Oversigning revisted

Oversigning revisited

Last week I hijacked a thread with my objections to the practice of oversigning: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread....l-NSD...Breakdown-of-where-we-stand..../page2

I apologize for the hijack and will try not to do that again. But, now that we're past NSD, the issue seems to be getting hotter and warrants new discussion. I grant that those who clarified the issue of oversigning and grayshirting as far as CU is concerned were mostly right. It doesn't look like CU oversigned anyway and, even if it did, I fully believe the attrition that will make room for it will be natural.

On the national front, however, I am much more concerned for kids who get caught up in the SEC oversigning machine and what appears to be unnatural or forced attrition. Here's a column that got my attention today: http://the-ozone.net/football/2011/weekthatwas_11_02_04.html

It contains several links to stories on coaches with differing attitudes on oversigning. This gives me one more reason to dislike Nick Saban. Not only does he engage in the practice to ridiculous levels, he is disingenuous about it. You won't tell us how many kids you have on scholarship at your PUBLIC university, Nick? Really?

Now that recruiting has quieted and we have 6 months until the next season, it seems like a good time to talk about it. I guess my feelings are clear. Your thoughts?

1. Never apologize for a threadjack on Allbuffs. Own it, and stare anybody who questions your motives directly in the eye and accuse their mother of sexual promiscuity.

2. I tended to agree with your points in that thread. Your argument was about something larger than CU's class. NCAA is all about protecting student athletes, but they look away in these ridiculous scenarios where kids are sold a dream and then cast adrift. It would be nice if there was some sort of standardized limit which recognized the reality of attrition but also respected the plight of those victims of oversigned classes.

I think we oversigned by one. At least that is what I was able to figure based on the information provided by Plati. I don't know if any of the scholarship players on the roster for spring were walk-ons given 1 year deals. I suppose by the time spring is done we will probably lose one or two either to injury academics, in the past we have lost more.

Don't feel bad for the kids in SEC or USC country being "victims" as they are most likely being paid for their services anyway; regardless of being on official "scholarship".

Florida, Bama, and most of the bigger SEC schools have the entire athletic department including a vast majority of the coaches salary paid by independent funds controlled by the boosters.

The world of college recruiting, with or without oversigning, can be a pretty shady place. While you have to acknowledge that these adults are foul for some of their actions, the student athletes generally have information about what other guys are being recruited and have to understand that things could go awry. So there is a little bit of caveat emptor involved in the process for the recruits and their families.

Do you have proof of that or is it just off the top of your head?

In this day and age....do YOU REALLY, REALLY, think schools can get away with "paying" recruits? REALLY?!

Silly.
