Comcast purchase of NBC FINALIZED

:woot:

NBC + Comcast would be a great tie-in. If we could work it out so we had a "Game of the Week" night game plus the Championship Game on NBC, a few 2nd tier games on Versus, and the rest on a Pac-12 Network... we'd have a really great setup.

Regardless whether it breaks that way or not, it only helps drive the price up when there are 3 parties bidding instead of 2.

I thought NBC was purchased by Kabletown (with a K). Wait, that was 30 Rock...the best comedy on tv, by the way.

I like the idea of an NBC night game. If they keep the Notre Lame, they could use it to promo the night game, the way ABC does with their day/night package. And Saturday nights are really dumping grounds for most of the networks these days aside from ABC's football night, so NBC might find the idea interesting...

It would be nice to see NBC covering a late afternoon game -- say, 4 pm pac time. It would up the exposure on the (l)east coast since the game wouldn't be telecast late on the atlantic coast.

When does the ACC deal expire? If one of the players is left out after that expect a big payday. Not that there shouldn't be one already, but still. The same is true for the ACC if the Pac12 one comes up first.

The ACC just got a new big deal. I think it expires in 2018 if not 2022. The Pac-12 should exceed the money that the ACC is gonig to earn.

Can this potentially screw us satellite customers since we cannot receive games on comcasts sports network?

Thinking the same thing. Hopefully it will not become a cable only conference.

If you have comcast as your internet provider, you can get the P12 games. Now that they own NBC, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to re-negoitaite the golden dummies TV contract.

I can see satellite customers getting screwed a lot of ways in this deal. I honestly don't think it ever should have been approved.

Fellas,

I believe that the P12 will get ESPN in addition to the P12 Network so it's too soon to see if dish people will get screwed.

Dish people might not get screwed on PAC10 stuff, but they're likely to get screwed on NBC content since Comcast and the satellite providers don't play very nice.

:stupid:

Comcast was behind the disappearance of Versus from Directv for the better part of a year. They own E!, Style Network and Comcast Sports Net California, all of which have disappeared from Dish Network or have at last come close to it. G4TV disappeared from Directv last fall. Now Comcast owns one of the Big 4 broadcast networks and channels like USA and SyFy?? I can't imagine they aren't going to dial up the pressure on the satellite providers and other cable operators.

I think it's a terrible idea to give a major provider that much control over that much content...

I'm concerned as a DirecTV subscriber. I hate cable. And no, hate is not too strong of a word. I hate cable. It sucks.

I'm pretty happy that you don't have an opinion on anything... things might get tense around here if you did!

I am actually a cable subscriber, but I agree with you 100%. This type of acquisition is filled with conflicts of interest and potential anti-competitive behavior. However, if this increases cash to CU athletics, I may be willing to sell my soul.

You can bet comcast will raise the price of those channels and dish network will be in a battle with them just like they did with fox sports. Comcast has horrible HD service when it comes to sports and they do not offer all of the sports channels.

I am a Dish subscriber and I am in your camp. I switched to Comcast at one point and switched back as soon as the committment was done. Comcast absolutely sucks dick in the HD and customer service areas.

demonstrates to what extent the FCC is in the pocket of industry despite claims to the contrary from this president, the last, and the one before that. the FCC is an administrative agency which is part of the executive branch, btw.

And in other news the rich keep getting richer. I guess I can't blame them for trying to get as much money as possible its capitalism at work but Damn I'm glad CU is done dealing with these bastards!

Well that pretty much eliminates UT from ever coming to the Pac. No way do the other institution vote to invite them while maintaining their own proprietary network. Cya hopefully for good Whorns.

Yup. This doesn't bother me in the least. If we were still in the Big 12, it would scare the living sh*t out of me. Talk about a doomed conference.

You don't think 9 teams playing the role of the Washington Generals to UT's Globetrotters is a model for success???

Part of the approval process was to put in place rules as to excluding the dish. Comcast may ignore those.... but I know it was part of the approval to make SURE they don't screw dish customers.
