We currently have 14 known commitments and (at least) 17 scholarships avaliable. Due to attrition, academic qualifying, and the power of the grayshirt, if we oversign by a couple of players it would not be a problem. Below is a list of players who are (or have been reported to) still be considering cu. Its also likely that there are a couple of players the staff is recruting that we are not aware of (no one new who Will Oliver was when he committed). Those of you with subscriptions to premium websites probably have more insight into some of these players then I do, but from what ive been able to gather...

DE Juda Parker: Supposedly gave a "silent" commitment to the staff last weekend. Is a virtual lock.

RB Malcolm Creer: Unless he prefer Idaho St. to us he will be a Buff. Again a virtual lock.

CB Kyle Washington: Will visit this weekend, very likley to committ.

WR Devin Lucien: Will decide between cu, asu, ucla, and miami. I like our chances.

LB Leilon Willingham: Will decide between cu, michigain, asu, washington, and central florida. I would guess his choice will come down to cu and michigain.

WR/CB Brandon Andrews: Visiting but no offer. Seems like a backup plan if we need help at wr or cb. Most likely ours if we want him.

WR Jafus Gaines: Visiting this weekend. He is from Houston so i doubt he would decommit from UH. If he does decommit he will likely be a buff since he has not visited anywhere else.

OL Marcus Martin: Visitng this weekend. He has said that it is very unlikley that he would decommitt from usc but they may have to cut him loose if they lose their appeal. In that case he would probably decide between cu and arizona.

DL Stephan Nembot: Unclear if he is visiting or not. If he does, his decision would come down to us and washington(where he is currently committed).

DB Travis Feemey: Unclear if he is visiting or not. Currently committed to arizona and is also considering washington.

S/LB Will Harlos: Visiting this weekend. Has been committed to Wake Forest for almost a year so I doubt he suddenly changes his mind (not that we need more S or LB anyways).

Juda, Greer, Lucien makes 17. Take 1 or 2 more and look to greyshirt someone. Depending on the two you over sign you ask who you want to greyshirt. Hopefully we can take 19 and the extra 2 are Martin and Willingham. I like Washington as a fallback if we miss out on anyone. Still not sure why we aren't higher on M.Thomas the WR who is related to Keshawn Johnson.

M. Thomas has not gotten thru the NCAA clearinghouse for whatever reason. He is no longer being recruited by CU or anyone.

Nice summary in the opening post above.

I think we get Lucien, Parker, and Washington from that group. Maybe Nembot. Everyone else are back-ups in case these fall through

Lucien, Parker, Creer, Dembot, Willingham, Washington are on my wish list

oversign by 2, greyshirt maybe 2.

I would love to never hear the terms "Under the radar", "Silent Commitment", or "Soft Verbal" ever, ever again.

If the new staff makes early recruiting a bigger priority (and I think/hope they will), you will hear "soft verbal" a lot more.

Unless your CU.

You say that because of recent history. It seemed like we lost a lot of players that had originally committed to CU because we never had that many to begin with until December/January/February.

Nik's point is correct.

We'll see...Maybe next year we'll have 11-12 commits by december...

I want to be sure I understand this. Do you mean CU should take more commitments than it has scholarships? You mean get these kids to accept a full scholarship offer and forgo full scholarship opportunities at other schools, THEN ask them to sit out and pay their own way for a year?

I think CU is better than that. That's SEC stuff, not Pac-12 stuff. If I were a kid who this happened to, I'd tell the oversigning school to stuff it. I can see telling a kid up front that you want to greyshirt him, but, in that case, it seems like a kid you might not want so much anyway.

You are practicing wrong-thinking. Firstly, kids can count - they know what they're in for. Secondly, the idea is that we really have more schollies to give than the current number, due to attrition for various reasons. It's an accepted practice - schools want to cover their bases, and kids want to go to D1 schools.

So, do you mean you would ask the last commits in to greyshirt? What about a kid who orally committed earlier before the numbers became known and didn't set up a plan B school, then is asked to greyshirt?

My thinking is right. Is it really that important to give away every last scholarship to some 3-star players that you screw some other kid? Does it really matter that you have 85 scholarships out instead of 82 or 83? Sorry, but I hate that idea and I hope JE does, too.

