OU fires Jeff Capel

I still think Capel's a good coach with a solid future. He's a good recruiter. I wonder, though, if the jump from VCU to Oklahoma was too much too fast. Especially considering that he has no connections to the university or region (at least that I'm aware of).

I am sort of surprised by this move, and sort of not surprised.

Surprised -- it was just a couple years ago that this team had Blake Griffin and was in the elite 8. That year Capel hauled in an absolutely amazing recruiting class. The team for 2009/2010 was absolutely loaded.

Not surprised -- For as loaded as the 2009 / 2010 team was (all Capel's recruits) they completely flopped. Attitude problems everywhere. The attendance this season dropped to absolutely nothing. I bet they had a few games of less than 2,000 people in attendance. Add to that the fact that there are rumors of NCAA sanctions coming -- it didn't really surprise me to see them decide to fire him.

It will be interesting to see where OU goes. Using a historical model only - the new Big 12 (-2) is a tougher conference than the old version. In addition to the current slate of 2-games against OSU, Texas, and Texas A&M - now OU has to play Kansas twice, Kansas State twice, and Mizzou twice. Gone are Colorado (historically that game has favored OU) and Nebraska (also historically OU).

Capel was the current AD's hire. Frankly, I am a little bit surprised the Joe Castiglione has managed to stay so clean re: OU's men's basketball program. Kelvin Sampson didn't follow the rules very well, and Capel showed he couldn't either - but somehow neither one of them reflected on Castiglione.

I was willing to say I thought he did a really good job from what he had at the begining of the year. I saw them as being the worst team in the Big 12 hands down, and they seemed to prove they were not, even with losing all their talent. But with that said, OU looks at being a national contender just about every year, and with Capel they were not.

Been hearing rumors of OU preparing an offer to Bill Self for $5 million. Anyone else heard this?

current Kansas coach and OK State grad going to OU. would seem improbable. with Arkansas and Tech hiring at the same time, not sure who the top regional candidates are....but it's a sellers market.

I was gonna say that Bill Self's ties are to OSU, not OU. Just do not see Self having much interest in that job.

Not to mention his contract. The buyout on that thing must be pretty big ($3 million per year through 2018).

I do think OU will go after a more established coach this time. Someone with experience in a Big 6 conference or elite mid-major like Mark Few.

i wonder if cutting ties with Capel is in advance of NCAA problems that are not yet public (but tied to the Gallon kid).

I dunno. It seems like it would be a little harder to attract coaching candidates if you have the gestapo camped in your back yard. That said, I don't think they'll get hammered because of the Gallon incident -- more like another violent wrist slapping.

And the "Bill Self to OU" rumors are pure myth. Not happening.

I think one of the reasons they had to hire Capel in the first place were the NCAA sanctions coming down from Kelvin Sampson's cell phone problems.

No argument here. The boomers needed someone who was seen as squeaky-clean. What better candidate than a mid-major coach, from the Dook tree, who had built a competitive program without "rumors".

I wonder if they'll travel this road, again?

no one was going to win with that team he had last year. sure, that's his own doing....but, Capel is going to be a pretty connected guy through Duke/Coach K and his dad. so, that's going to generate some anti-OU feeling among the "brotherhood" of coaches, at least an influential group of it. also, by firing Capel, you cut your direct link to Blake Griffin...which has to be a legit pull for recruiting. they were bad, sure. however, seems to me, an awful lot of downside here when they had some young talent and imo Capel winning 5 league games was far better than i thought they'd do. for a while, i thought winless was possible. they weren't even playing close games for a while, losing by 15 everynight. losing to Chaminade.

that makes me speculate the NCAA might be in OU's future.
