Michigan upgrades their lacrosse programs to DI status

Michigan's lacrosse program, for a club program, is pretty legit...one of my grad school friends played for them and won a few club national championships there recently...he was saying that this has been a long overdue upgrade for the program - they've been asking for it for years...

I'm expecting similar announcements from CU within the next year. I think we'll add women's lacrosse first along with a re-introduction of men's tennis. Next will be men's lacrosse with probably something like rowing or field hockey on the women's side.

Our women's team is the #1 seed in its conference tourney. It's a very good club squad.

Michigan needed to be D1 a few years ago, they get almost as much funding that varsity D1 teams get.

Never thought we'd do rowing but I assume that the rowing team would use the Boulder Resevior in that case.

And Larry Scott is a former tennis player...fitting that we ought to re-introduce men's tennis.

I assume that women's lacrosse and both indoor track programs will join the MPSF since the other Pac-12 teams with those sports are in that federation as well.

huh, why lacross and not soccer? We are national champs baby!

It would be great if we added a D-1 lax team. Colorado might have more in-state lax talent then any state outside of the east coast and there is a huge local interest in it especially amongst the younger demographic. DU has been able to build a very good program, their is no reason CU couldn't. And unlike baseball it can still be played in the adverse weather we get early in the spring and we wouldn't have to build a brand new stadium we could just use Folsom and/or the soccer field.

Pretty true. There are some very good LAX schools in the Denver area. I know of a few kids just from Heritage who went on schollie at DU and eventually a few of those went to the NLL or whatever it is called.

Indoor lacrosse at the Pepsi Center aka the Mammoth is NLL and outdoor lacrosse aka the Outlaws is the MLL. Colorado definitly has some good lacrosse programs (Arapahoe, Rock Canyon, Chaparral, Kent, Regis, etc). In fact, Chaparral went back east earlier this year and went undefeated or only lost one game IIRC.

Air Force has a lacrosse team as well. CU would make it the third lax team in CO and maybe by having another team, it would encourage CSU (who has a good lax team) and other regional schools to make the move up.

Yep. As far as D1 programs in our part of the country, the closest would be Ohio State, Michigan, Air Force and Denver. Arizona State has a really good club team, as does CSU. If both of those would go varsity, we'd be able to carve out a decent conference.

On the women's side, there's already the Pac-affiliated "Mountain Pacific Sports Federation" conference. The current W-LAX teams are: Cal, Denver, Fresno State, Oregon, Stanford, St. Mary's, and UC Davis. We'll fit in nicely as the 8th team.

BYU could make the jump as well in Men's. Then maybe possibly UNC or Utah Valley, both are very good teams in Division II MCLA. If DU can get 2,000 to their games CU easily can do that. CU would need funding though if it wanted to become an NCAA Tourney team, they have talent I've played against them before but Michigan and DU are on whole other levels, specially when it comes to Canadian and East Coast talent.
