Draft bust game

So with the draft coming up, reply to each post with a former highly rated or early draft pick that turned out to be a major bust in the NFL.

Ryan Leaf

Brian Bosworth.

He was drafted in the supplemental draft though, does that count?

Sorry Burrito.... I don't believe Russell Fact was highly rated or taken in the first round

He showed up for camp a little over weight.

Ted Gregory - Denver Broncos pick in 1988 who was touted (by Dan Reeves) as a dominating DT. Showed up and was short, under 6' tall, small, under 260lbs., and couldn't play. On a roster for a year or so and gone.

Other notables in Bronco History first rounders. Mike Croel drafted #4 in 1991 and made no measurable contribution, Tommy Maddox (who actually later contributed to the Steelers after being out of the league,) Dan Williams #11 in 1993 who played for a few years in the league but was less than notable, Marcus Nash #30 in 1998 who caught all of four passes in the NFL.

We can also look at Jarvis Moss who was drafted #17 in 2007 and hasn't done much. The newer choices than that are still up for debate including Tebow and Moreno

Actually Ted Gregory was not touted by Reeves...the Gregory Draft pick was actually what got Joe Collier fired. Dick MacPherson, head coach at Syracuse was a close friend of Joe Colliers (MacPherson had been on the Broncos Staff with Joe in the 70s). MacPherson insisted that Gregory was a great dominating player and Collier insisted the Broncos draft him (the Broncos really needed defensive help). Reeves was the one who joked the first day he met Gregory that He was shorter than Reeves. Reeves promptly traded Gregory away before the start of the season and fired Collier after the season.

Croel was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the year and had 10 sacks so to say he was a bust is a stretch. He had a 7 year NFL career. Once offenses figured out Croel he was easy to negate...he had a hard time getting off a block but he was very fast off the edge. But Croel should not of been drafted by the Broncos - they should of taken Alfred Williams. Croel had incredible measurables but was not as good of player as Alfred. For some reason the Broncos seemed to avoid CU players under Bowlen...

I don't think you could put Moreno is the same zip code as most of the other players mentioned. He is at least serviceable. 1,700 yards over his first 2 seasons isn't too bad.

Gregory was pushed by Collier but Reeves was the one who had final say and didn't trust his scouts to check up for him. Collier gets blame, Reeves is ultimately at fault. On draft day Reeves talked Gregory up, it was funny to see him the next day when Gregory got to town and Reeves realized what he had actually drafted.

Croel did have a good rookie season, they designed things for him and he took advantage although his production was mostly in the first half of the season and dropped way off as soon as other teams as you mentioned caught on to his weaknesses.

Croel and Marino are well above the the rest of the guys on this list and even Maddox and Dan Williams can be argued to have made some contributions as pros compared to the real bust on the list. Moss still could turn into a decent contributor if healthy and in the right system.

Gregory was clearly not worth drafting, much less with a first. Nash was also a wasted pick although he had enough physical talent to justify a look. He just wasn't an NFL player.

Gregory's knee injury in his senior season did him in more than anything. He never really recovered from that.

Wasn't Tommy Maddox the QB for only team ever to win an XFL championship? Hardly a bust for you diehard LA Xtreme fans out there.
