The purpose of this thread is to share travel tips and plans for CU's game against the University of Hawaii on Sept 3rd, 2011.

It's never too early to start thinking about the Hawaii trip in 2011. With the game less than one year away, the airlines are already accepting super-saver early bird reservations.
Get those frequent flier miles and rewards points in order.

Topics ranging from flights to lodging to beaches to bars to Polynesian BBQ supply.

Share your hot deals on airfare.
Pros and cons of basing out of the Big Island, Maui, Oahu, Kauai.

What are some kid friendly resorts? Which places have the best bars and nightlife?
Any house rental companies or other insider tips? Anybody have any sofas to crash upon?

As of 10-24-2010
United Airlines direct RT flights from DEN to HNL are $781.40.
American Airlines direct RT flights from DFW to OGG (Maui) and HNL (Oahu) are $870 RT with the "Economy Super Saver"

What are the chances the CU AD will have to move the Hawaii date to accommodate the 2011 schedule?
I've got to think the Sep 3rd date is sacred and set in stone. But you never know.

Haven't checked Hawaiian Airlines inter-island fares in a loooong time, but they're usually a best bet to get between islands if you want to base out of Maui, Big Island (stay west in Kona or Waikoloa,) or Kauai.

Other inter-island airlines are go! and Mokulele. I'll post links shortly.

I plan on going. Thanks to my employer's penchant for keeping me hostage in airplanes I have a butt load of frequent flyer miles.

I would be cool if the alumni association or somebody could charter a flight

I hope the game is at night. While I love the Buffs. It's hard to sit in sun during the day ( In Hawaii), plus there is too much to do during the daylight hours.

in past years, Boulder travel agencies have offered pacakges. Have you checked with any of them?

Here's link for Hawaiian - http://www.hawaiianairlines.com/ right now showing Maui/Kahului (main airport OGG) to HNL for $63 each way.

Here's go! - http://www.iflygo.com/ just checked one way between Kona (KOA) and HNL - $69 each way
Also looks like go! and Mokulele have entered in to some sort of partnership since I left. There is http://www.mokuleleairlines.com/ but it shares the page with go!

For house/condo rentals, try www.vrbo.com I've found some good places on all the islands using that site.

As far as airlines getting to the islands form the mainland, Hawaiian does non-stops from San Diego, LA, SF, Seattle and Portland to HNL, OGG, and KOA. Alaska Airlines has also jumped onboard recently with non-stops from SEA and PDX to those above plus Lihue (Kauai). www.alaskaair.com I know it's not Denver, but I know that there are some of us based out of those places too. Haven't checked any fares from those different areas yet.

Hope that helps for now!

Go. To. Outer. Islands. Highly recommended: Either Kauai (rustic, grand canyon of the pacific, beautiful, uncrowded) or the Big Island (similar to Kauai, but more spread out and MOTHER****ING LAVA). Maui is ok as well, haleakala is awesome, but it doesn't offer anything you can't get on either Kauai or the big island.

As far as Oahu: Spend as little time in honolulu as possible. Go to the north shore. Get away. I dunno, I lived on oahu for years, but really, its the worst island to visit.

+1. Highly recommend Kauai to see what Hawaii is really all about

Just spent a week on Oahu. We stayed out at Ko Olina at the Marriott Beach Club - fantastic place about 20 miles outside of the city on the West side of the Island. Lots of great things to do on the Island and this resort was fantastic. Had a 2 bedroom villa with a full kitchen and they even had natural gas bbqs available to use any time you needed them. Their is a Safeway, Target, Longs Drug and Costco about 2 miles from the resort and it is only about 15 to 20 minutes to the stadium. Luau every Tuesday night, and it was fantastic. There is also a place close called Paridise Cove less than a mile away that does a great Luau. Gold on the resort witha Roys as well. I can go on about the activities if you are spending a week or so on the Island. Let me know if you want more.

I had this same question and asked someone in the Athletic Dept, and they said I should go ahead and book the trip. So I did.

