QB recruiting-where do we go from here?

Bart Houston committing to Wisconsin is a pretty big blow. We have offered six QBs thus far and four (including Cyler Miles) are not seriously considering us at this time. The other two, Dillon and Wilson, have us among their favorites but we are not necessarily the leaders. And Dillon wants to wait out the process. This leaves us in a spot where we have to get out and see some QBs this month. I am not saying every single one of these guys below is worth an offer or even if any of them are, but they are prospects I am guessing are on the coaching staff's radar.

Preston Dewey (Austin, TX)-Coached by Ty Detmer, so there is a natural connection to the Detmer family here. He also showed well at the Fort Worth Elite 11 Camp. Lots of big schools are slow-playing him, so an offer from us might interest him.

Matt Morin (Temecula, CA)-He was offered by the last staff and plays at the same high school as Tyler Hansen. He also showed well at the LA Nike Camp.

Chad Voytik
(Cleveland, TN)-Undersized prospect, but he has good arm strength and accuracy. He has been tearing it up on the camp circuit this spring and might be the most underrated QB in the country. He also was recently named to the Army All-American Bowl. He has some early favorites, but we could sneak in here IMO.

I'm sure there are many others out there we have an eye on, but these three were the ones that jumped out to me.

AZ says he got some new QB names he's posting tonight.

I'll create profiles tomorrow.

We need to deploy Eric Bienemy and Cabral to help out Rip in recruiting the QB for 2012. Still early in the proccess, the four guys that we need to recruit the hardest are
1. Houston-despite his commitment to Wisconsin
2. Dillion
3. Goss
4. Travis Wilson

If we don't get atleast one of this guys, I will save the scholarship for the following year.

How bout Russell Wilson. He's transfering out of NC State and is part of the Rockies organization.....

Any posts/threads on recruiting strategy? My search turned up nothing but interested if there is one. Not too long ago there were several posts on the site stating we didn't want to get our QB commitment too early because we might miss out on someone better. Thoughts?

And while I'm here...there have been posts that Rip and Brown are not the best recruiters, which would be worrisome. Any truth to this?

No worries about getting a commitment too early. Very selective offers out there right now. If we got any of the guys we've offered, we'd be landing a top 20 quarterback.

As far as Rip and Brown not being the best recruiters, they're not. Cerebral NFL types. They are going to recruit on their resumes. But it's probably going to take Embo, EB or one of the other great recruiters on the staff to help close.

Yeah, we actually want a commitment from a QB sooner rather than later. We need to lock that position up.

Big bang, putting the most resources into a QB already committed does not seem like the wisest strategy. I also think you are overrating Gross quite a bit.

Not gonna lie, I haven't paid close attention towards recruiting before this year. It seems pretty premature to worry too much about this, though. I mean we are only looking at Juniors right now, so I'd imagine with kids growing and maturing that come next football season the whole field with look different. Some kids will come out of no where and some will drop off.

In you guys experience, how good of a picture do you think we have of the elite quarterback picture at this point? Are there going to be just a few surprises? Are some of the best still to come?

We pretty much know who the elite guys are. Some of the less heralded 3* types will blow up during summer camps and/or during their senior seasons, but QB is pretty predictable. Actually, the elite players in general are pretty predictable. What separates the good recruiting from the bad at this level is talent evaluations of the 3* type guys (and maybe finding an unrated or 2* guy or three every cycle who other programs missed and we stash until signing day - ie, Speedy Stewart). If you can land the elites, though, you do. Most of them work out and they also have a positive effect on attracting other recruits for the class.

Elite QB prospects commit early. We want and need an elite QB. Hoping to find a diamond in the rough was Hawkins strategy, and even he generally got his QB commits relatively early.

Bummer...well hopefully the Embree charm will work on one of the remainders some time soon. I can understand their hesitation. It wouldn't be a killer to go through another cycle so the recruits can really see what our offense is all about next year. Perhaps that is realistic, but I'll still keep my fingers crossed for one of the elites to jump on board right away.

I still think we have a very good shot at both Wilson and Dillon, so I'm not ready to jump off the bandwagon yet. We do, however, desperately need a "top" guy, not a guy that has potential and a couple of offers. We need a guy that most of the P12 is after, or would be after if they had a spot for (I think Wilson and Dillon fit that). There's just no other way around it. This year is tailor made for us getting a top 5 Cali QB because half of the P12 filled up on QBs last cycle. This cycle another large portion of the schools already have their guy. There's simply no reason we should lose out.

Of the three BB posted, I thought Voytik looked the best. You could tell he could really put some heat on his throws. Dewey seemed to have a very good feel for the timing of his throws. Morin looked like a solid prospect as well, not sure why he doesn't have any offers.
