Jimmy Smith's "off the field" problems reportedly worse then we knew of

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in addition to the 2 citations for possesion he also failed 3 (not 1) drug tests while he was here one of which was for coedine syrup (i.e Jamarcus Russell), he was also arrested for aggravated assualt at some point, and impregnated two different girls who ended up needing to get abortions. You could argue that this last one is a private matter but I think NFL people see it as a lack of judgement and maturity. Several scouts and executives raved about his ability with some saying that he will be a star in the leauge, but 11 of 24 people polled said they wouldn't draft him in the first 2 rounds presumeably because of character concerns.

I don't care if this stuff is true. I am uncomfortable disparaging a Buff on a Buff site just before the draft.

If he was arrested for aggravated assault that information would be available and would have come out earlier. Failed drug tests as well because he wouldn't have been able to play...

I don't know about this article.

I really think he is being sabotaged. I think people see that he will be a great NFL QB and someone later in the draft wants him. Dirty dirty dirty ****.

Nothing recent. It's also important to note that Jimmy completed his degree in December. I think that also says a lot about him.

Interestingly Mel Kiper moved Smith up to 23rd stating
Character issue overstated in eyes of many personnel folks.
Sounds like a team wants him later in the draft.

I'm scratching my head. How could someone at Colorado fail four drug tests, yet still be allowed to play? How could this only be coming out now?

Are these NCAA sanctioned drug tests? If so, why wouldn't there have been a suspension? CU's been gun-shy about being put in this position after the so-called scandal six years ago.

Did CU administer these drug tests and fail to notify the NCAA? Was the Boulder Camera withholding info? Did Hawkins turn a blind eye? Are these tests that have been taken outside of the AD?

And how on earth can a Milwaukee paper scoop the local rags?

I want sources, or I want an apology.

I posted an article I didin't disparage anyone. And you don't think an article pertaining to Smith's draft stock is relevant one day before the draft? Especially one that brings new information to light? I suppose you would be happy if the mods censored information here like the Chinese government does.

Even if it doesn't make sense? You know why you posted it.

I did not mean to imply that you were disparaging someone. I apologize. I just don't like seeing negative things about our Buffs. Especially since this is one who could actually go day one and could give us some positive PR.

does seem a bit strange....and while i personally don't care if players puff it from time to time.....if true (IF), 3 or 4 is simply bad crime. character issue would be stupidity more than the grievousness of the offense. or: failure to punish the first time, leads to the idea that it's not a punishable offense and so you get repeat failures. was this the same criterion for all players? seems like some guys had a shorter leash with the previous staff. again, total speculation.

i don't want to bash a CU guy before the draft....who knows who is reading AB as part of their draft diligence? but, i'd like to see less perspective here where CU players are all choir boys and unfairly punished in Boulder, by the NCAA, or the evil faculty and when other teams have players in trouble they are de facto "win at all costs" renegade programs in towns where the local police look the other way or are "getting paid". it's a little too black and white to be credible as assessment.

I don't know if this is true or not but for those of you who didin't bother to read the article these are not the writers revelations from some investigative snooping he was doing on Smith. It's not some conspiracy by the paper to kill Smith's draft stock. Supposedly Jimmy told NFL teams about these things during pre draft interviews and that's in part how they came to light. One exec was quoted as saying
"Two abortions, aggravated assault, two minors in possession, three failed drug tests  . . .  that's a little excessive," the personnel man said.
Given all that we have heard about Smith's character concerns and being suprised by this since he didin't seem to have done much worng I think it's fair to assume that these things are true. 11 of 24 personel people saying they wouldn't take Smith in the first 2 rounds would also indicate that these things are true. I don't think they hurt his draft stock though. He will still go in the 1st round.

At this point, I don't think Jimmy Smith's PR machine is doing a good job of boosting the image of CU, no matter which round he's drafted. With each passing week, were left scatching our heads about a Jimmy Smith even hard core Buff fans never knew. Jimmy's alleged "off field" and "character" issues are dominating the draft discussions to the detriment of CU football's public image.

It's too bad this is overshadowing any promotion of Nate Solder.

Here is a preemptive "**** You" going out to John Henderson.

I just wanted to get that out of the way before that Oregon/Nebraska knob gobbler jumps on this bandwagon.

The abortion thing IMO is way out of line to even be mentioned in the article. It isn't illegal. Maybe some people think it should be but it isn't.

Again, NFL teams probably see it as a lack of judgement and maturity, especially since it happened twice. It's not a huge deal and could happen to anyone but these teams are investing tens of millions of dollars into these players, they take everything into account.

I don't know why this has pissed me off so much. Cam Newton is Tapir Taint yet that must be old news cause I see nothing about his crap anymore. A lot of drafts have him going #1 overall.

Why are we hearing all this **** about Smith but nothing on Newton? The dude was kicked out of an SEC school and soon will be the center of an NCAA violation. Do you know how hard it is to get kicked out of an SEC school?

I went through an abortion while I was playing football. Didn't hurt my play one bit. If anything, it helped it because the field, locker room and weight rooms were escapes from the stress. Based on Jimmy's on-field performance, it didn't cause problems for him either. Total bull**** to be airing this in public. Last time I checked, consensual sex and abortions were both completely legal and also outside the NFL's personal conduct policy. Bull****. I'd like to know how many of the hypocrites in NFL front offices haven't had a scare or more in their lives. Amazingly, they still achieved enough to be very successful in their careers.

/rant (for now. i could get going again. this really pisses me off.)

seriously, what worse: jimmy's girl having two abortions, or cromartie having nine kids from different girls across the country and not remembering all their names?
