OSU game / Jim Tressel

I know this is ongoing, but I'm a little confused here.

If Tressel is suspended for the first 5 games, does this mean he's still leading practices? Is he allowed in the locker room at all?

With all due respect to BCS, he is a Michigan fan too IIRC...so I would take his "Tressel is gone" conclusion with a grain of salt. He may be right, but the NCAA is pretty consistent about prostituting itself to the OU, U$C, and tOSU's of CFB. I am sure the NCAA will be able to convince itself that whatever lame, pandering, meaningless penalty is meted out to tOSU is protecting the integrity of the student-athlete effectively.

As a matter of fact, they will probably convince themselves of that shortly before the sweat from Tressel's nutbag has dried from their chin....

I'm gonna disagree with you a bit on this one. The NCAA is all about overlooking infractions with the big boys as long as you are buddy buddy with them. However, when you lie and falsify information to them, repeatedly no less, that is when the NCAA becomes like a lover scorned. I'm thinking especially this case, because OSU got a sweetheart deal for the Bowl game. So now the NCAA really looks ridiculous. I was reading an article about similar situations for other institutions in the past and the number of coaches that survived these situations is very very low. OSU may have to cut ties with Tressel just to try to mitigate the coming sanctions. Personally, I think he is done, but we shall find out soon enough.

Because of all the $ he has brought into the program - I think Gordon Gee and the rest of the spineless jellyfish keep him. " The Vest" is a pretty good freakin liar - I'll give him that.

fify.

I hope you are right, but OU was having it's players paid by that car dealer when they were in the MNC hunt, Cam Newton's dad pockets $250K while AU is a MNC contender, U$C gets handled with kid gloves over the Reggie Bush deal...the NCAA has a long history yielding to the big boys. I remain skeptical, but hope you are right.

I'm less worried about whether Tressel gets fired than I am about whether this game will be on TV. If the NCAA comes down hard and bans OSU from TV, I'll be pissed especially if that also means CU's game day payout is slashed because of it.

For that reason alone, I'm actually hoping the NCAA takes its sweet ass time handing down any ruling.

are you sure? I think if our payout is reduce, we need to consider it a breach of contract and find some school to bring in for a home game and an easy win.

I don't think that the NCAA would take away TV rights from OSU. That hurts way too many people besides the team being punished.

I really hope Colorado never has an off the field scandal, that would really suck. Could set the program back for a decade.....

No, I'm not sure at all, just wondering what happens like everyone else. I'm sure we have some sort of default language, but if OSU gets a TV ban I doubt they're just going to cut us a check for the $1M plus we would have gotten for that game and let us go on our merry way. It would be really tough to find another game to fill that hole in the schedule this late, not to mention you've then got to deal with fans who may have already made travel plans.

My uneducated guess is that if OSU got banned from TV we'd still play the game and settle on some smaller payout in exchange for a return trip to Boulder in the future.

Isn't that basically our Hawkins buyout slushfund game? Losing out on a chunk of that money would hurt.

you do...and even though i'm taking immense pleasure in this... and believe me its decadent deliciousness is beyond comprehension... but there is no way he survives this and this isnt my maize and blue glasses blinding me.. he lied the ncaa... as someone said above its a no-no... if bruce pearl was bounced for lying about a BBQ... there is just no way he can survive this...

Tressel would still conduct all practices and do all the game planning.

The only difference would be on game day and who would be handling clock management while making decisions on whether to go for it on 4th down, go for a 2 pt conversion, etc. Basically, this self-imposed punishment is a joke that amounts to nothing... especially by the 5th game when they'll have any kinks worked out.

Look, I do hope you are right...I just think the NCAA has a history of whitewashing the infractions of the big boys. Your point about Pearl is valid, but I would point out there is a huge difference in UT BB and tOSU FB. In the end, I hope you are right...

I'm with BCS on this one. I see almost no way Tressel survives. I expect the NCAA to levy a similar penalty to the one USC received.

Just to play devil's advocate.....the Pearl and Tressel affairs do have one difference. Pearl committed the infractions, and then tried to sweep it under the rug. Tressel knew that others had committed infractions and tried to cover it. The ncaa, in their infinite wisdom, may actually consider this difference when dealing with the luckeyes.

I think this situation is too different to both Pearl's and U$C's. IIRC in U$C's case there wasn't really a smoking gun that anyone on the staff knew exactly what was going on with Reggie Bush, there was just lots of circumstantial evidence and what really got the NCAA going was USC impeding the investigation. I beleive that the running backs coach was determined to have knowledge of what was happening, but it was largely circumstantial.

With Pearl, he did things that he knew were infractions and then withheld information to an NCAA investigation committee while the punishment was being considered and investigation ongoing. One could make the case for Pearl that he would have come clean before the investigation wrapped up.

In Tressel's case, there is PROOF that he knew about the actions of his student athletes and that they were infractions far before any NCAA investigation and did not report these infractions. Moreover, he then likely withheld this information while the NCAA commitee was levying penalties and allowed the investigation to close without divulging his information. This, to me, is two seperate major infractions that will have to be considered seperately. If USC got hammered the way that they did with a minor player on the coaching staff being involved, I don't see how this any better than their situation. Also, I believe that the NCAA said in that case that "high profile people merit extreme punishment" or something similar; if anyone is more high profile than Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo it might be Terrel Pryor and the Vest.

I dunno, the NCAA came down on USC like a ton of bricks. They're appealing, but I don't think it's going to help. If the NCAA hadn't done what they did with USC, I'd believe you. The scholarship losses alone will set back the Trojans significantly.

I agree U$C got smacked, but long after they had their run and only after Bush and Mayo were being paid big bucks. The Cam Newton debacle is fresher in my mind and I think the NCAA may likely yield to tOSU since they are a major player on the CFB scene right now, just like Auburn was this past year. They waited until U$C's star to fade before they really did anything, they are not going to interrupt cash flow IMO.

I dunno, sacky. I think we're all still waiting for the load of bricks to be delivered.

it is going to be good for us. They do the recruiting and we pick up the players when the NCAA hammers them.

When do the sanctions on scholarships start? Rivals rated their 2011 recruiting class #2 - only behind Bama.

they already did, USC ignored all the sanctions and backfilled the positions where players left in this class.

If you can ignore all the sanctions - then there are no sanctions? So where's the ton of bricks falling on them?

I remember reading somewhere that the new U$C AD is saying if the appeal is denied you will see the sanctions kicking in over the next few years for the schollies. The new AD has been indicating a wish to be very compliant. USC will eventually pay the piper.
