I just read in the DP that Rashaan Salaam will be the guest speaker at the recruiting luncheon. The article said that this is his first return to an official university event. Does that strike anyone else as odd?
Was it that CU didn't invite him back?
Or did he not wish to come back to Boulder?

It feels like in the last 16 years since he won the Heisman, the athletic department has done a pretty poor job of maintaining relations with former players. I know Hawk didn't help matters when it came to honoring the traditions of the program, but really? 17 years before our sole heisman winner comes back? I really hope the hiring of Embree, Bieniemy, McGhee and all the former CU players will help mend relationships across the nation and keep former players involved in the program. Anyways, I hope Rashaan gives these new recruits some great advice and helps bring more good attention to the program!

Go Buffs!

i bet there will be a sweet RS highlight package. totally biased but the guy was as good as anyone i've seen taking that deep pitch out of the I. in college, at least. speed, power, and the ability to make the LB miss.

I agree, that's a great person to have at the luncheon. I also agree that's a crime he hasn't been there before that. WTF CU!?!?!

I've spoken with a former all American LB who said he hasn't felt welcome in over 10 years. He said both former coaches payed lip service about the past players but acted differently outside of the media.

I just don't get why a coach would not bring in former players to talk about the program. I know they are all a bunch of ego maniacs and feel they don't need any help but if I am the coach I do whatever is needed to be successful.

Meh. Former players can also be a cancer. Look at The U. A lot of their former players have caused serious problems. Former players should definitely be welcomed, but it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of them overstep their bounds. Trying to keep former players in check is a big responsibility I would imagine, since it's easy to hurt egos on their side as well and it would be easy to alienate them, especially if there's a new coach and staff in town ("this isn't how we used to do things" going back and forth). Just a possible distraction where it necessarily isn't needed.

With that said, I wish RS well at the luncheon. But he doesn't act very professional, imo. There is his stint with the Bears as well as the fact that when he does show up at the Heisman ceremony he's the only guy in jeans and a shirt, where as everyone else is wearing a suit. Hopefully that's just the past though and he can move on and be a good mentor/role model for our guys now.

I agree with everything you said, but I must say, whenever I seen RS at the Heisman, he is in a suit (didn't see this past season's ceremony)...but he does keep flashing that odd sign. Don't know if it's gang or just the new thing...or I'm just that out of it...

It may just have been one year. I think it was the year Bradford won. My former roommate from Chicago replied "must be due to all of the weed." He still harbors bad feelings towards Rashaan. Says he ruined his childhood dreams going up there, hahaha. Nonetheless, he was a great Buff.

Yeah, late afternoon was depressing...

i remember that day. i guess you let "mac be mac" but he didn't exactly prepare CU for it.

and since we had dumbasses and "hey look what i found ski bums" running the AD then, no surprise what happened later.

Heh. I always liked Marolt. I remember him getting kicked out of the Miami game. Funny stuff.

I don't remember that. Did it have to do with that bull**** offensive facemask call? Thanks Big East officials...

my point is that CU never prepared or adapted to having a real-time, serious top 10 football program when it had the chance. i've posted this a hundred times.....and my dad beat it down to me as a kid in the 80's.

instead, you had a bunch of fat cats loving it up at Dolan's for martini lunches for the next decade. we didn't take the next step when we had the chance.

Couldn't agree more with this line of thinking. My only hope is that if we can get the program back to that level in the future, that the AD, President, and Chancellor will do what is needed to maintain it with paying coaches competitive salaries and investing in some more facilities.

I'm trying to take a positive approach in that now hopefully all involved see how beneficial a successful football program can be to the university with the increased exposure and advertising and marketing potential and how hard it is to get back on top of the mountain once you fall off.

So, what is RS up to these days? Didn't he go into real estate or something?

Heard Rashaan on the Ferrell show on Sirius last night. Ferrell is like the Howard Stern of sports talk.

Anyway, I only heard about 10 minutes, but he talked about his favorite parts of his career at Colorado as playing Nebraska and the women.
He said something along the lines where he'd wake up with "like three women in bed." Also sounded like his real estate ventures went bad and that he's not doing real well. Would have loved to listen more, but per usual work had to ruin my life.
