Buffs Shock Cowgirls, Advance To WNIT Quarterfinals

Wyoming drew 8,000 fans for this one? Damn. Previous high was under 5k for the season, but this just shows what women's basketball could do on the front range if we can build a Top 25 program.

Generally agree....but once again....have you been to Laramie? Not much to do there.....

True. But there also drawing on a much smaller resident population and an enrollment that's about half of CU's.

In Laramie...attend a school function, or go back to your residence and drink yourself to sleep......not much else to do. Sounds like ****ing Lincoln.

Both the university and the community support their WBB team in Laramie. A few years ago they won the WNIT and, for the final game, they SOLD OUT their 15K+ arena. I was up there last night (2 buses plus some folks who drove) and it was very impressive to see that level of support for their team. Back when CU WBB was near the top of the game, we also had that level of support. I hope it returns as the team gets better. Adecent crowd on Sunday, for the re-match with future Pac 12 opponent USC, would be a nice start.

We were a small part of the crowd last night and most of us were sitting in the section behind the CU bench but up in the rafters (rows in the 30's). But we made our presence heard. When the game ended, after the players huddled up by the bench, they then all turned towards us and started waving to us and they kept it up until they left the court. Both Mike Bohn and Coach Lappe came out to the buses to thank us for coming and supporting the team. Coach also said that they could definitely hear us down on the court.

Was BG actually in Laramie?

Based on the quotes from coach and players in his article, I would say yes he was in Laramie. He has a number of quotes in his article that are not in the "Quotes" piece on the Buffs web site. There were a number of CU staff there, along with about 100 or so CU fans, so it's perfectly reasonable that he went with some of the staff.

When CU was winning under Ceal the women got some decent crowds. Average attendance was substantially higher than it has been recently. They also got a lot of positive attention in the Denver media, both print and broadcast.

Colorado historically has turned out some very good womens players. If the program can build back up to a point where the majority of these players want to stay home it will help put the program into a situation where it can have continued success. This will result in more positive attention and most importantly bigger crowds.

Men's BB has made a significant jump in the past couple of years in terms of revenue. A successful women's program will not generate the kind of revenue that a successful men's program will but even an increased average attendance of 1500 would put the program on the way towards at least paying for itself. With the men making some money and the women not costing the AD as much money (potentially even coming close to breaking even) the entire athletic program at CU would benefit. Another potential positive is that with greater attention and attendance at women's BB games would come an increased interest overall in women's athletics. This could translate into higher attendance at volleyball as well (especially if again a quality product is on the floor.) An increase in average attendance for volleyball of even a few hundred would make a big dent in that budget as well.

CU used to be a consistent top 15 women's BB program with a number of top 5 rankings and a couple of elite 8/final 4 appearances. There is no reason that with the right coach and quality support this program can't be a top 25 program again.
