It's only been one year. It was a good year. He's shown himself to be a good coach who "gets" Colorado (the university and the state). We've liked our recruiting. We've liked our style of play. It seems to be working and his name is starting to surface with the most prestigious coaching vacancies - at least in the media.

But, it's only been one year.

We have been bitten in the recent past by extending coaches at the first signs of success (Hawkins and KMM). Those mistakes were costly mistakes in every way, from finances to win/loss record to the national perception of our programs.

So, what do we do with Boyle?

Option A: Nothing. Make him show it for another year or two.

Option B: Lock him up long-term. Past mistakes can't make you gun shy.

Option C: 1-year extension. Replace the year served on his contract with an extra year plus a raise based on the performance this season.

I think an extension / higher rate of pay are certainly due.

That being said, I would make sure that the new deal includes a hefty buyout penalty if Boyle wants to leave, while keeping CU's early termination fee to a minimum.

While going back to RP is tempting, I'll have to go with the 1-yr extension plus raise. Boyle has earned the raise if through nothing other than putting butts in seats, but I can imagine that Bohn is a little gun-shy about extending coaches after the Hawk disaster.

tough to get one without the other.

1 year extension with some bonus sounds good. Initially I was thinking nothing, given our huge mistake with Hawkins, but had we just done a 1 year extension in his case we wouldn't have had the mess we ended up with. It shows our committment to the program and Boyle which I think can't hurt with recruiting.

Nothing yet. Dude just started. I love the guy and think he may be the answer but gotta give it at least one more year.

The real problem will be when other teams seriously start calling - which I think could happen this year.

Whether he ultimately gets job offers or not, if other schools are contacting Boyle and talking about big dollars, CU will have to respond with something, or he will be out the door.

I like the 1 year extension bonus concept...knowing MB, he will probably give Tad a five year extension with a buyout clause that would make Texas blush and a key to the AD's washroom.

And Visions of Hawkins Danced Through My Head.......

Not saying Boyle has anything in common with that other guy....but the truth of the matter is, yes he did a great job with the team he was given, but there are still a whole lot of ??? that only time could answer.

I think he can prove that with another positive showing next year where he may not possibly have an NBA lottery pick on his squad (a guy that he also never recruited)....Can't take anything away from what he's done with the talent he's been given, but he's yet to prove he can bring in the same kind of talent and sustain what we've got going in the future.

Definitely would like him to prove himself for another year before throwing money at him now. We can throw that much more $$$ at him a year from now if the success has continued and there is more data to support it continuing in the future.

nothing. 1 year extension could be ok, but nothing is best. lets see him do well without burks and higgins.

Nothing yet except maybe pepper contract with some bigger incentive bonuses. Lets give him at least 3 yrs before we extend him. I have a really good feeling here but no need to do a Hawk all over again. Lets see what he can do with his players once Alec, Cory and Levi are all gone. I like the recruiting and the increased rebounding and defense. Bob Knight really liked what he saw when they were playing KU in the tournament and made several references to how we have a well coached team so I think we are in really good shape here. 2 more good seasons and I say lock him up long term.

The only thing that should be done is if he receives serious offers from other schools his compensation should be increased to a more competitive level. Otherwise, give him another year to prove something. He has a hell of a challenge in the NIT coming up and convincing Burks to stay another year.

People need to give this up, under absolutely no circumstance (barring a lockout before the draft) is Burks staying.

If you are Bohn and you are starting to hear Boyle's name come up in other job openings you reward him for a good season. Extension plus bonus. Customary buyout fees, etc. are good and necessary. However, the best way to make him stay is provide him the resources he needs to compete in the PAC and pay him competitively. Something that should be done for any coach we want to keep.

That is completely true, look at many coaches that stayed somewhere for a long time, they dont stay there because the school pays them a lot of money, its because the school works with them to make them sucessful.

crazy...I'm agreeing with you. SnowBuff is completely right - even if we had Bz this year as coach, our team would have done pretty well in my opinion. As good - who knows. But the bottom line is that Bz handed over a good situation to Boyle. Having two All-Big12 performers on your team really helps. We NEED to know how good Boyle is with his own team. Next season will be very telling. If we win next season too, then I say yes, give him an extension. But after one year with another coach's players?

Do nothing. Yes he had a good year with a team that has played well down the stretch. Prove it in year two.

I'd say maybe a slight pay raise and maybe a one year extension. Year two is gonna be tough for Boyle if Burks leaves. He inherited a team with a very solid group of senior players (Higgins, Knutson, Relphorde) and then he had Burks who is one of the best players in the country. If they are all gone next year then the team loses 75% of its scoring. Tough for any coach to overcome. Some of the freshman look good, especially Roberson (reminds me alot of Derek Hood from Arkansas back in the 90's), but can one of them be the big time scorer that Burks and Higgins are? Can any of the incoming class for next year do that? The Buffs got shafted out of the NCAA's this year, but next year will be rough, and if Boyle can get the Buffs into any postseason play next year then he will have done a hell of a coaching job.

That JUCO kid we have coming in could stop the major bleeding in scoring if he puts up the kind of numbers he is capable of.

I was watching the Okie St. Wash St. game and the announcers were talking about CU and the job Boyle has done. One, very cavalierly, stated "he won't be there next year", and the other agreed. I wanted to throttle the jerk through the tv.

That's great to hear. Right now people are in the denial phase. Next year, it turns into something else as they rave about the turnaround, the opening of the new practice facility, the beneficial move to the Pac-12, the unprecedented fan support, and the major uptick in recruiting. This is turning into a really good job.

As we know, Boyle's not going anywhere. He'd love his career legacy to be that he built a basketball power on the front range at his home state's flagship university while also taking in-state prep basketball to the next level.

Boyle just got a big freaking raise this year when he moved to CU from UNC. Let's see how he does next year. If he can get CU into the tournament (the NCAA tournament, not the NIT) next year, extend and give him a nice fat raise.

If somebody comes calling this year, which I kind of doubt, but if it happens - then give him a bonus this year and work out whatever you need to in order to keep him. He's the real deal.

Tell him to maintain the momentum and he gets a nasty big paycheck once the pac12 cash starts flowing.

Tough to convince a guy to give up money that is staring him in the face (another team) while hoping the team he currently coaches someday decides to provide it's coach a decent payday.
