the Kiffin experiment lasting a long time. In fact, if I was USC and Jeff Fisher gets fired this year by any chance, I'd punt Kiffin in a heartbeat.

True - but USC and UCLA only have so many schollies to give every year. There is plenty of talent in the region for the Buffs to build off of. They won't clean up the 5*s and even most of the 4*s. but if they get in there and pick up the highly regarded 3*s and a few 4*s... things will be good
