My impression of Ricardo when he was at CU:
Good man
Set a great example for his players as to how to behave (and disciplined those who didn't comply)
Stressed academics along with basketball
Very good recruiter ...
However ... one of the WORST gameday coaches (particularly in crunch time) I have ever seen.
Ricardo should find himself a position as an assistant in a big time program and do a lot more more learning as to what a HC position requires.
I wish him the best.

the mysterious thing about Ricardo was how his early teams had great intensity on D, his later teams were terrible and simply did not rebound on either end.

he's had a nice career (avg'ing about 10 a game) and played on 2 pretty good UTEP teams.
Yes, I think he has used up his eligibility.

I agree that he's a good man. I think all of us agree that he was a good person, decent recruiter, horrible coach, and needed to go in spite of his contributions to the program.
However...you thought he'd do well at NIU? Just curious...why did you think that? I thought he was going to do horrible there...and I think he'll do horrible anywhere else. I think he can be a decent 2nd assistant on a good college program, but his basketball knowledge and coaching are so horrible...it's ridiculous...

I for one thought Patton would do well at NIU, not because he's a good coach (he isn't) but because if he could recruit kids from places like Tennessee to Boulder, surely he could recruit really good players from Chicago to Des Plaines. (Is that where it is?)
Patton was burned out when he left here. We saw the result of his poor coaching pedigree the longer he was here, and it just got worse over time. As pointed out above, the defensive intensity wasn't there after about 5 years, then he got grumpy, then he pretty much just didn't want to be here anymore. I was actually surprised he took the job at NIU.
As for the suggestion he should take an assistant's job at some high profile program - that's exactly what he should do, but he won't unless he has no other options. He has a lot of pride, and I'm not sure he would allow himself to do that.

Only because talent wins. Between the high profile transfers he was bringing and the success he was likely to have on the recruiting trail, I thought he'd be able to quickly have one of the most talented teams in the MAC (especially given the recruiting location).

I don't think making your kids sleep in the gym or walk back to the hotel are the sign of a good man. Especially when you have not held up you're end of the bargain.

Yeah, that. Every experience I ever had around him he was a total dick, completely full of himself. and he was a lousy basketball coach. His kids seemed like good people though, one of them played with my cousin at Boulder High and always heard positive things about them.

i think Rico's rep as "mister integrity" took a big hit in the largely forgotten ball-throwing incident in the NIT. coach ain't supposed to throw a ball into the stands.

Ricardo was an average coach who stuck around about 4 years too long. Thank Dick Tharp for that.

Patton's lame duck year really hurt the program, but not his fault.
^^^^ This. He put us back on the map. He struggled but after Harrington he was an upgrade. I hope he lands somewhere and does well. He lifted us out of face down in the gutter
