Ohio State is really in hot water with the NCAA

How the hell is the coach hiding known violations not "failure of institutional control" or "failure to monitor" ?

I think the fact that the University itself discovered the violations and self-reported them by forwarding the emails to the NCAA spared them of the failure to monitor and lack of institutional control charges. The university looks ok in that sense. My big issue is that Tressel should already be fired. He out and out lied and then covered up. Fire him.

So, most coaching contracts have huge bonus clauses for winning conference championships or BCS championships - if a team has to vacate wins, can the University recoup that money from the coach? I would guess they can.

I ask because even if Tressel is fired, he'll get another job in a year or two (see Calipari, J.). He made a ton of money, leaves for other work and the school and the program is left holding the bag. Hell, Pete Carroll screwed USC and basically got a promotion by going to the NFL. What's the incentive not to cheat if cheating works?

I would agree if this was the first violation under Tressel.

Sacred cows can poop anywhere. I'm also sure that OSU boosters are actively buying NCAA board members right now. It will be reported that OSU received "harsh penalties" but in actuality it will amount to a slap on the wrist.

You know what kills me? The "we're going to vacate your wins from a season in the past". Who the F cares? That is the stupidest punnishment in the world! No one in CFB changes their stats to reflect this punnishment. There is never any real world impact with the exception that, maybe, a team must give back a conference championship or bowl trophy. This is completely hollow unless the team won the MNC and even then the media and sports world will still call the cheating team the winner because they won of the field.

Exactly. Maybe it would hurt a little worse if the school had to give back the $$$ earned in that big bowl game. That would be a "sentence fits the crime" type justice, but we'll never sit it.

Why not just revoke an offending coach's eligibility to recruit? Every coach has to pass a test to become eligible to recruit, so presumably the NCAA could revoke or suspend that right as well, right? At least that would stick with the coach and not just punish his former school. It might also motivate schools to fire these cheaters since keeping them around will hurt the ability of the program to recruit.

His pink slip is signed, just depends on when. Kind of reminds me how Barnett escaped for a while, but the minute his record slipped up, he was outta there.

Don't lie to the NCAA. The punishment for that is worse than the punishment for just about any actual rule breaking. The lies actually threaten their authority and that bothers them much more than when the big dogs cheat.

I scanned the comments on the story. Compared to the support Tress was getting from fans when this first came out, it seems OSU fans are now jumping off the wagon. I'm beginning to wonder about the innocence of Gee and Smith. A husker fan commented something about leaving the Big 12 to get away from Texas only to join the Big 10 and now they have to deal with OSU. If Tress stays, the negative recruiting will explode.

This is a golden opportunity for the NCAA. Their new president recently stated how it should never be an issue for a school as to whether the punishment is worth the crime. Everybody knows that Tressel has no business keeping his job given what he has done. If I were the NCAA, I would bury Tressel so deep in sanctions that tOSU has no choice but to cut ties with the guy. Otherwise, it is just another way of setting the example that people who do this not only can survive it, but not even really suffer for it.

I can hope....

i have a hard time getting excited about this whole thing.

mainly because i think the en see double-a is about as corrupt as any organization can get...

remember, they have ****ed us multiple times in the ass without consideration or remorse.

they suck.

tosu is just their latest altar boy....

Chis Spielman said today on ESPN that Tressel will have a very difficult time remaining at Ohio State. He's a gone pecan.

Ya, I havent heard any official reports about it but the consensus around the sports world right now is that OSU needs to choose whether they want to be a premier football school and sacrifice its morals for that or to save face and fire the coach before fall camp. Is the sweater vest finally going out of style?

Herbstreit on this morning saying that OSU fans are delusional for backing Tressel just because he's won - that if this were Jon Cooper, he'd be fired by now

I agree. I have zero confidence in the NCAA. They will do something here to make sure their cash cow is protected. Probably go after Tressel and not the school. If CU had done this, CU would receive much harsher punishment than OSU ever will.

The one thing I'm curious about with these cash cow references. How is the NCAA compensated by schools? Wouldn't the fall of tOSU just be a transferral of success to another university or universities that would subsequently generate a corresponding uptick in their revenues?

Not sure on the answer to your first question, but for the second I think it's generally believed that a highly successful Ohio State program would bring in a lot more revenue and exposure than, say, a Wisconsin or Michigan State with the same level of success. Their built-in fan base and national appeal is just inherently larger. You could pretty much see proof of the NCAA's buddy-buddy relationship with OSU when they decided their 5 players would be eligible for the Sugar Bowl and not start serving suspensions until the 2011 season.

lets not forget Gordon Gee has made it clear where he stands on winning.

He's probably starting to get a lot of heat from the OSU trustees though, and it looks like a lot of the fans are turning on Tressel. It's no longer just an issue for the AD, the continued employment of Tressel is going to affect the school as a whole.

The players sold over 36 different items for cash and cars and tatts, that was today's news can't wait to see what else comes out he could get worse penalty.

More **** is hitting the fan....Ray Small tells all: Ex-Buckeye says he sold memorabilia, some players don't 'think about' rules
"We had four Big Ten rings," he said. "There was enough to go around." Small said he sold the rings to cover typical costs of living. "We have apartments, car notes," he said. "So you got things like that and you look around and you're like, ‘Well I got (four) of them, I can sell one or two and get some money to pay this rent." The wheeling and dealing didn't stop with rings. The best deals came from car dealerships, Small said. "It was definitely the deals on the cars. I don't see why it's a big deal," said Small, who identified Jack Maxton Chevrolet as the players' main resource.

from the comments in that at article...
The real crime is that any of these dumb football players are allowed to even get in to college let alone graduate. They must have skated their way thru high school, middle school, and grade school without doing any book work based on their language skills
