CU special teams struggling.

Ugh. Sounds like Castor and Grossnickle have been inconsistent this spring and the snapping has not been very good. Nik mentioned this a couple weeks ago, but it does not seem like the issues are going away because it was mentioned in the DC yesterday.

Is there a solution here?

End of the day....kickers are still kickers, and if they weren't worth squat before, not much a coach is going to be able to do to improve that drastically

Grossnickle was probably the worst punter I've ever witnessed....so even a slight improvement would be noticable

When does Will Oliver arrive on campus?

If he can work with the special teams over the Summer, we might have anther option at PK

Weren't both of these guys pretty good kickers in HS? How does a person go from being able to kick to not being able to kick or was that all just recruiting hype?

Which makes the signing of Justin Castor a bit odd in retrospect. If you look at his high school stats, they do not blow you away. He was 28 of 46 for his career (13 of 22 his senior year). While he did make several longer kicks (40+) in high school, the overall percentage sends up a red flag. If anything, he seemed to excel more as a punter/kickoff specialist.

Were these guys kicking off tees in HS? Difficult adjusting to kicking off the ground?

Considering that the special teams were, by far, the worst unit on a team full of ****** units from last year, I think we'll need more time for them to make improvements. Also we simply don't seem to have the talent here that exists elsewhere on the team that propoer coaching can utilize. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait this out.

Need a frosh to step up, and from what I saw at practice, teh biggest problem with punting was the snapper. He is just not getting it done. Its not the technique, its the fact that the snapper is a head case. That can be fixed easily with a new snapper. As far as castor... I don't think he is a div 1 kicker.

I think the kickers are head cases as well. They have the legs to kick. Between the ears can be fixed, if they had a coach to fix it.

does the pope **** in the woods?

does a fat baby sweat?

Do birds fly upside down?
Does peanut butter come in cans?
Why aren't there bones in ice cream?

All these questions make my head spin. Calgone, take me away.

It's hard to teach kickers to kick it straighter or punters to punt it farther - as others have mentioned it may just be the case that the talent isn't there for Embree and crew to work with.

You CAN however improve the performance of coverage and return teams through coaching and this is where I expect to see some real improvements this year.

We may still miss way too many field goals and shank way too many punts, but our punt and kickoff units MUST be better than the monkey s**t fight we witnessed the last few years.

That's funny.

Special teams has been a concern of mine since Mason Crosby graduated. It's gotten progressively worse every year, unfortunately. I don't have a solution, but I know it needs to be fixed. We're giving up way too much in terms of points and field position to crappy special teams. Hawkins clearly didn't give a damn about it. Embree apparently does care about it, but there may not be much he can do, at least with the kickers themselves. You're right, though, when you say we can improve coverage and returns. We damn well better improve there or we're in a world of hurt.

You must be forgetting Nick Pietsch, the onsides punter.

That's only true to a certain extent....Unfortunately it becomes very very difficult to cover a punt or kick, no matter how much you emphasize it, if your Kicker is still only kicking line drive short balls

I might regret asking this, but can it really get any worse than Goodman? Even Brougham was better.
