Have players gotten better under Boyle?

To me, the number one indicator of a coaches ability is how his/her players improve. So, you bball experts, have the Buff players improved under Tad? It seems to me that under Ricardo they stayed the same or regressed. From my uneducated viewpoint, CU's guys have almost all improved throughout the year.

Without a doubt. Not only that, but if you watch UNC play (which, let's face it, is still pretty much Tad's team), you will see a team that has incredible fundamentals. I think Boyle's teaching ability has been the thing I've been most impressed with this season.

Absolutely. Not just from last season to this one with guys like Knutson. But over the course of this season guys like Roberson have blossomed. Beyond that, the improvement in how well all the guys play situational basketball, defend properly, move on offense, etc. is night and day. And maybe most importantly, the individual technique stuff like how to defend the pick and roll, jump stop to avoid charges, catch in a good shooting position, etc. has continually improved as the season has progressed. I could go on and on.

Bottom line is that Boyle teaches winning basketball and the players listen to him. We got ourselves a good one.

It also helps that Boyle is playing a system that matches the talents on the team....whereas Coach Bz would play his system no matter what, despite the fact that it diminished the ability for our players to truly excel in certain aspects of the game.

In general I agree with you, but last night's pick and roll defense was pretty terrible...

I agree. But I don't think it was mental. Guys were all a step slow with the flu. They were defending it right, they were just getting killed because the rotations weren't getting to their spots in time. Think about this: Dre wasn't blocking shots as a weakside help defender.

last nights insistence on playing the 2-3 zone and not going small until the end perplexed me.

Troo. Dre was often over extended on the show and just didn't get back in position on the roll to make a play. We didn't have anyone on the weak side big enough to do anything to help (usually it was Relphorde).

Did anyone else catch Boyle after the game? He ran over to the student section and gave a full body fist pump to them with a yell to go with it. Great to see.

He has done that a lot this season, i love it, its awesome.

i agree with the premise. HOWEVER, let's not be too quick to say that UNC is still Tad's team and that this is a team that has been coached up by Tad. kind of illogical. i'm mixed on the BZ era and leaning negative, but if we are giving Tad the love....UNC's current coach deserves some as well in principle.

i think Tad has done an excellent job of letting this team play basketball to its strengths. not only giving AB the ball and Higgins freedom as well (vs. BZ)....but the evolution of Levi's dribble penetration and jump stop game in addition to bombing the 3....i don't think we see that with Jeff. with Jeff, remember Rich Roby (a pretty good scorer in his own right) was avg'ing 12-13 shots a game as a senior....AB has really become "the man"....and you can't do that taking 12 shots a game.

these guys are playing basketball, under Jeff they were always trying to execute.

Yes, absolutely Tad has coached great. I think our picks sort of suck at times, but overall, I love how the team has played.

...but this is one season, so I think we need to give it a few years before we know how good of a teacher he is.

I didn't mean to take anything away from either UNC's coach or Bzzz. I'm a huge Bzzz fan, but I honestly think this year's CU team is stronger in the fundamentals than last year's was. It could be experience as well as coaching, but I think that this year's team is better overall. As for UNC, I used that as an example to show how Boyle stressed the fundamentals -- nothing more.

Yes. You just gotta look at the record from last year to this year. Boyle got the most out of Knutson this year which helped them get those extra 8 (so far) wins. Boyle is building something special here, as others have said.

You have to give Buzz some credit. When he took over this team they lacked disipline and didn't work or play hard. It was almost comical how they ignored Ricardo in huddles and I was told by a player that practices were not much better.

Under Buzz they became disiplined, they worked hard, they worked together, they payed attention to the fundamentals. What they didn't do was use all that and at the same time go out and create things on the floor. Buzz did manage to turn the program around and we should give him credit for that.

Boyle has added on to what Buzz did. He has improved fundamentals, both individual and team. At the same time he has gone beyond what Buzz did with a system that everyone had to conform to and put a team on the floor that can use their individual talents within the framework of the team to accomplish more. He is able and willing to adjust the system to fit the talents of the players he has. The example given earlier of Levi is a good one, what he has accomplished with Dufault and Roberson as the season progressed are also examples of this.

Under Ricardo the players were just out there doing their thing almost like rec ball. Under Buzz the players ran the system like parts to a machine.

Under Boyle the players a playing the game but with a common purpose. More fun for the players, more fun for the fans, and eventually it will result in more wins for the program.

I actually thought last night;s entire game was terrible for the Buffs.... Burks was sick and I think it reverberated throughout the entire team. I felt like we were a little lucky that Kent St. had no idea what defense stands for.....

