Tutorial on USC's recruiting amidst penalties

Here's the basic situation:

NCAA penalty was 75 total scholarship limit for the program (down from 85) and a class limit of 15 for this year and next (down from 25).

USC has 25 commitments right now.

8 are signed and will count back to the 2010 class.

The 17 verbals for the 2011 class exceeds the NCAA penalty by 2.

USC is appealing the penalty and the NCAA's decision will not be known before National Signing Day (Feb 2).

USC is banking on winning the case outright or having the penalty changed to 5 scholarships a year over 3 years instead of 10 a year over 2.

So they might sign 20 in this class and have 80 guys overall.

But they also might sign 25 to get to 85 and bet that they'll win.

If they over-sign, the penalty will be that the NCAA would add an additional year of scholarship reductions equal to the number of players by which USC over-signs this year.

If it loses, USC will also be making cuts after National Signing Day to get down to 15/75.

Clear now?

OC Register: USC could win back scholarships via appeal

It doesn't sound like USC is the only one banking on a good outcome. How do the commits know who will get cut after NSD if they lose?

If this were the spineless NCAA that gave OU a slap on the wrist for a couple guys getting paid to not sell cars, I'd think USC has a chance of winning their appeal. However, I think the NCAA is going to come down hard on them to prove a point. Just take your punishment, USC. You earned it. The fact that USC is over-signing, betting on the come that they'll win their appeal is surely not going to sit well with the infractions committee.

You have to think rival schools are banging on this drum right now. It wouldn't be surprising if USC had a couple last minute defections.

My guess is that they are telling each commit, "it's not YOU!" But yeah, I would think that would make their class ripe for defections.

my problem with this is USC is thumbing there nose at the NCAA and if the NCAA did what its supposed to they would reject the appeal and add another year of sanctions... but the NCAA is a spineless jelly fish

Amazing and I do think they will see some defections. I know I would be helping and encouraging my son to look elsewhere. Too much risk if you might be on the bubble and really have no idea what the coaches are thinking.

after the ncaa let newton and auburn skate, i don't see how they can avoid letting usc off the mat. usc and reggie basically did the same thing as auburn and cam and they got the book thrown at them.

just saying...

the new lesson is "go ahead and buy the best player in the country. just don't tell him personally. work thru an intermediary like a dad. and, then reap the benefits--- national championship, heisman trophy, and ****ing coach of the year award for chizik."

the whole thing is a bad ****ing joke. i hate the ncaa. they suck dead green donkey dick.

they **** over jeremy bloom. they smack CU with a lack of institutional control for feeding ****ing walkons at a buck more than allowed in a self-reported violation that 2 months later wasn't even an ncaa infraction any longer. and, they let usc go for years before doing anything. then, they let auburn skate entirely.

it isn't about education. it isn't about the welfare of the student athletes. hell, it isn't even about most of the member schools. it is about protecting the ****ing cash cow.

hypocritical, double-dealing, bastards, the lot of 'em.

I have to say that after the Auburn and Ohio State decisions, the NCAA looks pretty damn spineless.

Speaking of Ohio State, didn't they have exactly the same training table violations as CU with their walk-ons at exactly the same time... but the NCAA did not penalize them because they didn't get around to hearing the matter until after they had decided it would no longer be a violation?

No, they did penalize them. A similar penalty to ours, actually.

But sadly, the NCAA didn't inform T-OSU of the decions until 366 days had passed. They only had a one-year limit, so the penalty was nullified.

So the NCAA did the right thing, see, but they just took one day too long to do it. So close!

What a ****ing joke. Seriously, what more do you need to know once you compare our training table issues to OSU's. A joke.

The Auburn stuff is a long way from being settled. The NCAA doesn't work quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't some serious infractions there and big time penalties. We'll just have to wait another couple years to see it. Just like we had to wait a couple years to see what happened at USC.

Here's the other thing - USC is basically thumbing their nose at the NCAA right now. I have to think they'll come out of this in worse shape than they went into it. Stupid move by the Kiffen-ator. He's never exactly been known as a genius, though.

I thought Pat Haden was supposed to be cleaning this up as AD? Or has he decided to be just like Mike Garrett and let Kiffen run wild?

Kiffen is not long for that job. He's there to absorb the hit (much like we used call FFGs, "missile sponges"). After their NCAA Time Out is over, I fully expect that they'll make a play for a "big time" coach, preferably one with SC ties. Paging Jeff Fisher...

After watching the SMU 30 for 30 thing, I wouldnt put anything past USC. Kiffin is a jerkoff and I actually expect him to cheat, seems to fit him well. I knew alot about the SMU thing but it was even deeper and more serious than I knew about. I wouldnt doubt for a second that $C's practices havent changed much, they might just be more careful about it now. Before, they didnt give a **** who knew and it was pretty obvious they were up to something.

Is this any surprise? Of course not.

U$C is one of those schools that thinks that the rules don't apply to them. Add to that a coach in Kiffen who went to the Rick Neuheisal seminar on compliance, "If you don't get caught it's all good, if you do get caught, blame somebody else."

U$C believes that they are bigger than the NCAA and that if they stand their ground they will get away with whatever they do just because they are so darned special.

That same attitude is how they get kids to believe that if they commit to U$C they will not only be okay but be the next superstar instead of all the other kids who are being told the same thing.

In a way, I applaud U$C for having brass balls.

First, they hired Kiffin and Orgeron. To do this in the midst of NCAA sanctions was pure balls. It's an open secret that these were the guys most responsible for known for playing loose with the recruiting rules at U$C in the early part of the decade.

Now, they're going about business as usual while completely ignoring the NCAA sanctions they are under.

This scares me a bit, though. We can't have the NCAA reacting to this arrogance by destroying the marquee program in our conference. Let's hope that the sanctions are upheld, Kiffin is a failure, and U$C gives CU a window for a return to glory without their own program getting knocked so low that it's hard for them to recover.

Fear not, the university of spoiled children will always have enough support and resources to bounce back quickly from just about any penalty they are going to receive.

Screw this, if they are arrogant enough to think that they don't have to go by the rules knock them down to SMU size. The PAC 12 will do fine with a weak USC. It didn't hurt the Big 8/12 much when OU was on sanction and struggled after. Better answer, let's take advantage of the opening and build CU back into a consistent top 10/top 5 program and become the marque program in the conference.

As long as the PAC has a couple of schools being talked about legitimately for a slot in the NC game the conference will be alright. Oregon looks like they have the commitment to stay at that level, let CU jump up into the same discussion and all will be well.

I agree with you guys for the record. U$C certainly isnt the only squad that fractures a rule or two. Cough, cough SEC lol. The NCAA isnt exactly squeakly clean themselves, they are probably the biggest hippocrites to be honest.

Word is USC does not expect to win its appeal and will indeed have to shed recruits. No doubt some players are going to get screwed by Kiffin unless they start looking around now.

My understanding is that there is no chance USC wins the appeal, but since the decision in the appeal didn't come down until after signing day, the scholarship penalties won't kick in until next year. USC knew all this going in; they are just trying to stagger the bowl ban and scholarship penalties, so they won't have both at the same time.

This is great for Colorado. The next two years CU will have a much better chance at recruiting California than this year. And this means there'll be an extra 10 premier players available the next two years that can't go to USC.
