The best Colorado prep player since Chauncey

Denver East High School rocks.

The great thing for Collier is that Rudy Carey, East's coach, is a good guy and a very good coach. He'll learn what he needs for the next level and have a great time while there. Hard work, yes, but he will enjoy playing, too.

Yeah, I had heard of Chris Thomas, but this kid also sounds really special. CO HS Bball needs kids like these.

“He has exceeded our expectations,” Carey said. “We knew he was good. He has another level to his game. He has another high school level to his game, and I’m talking about able to play with the very best. And he’s probably in the top 10 players in the state of Colorado. As a freshman.
The part of the quote in bold makes me question how good this kid really is. Chauncey was BY FAR the best player in the state his freshman year.

TRIVIA: Billups won CO Mr. Basketball his sophomore, junior and senior years. Who won it his freshman year? Rep to the correct answer.

Chucky Sprolling?

ugh...wasn't it Chaunc's teammate his freshman year? I want to say Sean Vandiver, but I know he was at CU before Chauncey...

damn it...I'm pretty sure it was Chauncey's big on his GW team...am I close?

Trick question.

Troy Murphy?

Vandiver was at CU in 90 (a senior in Tom Miller's last year, I believe), he's too old. plus, i don't think he's from CO.

From Neil Devlin at the Post:

Yo: there wasn't a mr. Basketball until 1993, Chauncey won the first as a sophomore

Although, I think they still had the Gatorade Player of the Year before Mr. Basketball. Pete Hefty won it in 91-92. Ben Baum won it in 92-93. Chauncey won it 93-94, and 94-95. I don't remember Hefty or Baum.

Pete Hefty, from Wheat Ridge, played for CU for a year or two before transferring to DU.

As I recall, Pete Hefty actually played as a freshman for CU ... had a great first game and then faded ... I believe that he ended up transferring (DU?) where he finished out his college playing days.
