Don't write off Ted Miller quite yet...

I've found him to be pretty even handed and fair in his coverage of the Pac-12. Saw this in his chat today and thought you guys might be interested:

Scott (Sunny Seattle)
Ted whats the deal with Colorado? Honestly, how many wins can a team like that muster in the Pac this year? Also, how many years will it be (if ever) before that can compete at a high level again?

Ted Miller (3:04 PM)
I think Colorado will be "competitive" immediately. They showed sparks in 2010 and did win 5 games, beating teams like Georgia and Kansas State. Also, they had some injury issues at QB and in the secondary... my initial impression of Embree is positive. Of course, to get to the top, he's going to have to upgrade the talent (speed) across the board. That could take a couple of years. But I don't expect to see the Buffs losing 9 or 10 games...I'm more in line with them trying to perk up from a starting point of .500.

Pretty even headed. Impressive to see a media member not dissing Embree out of hand.

Scott can **** himself its not like we went 0-12.

Damn straight. I will fix it for you. Sure fire anger over the whupping we gave his team on signing day.

Ted whats the deal with my sex life? Honestly, how many girls can a guy like me muster in the Pac this year? Also, how many years will it be (if ever) before I can get laid again?

Scott's just being a typical Puppy Whiner - he's pissed we got 3 recruits from them so he attempting weak smack. They were like this back in 99-00 whatever when Ricky was there. Now we get to experience it all the time being in the same conference.

I know this used to be reserved for KjSU but in my mind it's officially transferred. I can't wait to watch us beat these PURPLE PUSSIES next year!

The funny thing is...didn't the puppies win a grand total of one more regular season game than we did last year? We would have tied their record if not for Hawkins epic misfire at Kansas. On their boards UW fans act like they are soooo much further along in their rebuilding process...when in reality the difference seemed be 1 game and getting to a bowl. I'll only give them half-credit for the bowl win against NU since it was a rematch against an NU team that was in melt-down mode and thought they "deserved" a much better bowl.

I watched Ted Millers video of the Buffs on e s pee in and I felt he was fair in his pre season assessment. He also left me with the impression that they had a shot at being a 500 team this year.

Favorite Quote of his analysis on our lack of pass defense
But here's the punchline: Both departed cornerbacks, Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown, are top NFL prospects. Go figure.
I was slightly disturbed about this and then I remembered we had D. Hawkins. We were ranked 112 in the nation pass defense. Lets hope for some big changes in this area for the next season.

This had more to do with losing at least one starter in the secondary per game for like 4 weeks in a row.

had anyone written him off?

There was a thread where he was lumped in with the SEC-fellating ESPN cabal. (I dont' think they used those words but that was the gist).

I think he does a good job with the PAC blog so I wanted to show an example of what I thought was pretty even handed coverage.

Terrible loss, but don't ever underestimate the importance of that game. It accelerated D2's departure and instantly reinvigorated a hurting fan base.

UW is just pissed that it only took 13 days for us to steal 3 of their recruits.

Ok so the truth is, yes we were really bad under Hawkins, Really really bad, and if he were the coach this season, I'd be resigned to beating the lambs at Invesco and losing the rest

But Hawk is gone and the rest of the yahoo's that think we are going to continue the losing trend have 5-year tunnel vision

sounds like nobody is going to take us seriously, thats good, wait till gameday when you get socked by a bienemy coached offense

the question is, how much time and how many wins until we do get on the other teams radar

I bet UW still won't take us seriously even if we go in there sporting a 4-1 record, dog meat, yum

I started reading miller last year and he is fair and does write about every school in the pac not just the big boys of the conference.

We did have a pretty rough year by any measure, and we all know about the lack of leadership on the sidelines. But all that being said and I realize this is a huge but. We were one epic almost unheard of collapse (kansas) away from being 6 and 6 and playing Syracuse in the Pinstrip bowl. A bowl, as a former Upstate New Yorker and Syracuse season ticket holder that we would have won. So I think it is a fair assesment of our squad and things will only get better quicker with someone on the sidelines with half a brain.

He has a good post up on embree and his love for colorado football today.
It's a great post for the most part, with some more info about Hawk's regime that makes you ill. Like this:

"If you asked the players, 'What are the three plays we're going to run on offense if we have to get a first down?' They couldn't name one," Embree said. "The way we practice. The way we train. We had no identity. We just kind of showed up and played."

Traditions were lost. Players were griping. "A lot of guys didn't feel like it was true competition, that jobs were kind of given to guys," Embree said. The culture was negative.

I was watching the NFL Network show on the '66 Packers (the series on each Super Bowl winner), and Lombardi was in front of a chalkboard talking about the famous Packers sweep. Lombardi said something to the effect of: "This is our most important play. We are going to run this play over and over and over, and we are going to be successful when we do it." Compare that to Hawkins saying something probably like "We're going to run some different groups out there and we're going to run some different guys out there and change things up a bit and keep at it and eventually it's going to pop."

The rest of the yahoo's just don't have Black & Gold colored glasses on. I think Embree and EB are great hires and I'm excited for the future of Buff football, but there really is no reason for people outside the program to expect things to suddenly change. On paper, the hire seems like a reach. Recent history says we aren't going anywhere quickly.

Fact is that Colorado is going to have to prove that things are looking better. Nobody is going to pat us on the head based on what's happened so far.

I for one still need to see the coaching bear fruit. Due to Hawkins' sub 3 star classes, we are behind the 8-ball talent-wise, at least to compete with the middle to top teams in the conference. Embree is implementing a new system without his guys to run it, and it remains to be seen how successful he will be, especially in year one. Throw in the tough schedule next year, and all I'm really looking for is improvement and fire, not a bowl game. If he coaches lights out and we get to a bowl game, the nation, not just the conference, had better watch out in the future.
