Apparently, since Rick Reilly wrote that he thinks Jimmer is way overrated and the hype is ridiculous... and Reilly is a CU alum we all love so much... that the Denver metro culture (especially Boulder) is characterized by religious bigotry... we have a special dislike for the state of Utah, its conservative values, BYU, and the LDS church... and that we are all jealous and resentful of the athletic success at BYU.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700122458/Jimmer-Fredette-bashing-column-the-latest-in-a-litany-of-criticism-from-Colorado.html

I'd quote some, but you just need to read the whole thing.

I did add a poll for you.

Interesting to read the comments after the column (very important to distinguish the difference between a column and an article, an article is a reporting of relavent facts and occurrences, a column is a reporting of opinion by an individual that may or may not be supported by selective use of facts and occurrences.) Both Reilly and Harmon wrote columns, not articles.

Both Harmon and the commentors following are operating under the assumption that Reilly loves CU and is loved by CU, we all know the validity of that idea. They then move to the assumption that Colorado and specifically Boulder have a deep consuming hatred for all things BYU and LDS, ignoring the fact that in truth it is more of an appathetic disgust, no we are not Ute fans who focus our lives on BYU nor are we the rest of the old WAC/ recent MWC fans who have just seen enough of BYU arrogance and self-glorification that they didn't go into a panic when BYU announced they were leaving the conference. It seems that BYU fans expected the other schools to run crying with hands outstretched to beg them not to go (ala the Big Texas schools when UT threatened to leave them,) instead those outstretched hands were gladly giving a final shove out the door.

From reading the comments I get the impression that the columnist Harmon has written frequently of the exploits and greatness of St. Jimmer. It is hard for him to deal with anyone, much less a percieved Boulder liberal, writing bad things about the great Ferdette. This despite the very clear fact that even Reilly for all his lack of reasearch could see in the Florida game and would have seen in others had he watched that Jimmmer is a talented but very limited player. He is a ballhog, shoots when he should pass, is prone to turning the ball over, and either can't or won't play defense. His ballhandling and passing aren't good enough to be a starting point guard in the NBA, he is to small and defensively challenged to be a starting 2 in the NBA. At best he will be a situtional backup called on to provide burst of scoring off the bench.

I guess when you are stuck writing for a newspaper in the middle of a sports vacuum like Utah it is easy to lash out when the illusions you have crafted for yourself and others are exposed.

Reilly, Marriotti, and Paige columns are your evidence? Call me back when you stop submitting your articles in crayon.

CU has pretty much the entire Denver metro area media doing its bidding. We own this state.

He also completely dodges one of the main points in Reilly's article: Jimmer takes a lot of bad shots and makes selfish decisions. That is a fact. But apparently if you say that you must have some ulterior motive based on bigotry.

Jimmer got off light. Dick Harmon should be informed that CU doesn't want Reilly's help. When Reilly announced he was embarrassed to be a CU alum, he stopped representing Buff Nation.

At Colorado they're majoring in b.s. The denials have piled up like cordwood. You show me a coach who maintains he's unaware of recruiting parties featuring paid strippers, of four alleged rapes, of sexual harassment claims by one of his players against other players, and I'll show you a coach who is hell-bent on not knowing.

Makes this alum want to hide his class ring.

- Rick Reilly

Reilly has ripped the University of Colorado a couple of times. He is no friend of ours. We ran Marriotti, the woman beater, out of town when? 15 years ago? Woody Paige is irrevent and takes shots at everyone from 'braskans to Tucson. He probably gets hate mail from all over the country. Doug Looney is/was a hell of a writer. I'm pretty sure Woody wrote some nice stuff about Jimmer during the tournament.

The moron who wrote that article seems to have a long history of thinking Colorado writers hate BYU/LDS. Fact is, Colorado writers also have a history of not being so friendly to CU.

Lol...yep and RICK REILLY is definitely our strongest advocate, it really is surprising how he is able to maintain objectivity and hide his obvious homerism and CU bias

Denver writers have ****ed CU so often that CU finally got rid of the J-School.

If we were going to care about anybody in Utah, it would be da Yutes.

I love how this guy goes through 20 years of articles written by people who worked in Denver, lived in Boulder and/or attended CU, finds 4 or 5 that happen to be less than worshipful of BYU and declares it a pattern. Any idea how many articles (er, columns, sorry Prof. Mtn...) have been written by these people in 20 years? Hint: Out of that many articles, 4 or 5 isn't a pattern, it's statistically insignificant. There are probably 4 or 5 articles on curling in that pool too. I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean that Colorado hates Canadians. Or that Colorado likes Canadians, for that matter.

The University of Colorado has struggled to establish a meaningful collegiate athletic presence outside the professional Denver Broncos since the days of Chuck Fairbanks

i got this far into it and realized the guy writing this article is an clueless tool...

if it wasn't so pathetic, it would be annoyingly funny...

BYU is Utah's old girlfriend that knows all of the Ute's buttons to push.