Didn't we, one of the smallest teams in the conference, finish third in rebounding? I think we did. That says a lot.

The reason I brought this up goes back to the coaching change and AB's decision to stay. I think that under Tad his NBA stock has gone up. If that is true, I hope that recruit's perception of Tad will be that he will make them the best they can be.

I was thinking about this last night. I've had the chance to see only a handful of Buff games this year, and some of my opinion is based on media reports and AB'ers observations. There were post-game threads where the team and/or players were noted, for instance: Relaphorde making mistakes a senior shouldn't make, Dufault myteriously disappearing, Sharpe playing out of control, and team defense or offensive plays/sets being less than stellar.

Last night, I saw virtually none of this (except some questionable D), and some of the good points were validated when I looked at the box score. I didn't remember Sharpe being out of control, and the box showed him with 0 turnovers. I didn't see Relaphorde get any charging or traveling calls -- I did see him come up with a huge rebound and FT's late in the game. Although he didn't get alot of glamor chances, Dufault was there battling and trying to do the little things (screens, and such). I saw Levi take it to the hoop -- critical for a 3-point marksman to keep the D honest. Guess what? These changes are part maturity and part coaching.

I saw good things last night that I don't remember seeing in the mizzery and okie lite games. Things have changed.

I know we have debated the Bzz vs boyle thing a lot. I will admit I am not a Bzz fan (even before he jumped ship), and I am a big Boyle fan. But credit has to be giving where its due. Boyle wouldnt have been anywhere nearly as sucessful if it wasnt for Bzz, and I am not talking about the players he recruited, but more the culture he produced. Patton (who I am even less of a fan of) didnt have any control over the team, nor the program. Bzz came in, and for the most part set up Boyle. I think at this time Boyle is a much better coach for the team, and will take us a lot further, but Bzz at the time was the right guy.

Yeah, good points. Bzz was more of a "name" than previous coaches. He has a huge ego which he used to kind of turn around the institutional mentality regarding basketball. But his ego is also why he isn't here anymore. He still viewed CU as a second tier program and he wanted the big time and bright lights. He is a super douche. So, Jeff, thanks for what you did for us. Enjoy the big time. While you can.

I dont know if it was Boyle, but someone somewhere coached the **** out of Roberson, that kid is almost never in the wrong spot for a board, play on the ball, you name it.

Look at the article on Roberson in the Denver Post, it was in on Monday or Tuesday. He spent time with his dad from the age of 8 watching tapes of Dennis Rodman rebounding. Instinct is something he worked on and developed, want to is a huge part of it, also helps that he is long and a very quick leaper.

Bottom line is that he has an attitude for rebounding and like a lot of things attitude combined with talent will take you far.

I hope younger sis Arielle was watching those Rodman rebounding tapes with Andre.

BeBE, what level of impact will we see from her next year?
First my disclaimer ... I have no association with the BB programs other than as a fan of both so this is strictly my non-insiders opinion.

The WBB program loses a lot in all-time leading scorer Brittany Spears. She also is way up top in most all other record book categories. She's very good from the perimiter or on the drive to the basket. She has been the primary target that Chucky Jeffrey looks to pass to. She's most often first or second on the team in rebounds, behind Chucky. She also helps a lot with defending the posts like Baylor's Griner. That's a lot to replace, along with the contributions of the other senior on the wing, Chelsea Dale.

While the team needs depth in all positions and serious help in the post, the biggest loss will be on the wing, at the 3 or 4 that these women play. That is probably Roberson's best area. She seems to me to be, at this point, the 2011 freshman most likely to be able to make an immediate impact in that area. She has been a very good rebounder in high school, averaging just under 10 rpg in her senior year, along with her 19+ ppg average. I expect to see her playing significant minutes as a freshman and hopefully being at least a 10 ppg / 5 rpg player by conference time.

Here's what her club coach, a former star player and assistant coach at Texas WBB has to say about her (quote from ESPN HoopGurlz clip on Arielle's verbal to CU): "Arielle is a long, athletic, versatile player with an extremely high basketball IQ who uses her right and left hand to finish in the paint," Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil, her TeamXpress club team coach, said. "In addition, she can knock down three and the mid-range jumper on a consistent basis. Her ability to play multiple positions on offense and defense will be an asset in Coach Lappe's system."

I definitely think the players have gotten better as the year has gone on. New coach and a new system = a learning curve. But CU, despite some inconsistency, has improved as the year has gone on. I think Boyle is a very good coach but like I have said in other threads, I will be interested to see how he handles the next couple of years when alot of the talent that was recruited by the previous coach is gone.
