2011 NBA Draft: Will Colorado's Alec Burks Crack the Top Five

As much as I hate the terribly opinionated nature of everything Bleacher Report, this article wasn't too bad on whether Alec Burks is a top five talent in this draft; although, it never came to a conclusion.

It mentions the lack of talent around Burks. I definitely see the problem with our lack of a true point guard and how that could benefit Burks, with more options for him to take uncontested shots. Not a bad read.

It would be very hard to say the Alec is one of the five best players in the draft.

That said Alec has the potential to go anywhere from top 5 to late first round, early second.

He has a lot of pieces of his game that need to be developed and that is why as a basketball player I think he would be better off staying at CU for another year but with the money hanging out there I don't think he will.

The thing that could move him way up is his star potential. He is a tremendous athlete who has the ability to do spectacular things. All he has to do is convince one team that he could develop into the kind of player that NBA teams like. That means a guy who will make plays that end up on sportscenter and bring fans out of their seats.

Guys who do all the fundamentals right and have well rounded games may be better players but they don't sell tickets. Guys who can sky for a rebound or flash for a spectacular steal and then take the ball the length of the court, drive around a defender, and dunk over another defender are the guys who sell tickets. This is what Burks brings to the table. It doesn't hurt that he can be a very solid wing defender, play the 2 or 3, handle the ball well and pass it well, and make big plays at key times. What will bring him up in the draft is the hope that he can become a ticket selling star.

Burks is a 1st round talent. He will probably be a lottery pick, although not top 5. He is a good player, and it's not just potential. There is no way that he lasts past pick number 20 in my opinion.

A lot of it depends on who comes out....Harrison Barnes of UNC, Knight and Jones of UK, Williams of Arizona, Harris of Tennessee, Kemba are some names that probably come out and go ahead of Burks. There is the Kenter kid that never got to play for UK that is top 5.

I personally think that the NBA lockout is going to cut into their season next year and that might make a few people stay (Knight of UK, Barnes of UNC). But, I also think Burks should stay, play with a true point guard and have a monster season.

I agree that he is a first round talent. My point is that where he goes in the first round is going to depend on the workouts and pre-draft process. Alec has the talent physically to catch the eye of sombody and move himself up in the draft significantly. All he needs is to catch the eye of one team who thinks he can be a star and he will move up significantly.
