UConn better fire its AD

Donor gives $7 million dollars to the Connecticut athletic department and has a building named after him... but doesn't even get his letter responded to?

He is asking for his recent $3 million in donations back. Sounds like he'd be happy if they fired the AD, though.

i have a buddy in Fla who KNOWS college football like a cipher and he says Whipple was forced on Randy Shannon as OC at Miami and is largely responsible for 1. the non-development of Jacory Harris and 2. Shannon being canned, basically, as a result of the O sucking.

i've heard that UCONN's fans don't like the AD and he's likely making their 2 or 3 most important hires in school history when Geno A. and Calhoun decide to hang it up....in addition to Edsall, who did a phenomenal job there. Whipple as a hire didn't exactly set the UCONN'ers on fire.

Doesn't sound like a good situation moving forward with the AD.

See the troubles a big donor can bring? I'm so glad we don't have a sugar daddy....

Pretty hilarious. You'd think a genius in the biz world would have gotten something in writing first. Cuz now it makes him look like a dumb rich guy.

It is unreasonable for even the largest donor to publicly request to be involved in the coach-selection process... but this AD is in trouble

They hired Paul Pasquonasni, not Whipple.

Whipple was a successful coach at Umass and was Big Ben's first QB coach in the NFL. Jacoby Harris isn't any good that's why Miami sucked.

Agreed. Sounds like a kid taking his ball home with him because he lost the pick-up game.

Just sounds like a whiny rich guy to me....I'll be shocked if he gets a dime back despite all his threats of legal action and whatnot...

Isn't Hathaway the former csmoo AD? He sure didn't have this kind of problem in Fort Fun!! This donor comes off as a whiny little bitch to me. I know that the schools need the $$$, but this is a good illustration, to me, of why donors should not have, or expect, any direct say in the operation of the AD.

so no one here wants to be able to vote as shareholders of a company? I see no difference.

One potentially important difference is that if your donation has strings attached, such as getting to control how it's spent, it is not tax deductible.

I'm not sure this guy is too smart if he takes this case public...

One vote as a shareholder is one thing. IMO, this guy seems to want way more than that. He should have the ear of the AD, not veto power, but throwing a temper tantrum when a decision is made that he doesn't like comes off as childish.

You can say what you want about the donor but if he has the money to donate $7 million he likely has the money to donate more in the future. A competent AD would make sure to at least repond to his concerns and try to make him feel listened to. The AD should still be the one making decisions but $7 million normally gets you a bit of attention if nothing else. Can't afford to tick of guys like this.

Mishandle it and it could also make other big money guys wonder if they want to play as well.

AD is a dumbass and donor is a cry baby. That's how I see it. Agree with MtnB, should keep big money donors happy but this dude sounds like a douche.

This.^^^. A college fb team is NOT a corporation. Do we really want the select few who have the wherewithal to win a bidding war to direct the future of the CU football enterprise? Wouldn't that make the players slave labor? And just cuz some guy is good at making sneakers or computers or more money from money, does that make him good at picking a football coach? Jeesh...

When are we going to see a huge donation from one of our big boosters to the football program?

I think they should sell portraits of Neill woelk, that should bring in some big time money.

While I agree that if the guy gave the AD $7MM he should be kept in the loop on the coaching search, this guy does come across as an uberdouche. If you don't like how they're treating you, don't give any more money. That's how this deal works. You don't ask for it back.

If the AD truly ran off the only successful football coach that UConn has ever had and then proceeded to hire Pasquloni, then I might ask for my money back too.