Now that there is a break-up, this Dick is lashing out. It's envy.

The sad thing is that CU and UU have a blind date on rivalry weekend. The media want this to be a rivalry. But it'll turn out to be an awkward dialog. The CU fans will soon realize that despite the similar coloration, Ute fans are not annoying bug eaters. The worst CU can expect are the BYU fans pretending to be obnoxious UU fans, and the UU fans apologizing for their ex's behavior. Ute fans will have their hands full trying to get BYU fans from jealously peering into the Pac12 bedroom window.

If you want some good entertainment go to mormon.org go in the chat-room and just start talking **** to the representative they give you to pitch the religion, but make sure to do it in the form of questions. Ex: do you really wear magic underpants? Why do all mormons hate black people? They're job is to answer the questions without getting mad but if you get them mad you win.

i've lived in Denver, Boulder, Nashville, Durham NC, Norman/OKC, Boston and SF at various times and i've never EVER seen a local media with a more open blend of ambivalence and hostility to the local university BCS type school than the Denver media and CU.

^^Right this^^

BYU is pissed at everybody right now. They thought that they were going to go to the PAC and instead the Utes got the invitation. After decades of talking about how bad the UU is now they have to face getting rejected for the Utes. CU getting an invitation before the Utes makes it hurt even more since they see themselves as being morally superior to CU (and CU already had a spot in the BCS, going to the PAC took a spot the Y thought was theirs even if the Utes went.)

They are also pissed because rumors said that they made overtures towards the Big Texas and got rebuffed as well. Texas doesn't want another prima dona in that league, especially one that won't make Texas more money. They also thought that in leaving the MWC that league would come crawling to keep them in, wrong again. Instead of putting out a hand to bring them back those schools gave them a shove. The MWC figures that Boise is +/- equal to TCU, Nevada was better in football than BYU this year, Fresno is a decent mid-major so they are if anything better off without having to deal with BYU stuff.

I would guess that when CU and UU meet up the Ute fans are going to be so busy laughing at the BYU fans looking in and complaining from the outside that they won't really pay that much attention to CU, at least this time around.

If the BYU fans want to further this conspiracy theory, they might point out that Matt Stone and Trey Parker have made some money by poking a little fun at LDS on South Park. Recently these Academy Award winners and CU alum debuted The Book of Mormon on Broadway, garnishing more critical acclaim.

If Mormons were Afghanistani's, there might be some decapitated Coloradoans. But the only high profile mutilated bodies I know about involves Aron Rolston of 172 Hours fame. This Cherry Creek HS graduate cut off his own arm in his attempt to get the hell out of Utah.

By the way, sorry if this has been mentioned already and I didn't see it, but Reilly is the commencement speaker for graduation this spring. So to be fair to this BYU writer, looking in from the outside I can understand why he would think that Reilly and other media members are synonymous with CU and the Boulder area.

If the Utah media wants to fabricate a CU media driven conspiracy, then turnaround is fair play.

Denver has never forgiven SLC for trading Rosanne Barr in exchange for CU alum Robert Redford and a future draft pick. Seems Denver got the short end of that deal.

Denver ultimately settled the trade by claiming Mormon raised Amy Adams.

The author of that article gets paid? Amazing. First he talks about a track record dating back 3 decades, then comes up with 4 articles. That train is jumping a lot of track. Finally, right before patting himself on the back as a good detective finding a pattern, he names an article that breaks the pattern. I challenge you to make up a more pathetic set of arguments and get them in print. But then, what the hell is the Deseret news, a school newspaper?

Next best thing. It is a mouthpiece for the LDS church, if not officially in all other ways. It will always be in support of the church position and always be in support of BYU which is the churches university.

That writer has no clue. Alluding to Mariotti and Reilly being CU homers is asinine. They may have connections, but negative pub from Reilly has seemed much more prevalent than any hype, and Mariotti was only in Denver for a few years. He's a drifter (mostly Midwest/East Coast), and I don't think anyone claims him as their own. I grew up in Chicago, and I was pumped when I didn't have to read any more negative articles about Chicago teams and Illinois schools that were written by Mariotti when I moved out here to finish up school at CU. While the author might have his facts right and to the layman, it looks like a bunch of CU homers have picked on BYU/Utah, it's mostly just articles written by cranky journalists who are harder than the home teams than anybody else.

I've been a longtime reader, but I finally joined a week ago and this is my first post. I won't post much, but if something gets me fired up or I have good info I'll put my two cents in. I'm getting excited about the new staff and bringing some pride back to CU football.

Welcome, Goonie - Strong first post.

Very cool to step up with the Club Membership, too. With the extras you get, I think it's easily the best value among fan sites.

I can't decide what part of that article i find most ridiculous. It might be saying that douche nozzle Mariotte represents the region, but I'll go with something unmentioned so far in this thread. He brings up Ty Detmer, completely ignoring Koy, who was a very good Buff. We really hate those Detmers, except for Koy.
