Interesting.
It stands to reason, though. I guess they were paying their last guy a boatload of money, and wouldn't be able to afford to pay the next guy nearly as much. Add in the fact that KU is in a dying conference and whoever takes over that job will have to work his ass off to find a conference home for KU, and the job is becoming less and less attractive every day.

The new guy will also have to deal with the ticket scandal that involved a bunch of employees in the athletic department..... It isn't going away anytime soon.

this. and every article i saw about it...used the phrase "angry boosters and alums"...mad about the ticket scandal, admin $$$ abuses under the previous regime, hiring Gill without much experience 2 years removed from a BCS win (KU fan got a little taste in football and they want more).....which can't be a good situation to step in to.