Everyone knows what's going on, the kids too - don't just talk, listen...

You didn't answer my questions. And just because it's an "accepted practice" and "everyone knows what's going on" doesn't make it right. Oversigning to get some low-level player on the hook is greedy and self-serving without any real purpose. Next you'll tell me about CFB being a business. Good. Let's see the profit-sharing plan.

Typically you ask the kids to greyshirt and then they get a scholarship afterwards. These guys are usually project/athlete types who can come play on the big stage of the Pac 12 instead of going to the C-USA. It is typically there choice and I am sure they know in advance(most of the time) that they are being recruited to greyshirt or may be asked to based on other needs. I think this is probably happening this year based on the amount of 2 Star ATH's we are in on at the end.

I don't think anybody is saying that you promise kids a scholarship, then force them to grayshirt. What is being said is that the full scholarships will be there for more kids than there are scholarships for right now. Everybody seems to accept that there will be more attrition this spring, and those scholarships would go to the remaining kids from this class.

I disagree. See my other post. 90 percent of the time these guys are committing knowing they are going to have to wait to enroll late to greyshirt. Alot of kids need time for there body to develop so they can play at a high level anyways. In the end they are getting a quality education for free and the opportunity to become a diamond in the rough. Yes, maybe the could go to Tulane and get a scholarship right away and play as a Soph. but playing in Boulder might be worth waiting a half year to enroll.

Actually, we really don't disagree in this scenario, at least as to those 90%. If you tell a kid that he'll be greyshirting, or even that there is a good chance that he'll be greyshirting, then the kid can make his deal and accept what comes. So, that means Junction and I are not really at odds on this either.

My concern is where a kid is told that he will be getting a ride, then the HC decides to play the lottery on a kid who wants to choose a hat on NSD. HC hedges his bets by oversigning, wins the lottery and screws some other kid because he needs the room. A HC can avoid that by not playing the game and only dealing with kids who he trusts and who will commit earlier than NSD. Otherwise, the risks taken should not be shifted to some kid who had a schollie coming and who will have difficulty finding another place to go.

I'm a firm believer that the NCAA should abolish oversigning or at least put a hard limit on it. Then the playing field will be level and the Nick Sabans of the CFB world won't be taking 23 commits against a recruiting budget of 13. The story out of LSU last year, where a kid was asked to greyshirt AFTER he moved into the school was reprehensible.

JMO. Go Buffs!

Edit: BTW, my understanding of greyshirting means the kid pays his way that year. So, he isn't really "getting a quality education for free." That cost can be quite a burden for some kids.

Actually, I did answer your questions, and you couldn't be more wrong. Two sides with something to gain come together and make an agreement - that's what makes the world go 'round. In this case, it's coaches and prospective student-athletes. That means that kids in whatever situation you want to make up know what the score is, accept an offer under those circumstances, and that does make it right. Who are you to say they shouldn't accept a scholarship offer they want?

I say he SHOULD accept the scholarship offer he wants AND be able to rely on it. It's only fair if the offer comes with a warning that greyshirting might be part of it. Otherwise, this agreement process you describe is one-sided in favor of the over-offering school.

Actually, under your scenario, and to keep things equal on both sides, the kids should "over-commit". Just quietly commit to 3 or 4 schools and then screw 3 of them in the end just to cover his bases. Same thing, no? How would that work out? If every kid did that, it would be chaos.

You also have to plan for the fact that virtually every year a team loses a few players for completely unexpected (or sometimes expected) reasons. You have kids who just don't make it in the classroom despite all the academic support available to them, you have kids who get homesick or decide that a girlfriend someplace else is better than a schollie where they are at, you get kids who make stupid kid mistakes and get tossed out of school for legal or other violations. You also get kids who decide after playing football since they were 7-8 years old that the game just isn't fun anymore, especially since they are third string as a jr. and two more kids are coming in at their position and just quit.

Some of this stuff the coaches can have a pretty good indication of, other stuff comes out of the blue. It is not unreasonable for a program to plan for a couple of these spots to come open just like an airline plans to have one or two ticketholders miss a flight. Every once in a while everyone shows up and they have to scramble to figure out who doesn't get on the plane but more often somebody gets to fly in a seat that would have been empty, same concept applies to a football team.
