So I'm thinking we have around 16 scholarships to give

Any guesses on how the new staff breaks them down by position? My best guess:

QB-2
RB-1
WR-2
OL-3
DL-3
LB-2
DB-3

16's not a bad number, abs.

http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/41374-Buffs-Roster-for-2011

We're at 17, which would have been 18 if we hadn't redshirted Andre Simmons.

Figure we've got commitments to 2 grayshirt players (OT Lewis & WR Duncan). That cuts it to 15.

Or, instead, you could take the transfer of S Emilien from the 17 and choose the 16 number.

Then there's expected attrition with a coaching change.

But we also have the issue hanging out there on whether Hawkins awarded any non-senior walkons with scholarships before he left (a couple were deserving).

And you always lose a couple in the spring when they get buried on the depth chart, get hurt, or get asked to change positions

So 16 is an educated guess and as good of a number to use as any right now.

BB - did your positional breakdown assume Lewis, Duncan and Emilien already on the team or are they 3 of your 16 scholarships?

I had forgotten about Lewis, but my positional breakdown did take into account Duncan and Emilien. We really need to bolster the underclassmen depth at WR and we just need safeties period. Lewis might take a scholarship that was going to be given to another OL this cycle.

You think we need more safties? You have smith, orms, perkins, olatoye, the transfers from michigan and georgia, polk etc...

Wr could use some depth, as well as ....I won't say it...

Working off 16:

QB - 2
RB - 1
FB - 1
TE - 1
OL - 3
DT - 1
DE - 1
LB - 3
CB - 2
S - 1

I'm assuming that 1 of our 3 TEs who redshirted makes the move to DE. If they all stay at TE, then no TEs and 2 DEs.

So is it confirmed that the 2 grayshirts are counting towards this recruiting cycle? I suppose it doesn't matter a great deal with the 85 total limit, but....

just curious

Actually, we will count them toward last year's 25 since we were under.

We'll still only be able to sign up to the 85 limit this year. But by pushing those scholarships back to 2010 it allows us to be further under the 25 limit for the 2011 class.

This starts to matter when we are recruiting for 2012. We may end up signing 30 or more guys, but how we would do it is to get a number of early enrollees and count them in the 2011 class for NCAA purposes. That way, we're still at 25 or less for the 2012 class.

USC is a good example of a program using that loophole. They plan to sign 9 or 10 early enrollees this year and play a shell game with their annual limits so that they can bring in more guys despite the NCAA penalties.
