Pac-12 Going Global - $$$ for tv rights only the domestic part

Once the media rights negotiations are completed, look for commissioner Larry Scott to take the Pac-12 show overseas.

The third phase of his plan to remake the conference … first phase: expansion; second: domestic TV deal … is to make a big push into Asia (and perhaps Europe, as well)....

Scott wouldn’t discuss the specifics of his international plans with me other than to acknowledge he has them — but based on conversations with sources, here’s my best guess:

Starting next fall or in 2012, the league begins its international push, most likely with its soon-to-be-formed media company leading the way.

The planned media company will oversee the league’s broadcasting and digital/mobile rights and possess a commercial development arm that could head the marketing charge in China, Japan, South Korea, India and elsewhere.

Too much great stuff in this blog to fit into a single post. Jon Wilner is the man when it comes to Pac-12 reporting and the Mercury News is by far the best news outlet.

I have a feeling that the CU snowboard team will love this. They love that **** over there. Olympic sports in general will love this as well.

and loooky here...

And there will be future realignment, folks — perhaps not in the next 2-3 years, but eventually. As someone with connections in the Texas administration told me: “The Pac-16 thing isn’t over.”

:stupid: Please no Texas, please dear god no. I'll take 14 with the Okie schools, Kansas schools, KU/MU or anything else, but no no no Texas.

Would they really consider realigning all the divisions again in a few years. That would suck ass. Just say no to Texas

Except, CU will have a vote in those talks.... no?

Again, no way in holy hell will Texass be admitted to the Pac 12 while having their own proprietary TV network. They will only be admitted if they adopt the revenue structure now estabilished.

Not sure if the conferences can sell foreign TV rights themselves or who handles it for them. ESPN America, for example, has access to the ESPN college games as well as the CBS SEC games, but not the Fox games. The Cotton Bowl wasn´t on TV here as the Bowl has an agreement with Fox. Think it actually might be handled on a sport by sport basis and I can´t see a Pac 12 only package drawing much interest internationally.

I think those are probably repackages of the networks' rights to first tier and second tier programming. Scott would be selling the rights to the third tier programming--i.e. the rights to broadcast events that haven't already been sold to a domestic network--i.e. the Pac 12 Networks' content.

hard to speculate on how a deal might come together, but i think it is reasonable to suspect that texasss would have to do a lot of moving on their current demands in order to get into the conference. i think the b12 conference is going to blow apart and texasssss may have to choose between playing nice and joining the pac or going independent. given the size of any texan's ego, the latter might be inevitable.

ps, wouldn't it be totally awesome if CU were to cast the deciding vote that kept texasssssssssss out of the conference? or even ****ing baylor for that matter...

I see it being big in east asia. There are a lot of international students from Asia in the Pac-12 footprint.

I doubt tehass would even get close to enough entry votes after the shell game they played with the PAC. Those other schools will remember.

we should position to be the last holdout vote (like they do in congress) so that texassss has to come to us with a bountiful offering in order to attempt to win our approval.

muhahahahaha.

^^F-ing this^^
If the PAC12 actually gets all the stuff that they're talking about to work out, obviously they'd be the ones holding all the cards. We could say we're doing absolutely fine without Texass (hopefully noticably better than them even with their network). They would have to give up a lot of individuality to join our conference. There is no way that would happen. They feel they're on the cutting edge being the first non-ND school with their own network (They may be right, fu@kers). They absolutely would go Indy before they join our conference.

I actually would support us making a play at some of the other former Big12 schools. Disband that conference and force Texas' hand before they're ready. They would choose going Indy tomorrow over joining any conference, even the Big 10-12 or the SEC. That would be downright sick. Take OU, OSU, and one other school outside of Texas (KU/Mizzou...I could support an invite to aTm, although I would throw up a little) starting in 2014 or something. That would keep the MWC in fear of us taking their next rising star, but basically tell Texas they can join as just another school or find their own competition in all sports.

As much as all you (and me) hate Texas, they're an absolute cash cow and would be a huge asset to have in a revenue sharing conference. It would benefit CU to have Texas in the Pac16, they just need to come in knowing they're nothing but another school.

That´d make sense. The NBA, MLB and NHL sell their international rights collectively also although all teams have agreements with their local sports stations.

Define "big". East Asia works far better with the kickoff times etc. due to the time difference, but I guess any college sport package sold internationally is more about exposure and having a presence in that market rather than money.

I am obviously looking at this from the European angle, but I guess the only league which can fetch some "significant" money in the European market is the NBA. Baseball and football are niché sports for geeks who sell their rights dirt cheap for the "exposure", hockey is popular in Scandinavia and some Eastern European countries, but the Scandinavian countries are simply too small and Russia has the population, but it isn´t as developed as Western European countries (the domestic Russian soccer rights sell for roughly $30m a season!) and the only pro league that remains is the NBA and they like to play hardball, which is why there hasn´t been a decent package on German TV in ages. German TV is a bit difficult and special ... the NBA thinks it has a good product and gets some decent money in Spain for example and they want the same here, but the TV stations say no.

College FB and College Hoops are complete niché sports for freaks and geeks.

I wasn't thinking so much about football. More basketball and baseball. The winter sports might also be very popular. The Chinese love basketball so if the Pac-12 can sell rights in China then that would be huge. Same with baseball in Japan.

Yao Ming II, come to CU!

F**k texas. I don't want to have anything to do with them. The bastards are still screwing with us. Texas has single handedly destroyed two once-proud conferences. Don't allow them to do the same thing to our new home. F**k texas and the bloated, drugged out cow they rode in on.

I think they love their fellow countrymen far more than they love the sport. There´s no to little connection to the teams/schools and I guess you have to be a HUGE geek to be seriously interested in college hoops and baseball if you have no to little connection.

They want to see Yao Ming, Dice K and Ichiro.

Except for maybe March Madness I can´t see any college sport being any kind of draw internationally. The whole College athletics concept is unique to the US and I think you have to be a HUGE geek if you watch college hoops and baseball in addition to the pros as a foreigner with little to no connection to the schools or the players.

Definitely. That's why Scott is so brilliant. In the US all anyone thinks about are the football and men's basketball rights, the networks don't want anything else. So, Scott is going to sell the stuff that no one here wants to a market that might.