I'm not a big fan of Kauai. It's a little too rustic for my taste. Restaurants routinely close at 2:00 PM. There are wild chickens everywhere. Too many hippies and mosquitoes, too. I prefer my Paradise to be a little more sophisticated. Of the outer islands, my favorite is Maui. Lots of great restaurants. Lots of world class beaches. Great hiking trails. Haleakala is fantastic. Surfing (if that's your thing) on the North Shore. Wind kiting (if that's your thing) on the neck (south shore where East and West Maui connect). There's also some interesting history that goes with Maui. Lahaina was once a whaling village. Lana'i is a short ferry ride away if you are looking for serious seclusion, too. Maui, in September, won't be very crowded, either. No whales, unfortunately. They don't typically show up until December.

My only experience with tailgating at Aloha Stadium is from the 2007 Pro Bowl. The parking lots are huge, and hot. Asphalt. My buddy, who lives on Oahu, found a nice shady spot under an overpass and we set up there. It worked out great, and the walk wasn't too bad. It also made it easier to get out afterwards.

The stadium itself is very old. Not old with character, like Folsom. Old like Candlestick or Shea Stadium - without any character at all. The stadium is in desperate need of a major renovation, or just a complete tear down and re-build.

However, it's a lot of fun to watch a game there. And if it weren't so damned expensive to fly to the islands, I'd be there for sure.

For any Buff Military types that are going, for lodging get in at the Hale Koa, NOW! Need I say more? Best Mai Tais in Waikiki at the Barefoot Bar and right on the beach next door to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I said "NOW!" b/c most everyone books a year ahead of time to ensure their spot then cancels if things don't go through.

For a cheaper spot (not on the beach but MUCH CLOSER to the stadium) try the Navy Lodge on Ford Island. It's been recently remodeled and about as nice as a military hotel can get (aside from the Hale Koa.) If I win the lottery in the next couple of months, that's definitely where I'll stay for the two nights around the game. Start tailgating at the Lodge, walk across the Ford Island Bridge right into the stadium parking lot, walk back after the game! Mucho convenient!

If you want to stay on maui check this place out-

http://kbhmaui.com/Main/Home/Home.aspx

It's not going to be uber posh like a Westin - It's an older property but very clean & directly on the ocean.
Prices here tend to be 'cheaper' for Hawaii standards.

also - USAir goes non-stop out of Phoenix to Honolulu & Maui. My friend flew out of Colorado Spgs through PHX to Hawaii. At the time the price was cheaper than going out of Denver. Just a thought if $$ is tight.

Hawaiian also goes NS out of Las Vegas.

Kaanapali is nice. I like it up there. If I'm staying at a resort on Maui, I'm going to Wailea, though.

Any favorites in Wailea? I want beach front, kid friendly, & ability to walk to local restaurants off of hotel property.

My asshole friend scheduled his wedding for the same weekend as the Hawaii game..

in Hawaii :woot::dance4:

We are staying near Kawela Bay on the north shore.

I am going to try and spend 3-4 days after the wedding on a different island. Snow, if you had 3 days where would you go after 6 days on Oahu ?

We booked our reservations in January. Spending five days on Maui, then Fri/Sat on Oahu for the game and heading home Sunday. Airfare from Vegas to LA to Maui and back, plus the puddle jumpers came to just under $1000 for two. Didn't think that was too bad. Can't wait as we've never been there. Just have to get the football tickets when they go on sale and all is set. Is it August yet???

any of the outer islands not named Maui. Only really have time to explore one island. I suggest the big island if you want to see lava, or Kauai if you want to see the grand canyon, the na pali coast, etc. Can't lose either one.

I really enjoyed Kauai when I went there last Decemeber. I am not a coffee drinker but I did sample their coffee at a coffee farm and it was great.

EDIT: more details

Plus there is pineapple and other fruits grown on that island. Also you can have laulu roasts...be sure to have an empty stomach for that!

2nd this. I've only been on Oahu and the Big Island, but understand Kauai is pretty cool, not as overrun touristy as Maui. On the Big Island, I dove the Kona Manta Ray night dive (many dive shops do this) which was pretty amazing. If you don't dive, there were also snorkelers at the surface enjoying the plankton feeding frenzy of 23 giant mantas (14ish foot wing spans).

That's the truth about Kauai...you can enjoy Hawaii without the hustle and bustle of tourists on Oahu. I want to go back to that island sooner than later and if possible...stay there forever.

A couple of months ago, I checked several Bldr tavel agents and no one had any charters set up. An AD rep said that the AD was waiting to make sure of the game details (there was talk of changing the date, I think for ESPN) and would put together a package. I like the ID of a plane load of Buff fans all going to the same hotel.
