Jimmy Smith Reputation

What am I missing. Several draft board say that Smith has off field issues. I've never heard of any. Anyone have any insight?

Nothing since his RS Soph season, but 2 or 3 incidents before then. Kind of a bunch of BS, but JS can kind of come off as arrogant, I think some teams are worried he hasn't matured.

A lot of it has to do with draft experts liking to stir up controversy. The easiest way to do this is to bring up off-the-field issues and see if that will impact where they get drafted. It is almost impossible to know how Jimmy's interviews went, as those will do far more to determine his draft spot than his sophomore mistakes in college.

Considering the draft experts don't have a lot to report on during this period, moving players around can get some press.
However, after saying this I do believe that Nick Fairley screwed himself by showing up late to his interviews and missing his flight. That just shows organizations he hasn't matured.

Completely correct. The so called "draft experts" need to have something to talk about. Since they haven't paid much attention to Colorado the past few years they don't know much about Jimmy. They have to fill a certain number of column inches on each player or a certain amount of airtime so the grab for what they can get. A guy comes from Alabama or even TCU they can talk about what he did in such and such bowl or parrot some story on him that was picked up by the media a year or two earlier. Smith doesn't have that so they take what they can get or make up base on what they have.

I would bet that a pretty high percentage (over 25%) of all the draft prospects have something of similar nature in their histories. College kids will drink, get into arguments, miss a couple of practices, or any number of other things that could be turned into a "maturity" arguement or "character" argument is some reporter wanted to. At that point the rest jump on it and you suddenly have a kid with a "problem" in the press. The pros check it out but know the situation and the kid gets drafted anyways.

The guy definitely plays with confidence and talks trash. IMO, I like it, especially with prima donna WRs. It's rarely ever led to on the field issues.

If he drops, then some team will benefit from it. Now he just needs to work on making interceptions.

Part of the lack of interceptions comes from playing on a team that was rarely in a situation that forced opponents to pass.

In a way he will be better off if he is not picked high. Getting picked late in the first round normally means that a guy is going to a team that is already a decent team. He isn't expected to be a savior or even a key player right away. That said Denver sucks but I would like to see him somehow end up a Bronco.

Some of the writers do stir up BS just for a story, but Jimmy has had his issues. He knew they would come up during this process. Hopefully Jimmy has matured since then.

Weed smoking is a major red flag to NFL teams. They do not want the possibility that a high draft pick could be entering the substance program to be an issue. Not sure why that is so hard to understand, it has nothing to do with creating controversy in this case.

Mayock on CBs: Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara will be gone in first 11 picks of #NFL Draft. Jimmy Smith has "unlimited upside."

@ktorgent: Steelers could hope Jimmy Smith falls their way esp after Greg Cosell nabbed him as better than Peterson and Amukamara on tape

seems jimmy will be ok

exactly. percy harvin would have been a top ten pick had he not tested positive. and he's luck the vikings have a history of taking fliers on guys with red flags.
