Funny story from today...

For any of you who didn't catch Big Al and DMac today on 104.3:

Al told a story about a recent "CU coach" that went on a recruiting trip to Houston and was meeting with one of Kanavis McGhee's players.

This unnamed :):cough::Hawk::cough::) coach was trying to get the recruit to take a visit to CU, going through the whole "Boulder is such a beautiful campus, yadda yadda..." speech.

Kanavis said something like "Yeah...you could take him to The Hill, Boulder falls, Dal Ward, Chataquah..." He kept naming the stuff that makes Boulder desirable.

The coach asked Kanavis: "Wow...how do you know so much about Boulder?"

THE DUDES NAME IS HANGING IN THE STADIUM for crissake!

That about sums up the past 5 years here.

There are way too many similar stories floating around, expect to hear more as people loosen up and don't have to worry about being PC.

****ing Hawkins :pissed:

How does the coach NOT know that an ex-CU guy is one of the coaches at a school where he's going to recruit a player from? Absolutely incompetent.

lawd, that is flat-out terrible.

i mean seriously... that makes me sick.

How unprepared was he in general? Is it too much to ask to do some research on the kid and the coaches or his HS before you set off? If you don´t know it yourself, it should be in the documents on the kid ... and even if it isn´t there, hey, ever heard of Google?

Makes it more apparent that the gig was just a job & nothing more for him....guy gave 0 ****s about the University, the traditions, the fans, the institution, the former players, anything...which was ultimately his downfall, as those were all weapons that could have helped him succeed

I'm calling BS.

Most of the time I would agree.

Unfortunately I have heard way to much about Hawkins to discredit this story.

Hawkins came in with an idea that CU history was going to start the day he showed up on campus and that he was going to build it in his image. Ex-players who had been involved in the program and wanted to stay involved where ignored or had the door slammed in their faces. Traditions that had been part of CU football for years were suddenly and without explanation purged from the program. Kanavis is not the only ex-Buff who as a HS coach has talked about meeting an indifferent or worse response from Hawkins. Moschetti has said many similar things including attempting to get Hawkins to recruit players he had who Hawkins either ignored or brushed off that went to other D1 programs.

In contrast as busy as Embree naturally is in his first few days on the job I have already heard a number of ex-Buffs who have either had Embree reach out to them or make time for them when they called including Kordell and a couple of others in the media. This relationship building can do nothing but good in terms of the media image of the program, the recruiting image of the program, and the willingness of these guys to make the variety of contributions of time, money, and PR to the program and the school.

I don't agree. I think that he gave his heart and soul to the job. The problem was that his ego got in the way. It was going to be his program, his way, and he was going to be responsible.

As great as Mac was, as egotistical as Slick Rick was, as intense as Barnett was they all understood that they were a part of something bigger than they were, even when Mac won the NC. Hawk wanted a clean slate, what was here before didn't matter, who was here before was irrelevant, it was about the Hawk way.

This kind of mentality very rarely works anywhere, doesn't work at CU, didn't work for McD and the Broncos.

Successfull coaches don't take credit for building the ship, they just take responsibility for keeping it going the right direction at the right speed.

Not so fast. I can match that story, I can.

For those who may not know, 104.3 posts full shows online. You can listen on the web or you can download them as podcasts. Click on "SUBCRIBE VIA ITUNES" if you want to have iTunes download it automatically every day. You can transfer it to your iPod that way, too.

That Kanavis story is in the middle of the first hour.

They usually have the podcast online 20 to 30 minutes after the hour airs. They cut out all the commercials and updates. It's the best way to listen.

I have a couple of good ones that really show what the guy was about.....it was all about him. His ego was incredible.

It's worth a listen. Some of the Kordell stuff was awesome.

Two way street.

The Buffs from the past never really welcomed Hawkins into the fold. But Hawkins never really gave proper respect for what they accomplished.

Regardless, it's over. New era. Buff pride. Not an issue any more. **** it. Let's look to the future.

So the Buffs from the past were supposed to embrace the guy who shunned them, banned their traditions, lost to a I-AA team in his first game and followed that up with at least one truly embarrassing loss in each subsequent season? Okaaaaay.....

That was ALL on Hawkins.

THey never actually said the coach was Dan. They concealed that although it wouldnt have surprised me.

It sounded very much like they were talking about an assistant coach to me. It doesn't matter if it was Hawk or someone else on the staff, though. It was on Hawk's watch. How the hell do you not have every HS coach with Buff ties identified? I wouldn't care if the coach was a former walk-on who only played special teams. Any half-competent recruiter would have known. :wow:

It's not like he was some reserve punter from the 70s. McGhee is one of the greatest Buffs of all time!
