Don't know...three sweet home games, building the program for the future, ESPN live coverage....debatable.
From a standpoint of money, national respect, recruiting, prestige and some other reasons the tourney.
From a standpoint of helping develop a program that has been in the doldrums into a quality contender to win some tourney games in the future the NIT.
Still not quite the same experience as being on national TV six wins from the big title but this NIT will help this team in the future.

NIT. Our young guns are getting tons of practice time. The fans got 3 extra home games. And everyone gets a game or two in the final four in NY's MSG. Recruiting should see a boost as well, since our name is still being mentioned on natl TV.
Oh, and Dooky V, we did deserve to be in the ncaa tourney. The Buffs just proved it, on the court.

Seriously ... some of you think it would be better to make the NCAA and get blown out in the first round as opposed to winning the NIT (which if you haven't been paying attention, actually has some pretty strong teams in it)? :huh:

Yeah ... I wish we had been picked for the Big Dance ... and think we'd earned it. But looking back, a team we beat 3 times and was a legitimate 5th seed in the NCAA didn't make it past the second round. We have a chance to win a farking CHAMPIONSHIP!

make no mistake, i am enjoying this. but would have enjoyed making the tourney for one game much more.
And you know that HOW???
What kind of seed would we have gotten ... maybe a 12 or 13? At best?
Doesn't mean we couldn't have made a good showing ... but the more likely outcome is we would have been eliminated in the first round ... those are the odds.
Guess what .. we're still playing basketball and further justifying the argument that we belonged in the Big Dance. Yeah ... I would have preferred that we had been actually picked for it ...but given that we weren't, I'll take an NIT championship over a first round exit in the NCAA any day of the week.
Wouldn't have been a 13. Somewhere between 9 and 12. We would have been underdogs unless it was the play-in game. Depending on the matchup, we could have been eliminated in the play-in or in the Sweet 16. I would have taken my chances.

I just don't understand how winning the NIT is remotely close to getting an NCAA bid. That's what you play the season for - for a chance to play in the Mens Basketball Championship series. Not to win the NIT. This is a great run for the Buffs, and it's great to see the seniors extend their careers. Three home games are nice, as well as ESPN coverage.
However, I will bet that the television ratings for tonight's game are nothing like the ratings for the first round games. Telling a recruit that you made it to the tournament is a lot better than, "hey, we made it to the semifinals (at the very least) of the NIT." NIT is a small puppy compared to the big dog that the NCAA is. The NIT is fun, but it's nowhere close to as respected.
And no, I don't see the extra practice time at the end of the year really being that beneficial for these teams. You have a whole summer off, and what you then is what's important...not two more weeks of practice, especially considering that many of the team will not be around next season.

The NIT is giving this program some momentum. But if we'd gone to the NCAA and done what VCU is doing, which we definitely could have done, the NCAA would have been better hands down. We just don't know. Also, one thing to think about, we got a lot of pub by getting snubbed by the NCAA. Much more that we'd have gotten by getting in and going one and out. So, by getting snubbed by the ncaa and winning in the NIT, we get a bit of extra publicity.

So dmd, by this reasoning, fb teams gain nothing by going to a bowl game. The seniors get a little more time on the hardwood -- few will see competitive bball after their last year. The youngsters -- the ones returning next year -- get all those extra practices, and in many instances, PT in a competitive tournamnent. There is no "down" here. We will be a better team next year because of this extended run in the "other" tourney.
I really like the momentum comment. And when this run ends, whenever that is, the younger players are gonna be eager and hungry. They're gonna want more. I would bet they will feel like they can't wait to get back at it. I like that angle.

RedDirt - I think football and bball are completely different. For football, every play starts out as a set play. You have a full playbook on both sides of the ball, and there are many players for limited time on the field. So yes, I do think a football bowl game is beneficial from both a practice standpoint and an award to the seniors.
For basketball, I think it's different. There are very few SET plays. There are some inbounds plays, and some half court plays. However, for the most part you have a defensive philosophy and offensive set. Your players then work within the system to perform, and no, I don't think extra practice as beneficial to a bball program as it would be for football.

I'll just chime in that I think extra game time (especially in tournament play) is incredibly valuable to the younger players. Because there are no set plays to memorize or practice - experience becomes critical in the maturity of players. Playing through a game like tonight's where injuries and illness limited the effectivness of the go to guys, everyone had to contribute.
Sure, summer will go by, but when these guys return to the game next year they will know what it took when they were asked to shoulder a larger part pf the load, and will be better prepared to step into those roles day to day.
I 100% agree that the players would have wanted to go dancing, (would we want them if they didn't want to compete at the highest level?) but I believe that the CU program needed to go to the NIT, so that this can be the start of an era of success, rather than a season culminating in a one shot apperance in the NCAAs. I also agree that on the whole getting to compete in the NCAA Tourney is better than running through the NIT, but for this team, and the state of this program this year, the NIT is just a better circumstance.
Let's just not make a habit of it!

I know this the same way as all of you who are presenting the choice as winning in the NIT or getting blown out in the big dance know that we would have been blown out, even though there is absolutely nothing to indicate that's what would have happened.

We went through this whole debate during the Big XII tourney and I see both sides, but this contention - that the NIT winner is the 69th best team in the country - is BS.
In terms of the present, for the seniors: NCAA
In terms of the future and the longer term program: Winning the NIT

For this program, this needs to be a stepping stone year. We almost made it last year, we made a final four NIT run this year (with a possible championship pending) and so next year and for years to come we need to be contending for an NCAA tournament with the NIT being a fallback.

DMD -- everyone, including me, wants to see the Buffs with an ncaa tourney seed# next to the name. I was pissed when it didn't happen this year, and I'm glad the Buffs are making the best of this situation.
There are various things the staff can work on with the young guns, not just set plays, etc. There may be techniques that one or more of the players have struggled grasping, and this extended run gives the staff time to re-teach or reinforce. It could be something as simple as teaching a young C/PF a new low post move, or a wing player a new defensive technique. This time is invaluable since the staff can get these "added" lessons in now instead of the summer (I think?) when the staff can have contact with the team again.
This is gonna pay dividends down the road. But has got to be a one time deal.

NCAA Tourney, no doubt. There's a reason it gets referred to as the "Not Invited Tournament", and it's because that's exactly what this tournament is - a distant 2nd fiddle to the NCAA Tourney. But that aside, this NIT run is great and it's nice to see that the team didn't get down and lose in the early rounds after being snubbed. A 1st-round loss in the NIT would've just given more people fodder for saying that we didn't deserve an NCAA bid, even though our performance in the NIT has nothing to do with the fact that we were deserving of a bid.
Probably the best thing about this NIT run combined with the snub is a point which DBT already touched on, which is that we got a ton of publicity for a day or 2 after the selection show, and now we've gotten 2 games on national TV and at least 1 more, and hopefully 2 more.

While I think it would have been fantastic to get an NCAA tournament invitation - this situation has been terrific for Colorado. Three home games. Plenty of great exposure and great revenue. Last night crowd - while the school is out on spring break - was fantastic.
There should be a lot of momentum to build on for next year.

I would take a NIT Championship over winning one game in the NCAA tourney, two wins in the tourney maybe, and would rather win 3 tourney games than the NIT. But we never know how a team is going to do in advance, so I'd always rather get selected to the big dance.
