Gary Williams retiring from Maryland

http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebas...ary-Williams-retiring-after-22-seasons-050511

The guy whose name keeps coming up attached to the opening is Sean Miller from Arizona. Apparently his name was mentioned on Fox Sports radio in D.C. Whomever they hire, that's a great job. The right coach will win big there.

This is definitely a top 25 coaching job in the States. I do not think Miller would go unless there is some UM connection that I'm not aware of - there were multiple with NC State, but not sure with Maryland.

Mike Brey (graduated from DeMatha and lots of ACC experience under coach K), Jim Pastos (asst under Williams), Keith Booth (player and asst under Williams) and Rick Barnes (asst under Williams at OSU) are candidates in my opinion - really low probability that Barnes goes, but I think the others are viable options. I think you'll here the obvious rumors for a little bit - Smart, Dixon, Stevens, etc. I don't think any of those jump, even though UM is a very attractive job in my opinion.

Last year I got in an argument with some Maryland fans about Williams - she wanted him gone, and I felt like UM fans were very unappreciative of him. Many UM fans were getting tired of Gary's recruiting abilities, which is something I found annoying. The man only brought on a competitive team every year, with really successful teams every so often. I consider UM fans for many reasons to be some of the worst in college bball, but I'm biased. They're rude, obnoxious, and not even loyal to their own team.

As an old guy who grew up rooting for the Terps, I am sorry to see Gary Williams go. He did more with less than most big time coaches. He is a great coach and a good recruiter. He also is a principled guy who did not cut ethical corners with the AAU crowd to land players, like many top programs did. In the end, he lost some real stars from his own backyard in the recruiting wars. Still, he fielded competitive teams time after time. If Boyle were not here, I would love to see him at CU.

That coming from a Duke Fan......

Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary.....

I know...I am biased, but I honestly feel that being a Duke fan has also exposed me more to their idiocy. I am different from many Duke fans in that I LIKE Gary Williams. He is a HOFer in my book, and while not a great recruiter, he is an outstanding coach. I CHALLENGE Maryland to find a coach half as good as Gary.

I'm watching his press conference right now, and he's being loudly applauded. It sort of annoys me - they talk **** about him when they have him, but then they treat him like royalty when he leaves. **** Maryland fans...they're fickle pieces of ****. They remind me of Eagles fans, who I lost what little respect I had after the McNabb fiasco.

UM's Athletic Dept is a disgrace in my opinion. I will never buy anything Under Armour because of it. Friedgen built up their football program to be disgracefully pushed out (I understand it may have been getting time to part ways, but there are better ways to have done it). Williams resurrected UM after Bias, and a few seasons after winning a national championship, their fans/boosters started to to want him gone. What ever happened to loyalty and giving people some props for what they've accomplished?

This is a sad day for college bball in my opinion. This was a solid coach, running a solid program...even if this was entirely his choice, he deserved better while at UM.

Mike Brey is going to be top on their list according to internet rumors and ESPN. That will be very interesting. The guy was K's assistant for a long time, so Maryland fans will be rooting for a former Blue Devil. They hate Duke more than CU hates Nebraska in my opinion.

Brey is an interesting case. my two ND buddies are pretty ambivalent about the guy. if his name pops up for an opening, they basically say if he stays fine, if he leaves fine. i really liked the guy at first, but his ND teams seem to be "Pitt Lite"....ranked in the season (sometimes spuriously), tank in the NCAA.

as for the Terp fan hate thing, if the greatest coach in the history of UT football is a former OU QB and Bo Schembechler can play for Woody Hayes at Miami (OH) and then work for him at Ohio State....anything can happen. Put Charlie McBride in this conversation as well.

anyway, it's easy to forget that Williams also had good teams at Ohio State and BC (in the "Golden Age" of the Big East with John Thompson, Massamino, Carneseca, Boeheim etc). pretty comprehensive resume.

Arizona boards freaking out about Miller to Maryland. Their recruiting class is sick, would be a huge loss.

Yeah...when the NC State job opened, I really thought there would be more mutual interest due to Miller's ties to there. But he didn't care for the job...at all...

One of the biggest reasons for the rumors though is that Miller and his wife apparently do NOT like Tuscon. They are East Coast people, and they want to return there - even though the UA job is very good and he's doing well there.

Maryland is a much better job than NC State in my opinion, but I still think Brey ends up being the guy. IF Miller were to take the job though, it'd be a HUGE slap in the face to NC State's AD and ego in my opinion.

..so I'm actually going to quote myself here...but apparently Sean Miller is the new head coach of Maryland.

...WOW...this is a blow to the PAC 12...now who takes over for Miller? UA is a top job as well - I'd put the job over Maryland in terms of stature, but Miller hated Tuscon too much I guess. Lastly, I really am laughing at NC State...not because I hate them; I just find it funny.

scavenge the class!!!!

I got the info from another message board that referred to espn's twitter page...just as an FYI. Lots of rumors that it's a done deal, but apparently they haven't even met yet.

May I refer you to the OP in this thread. :wink2:

Be interesting who UA goes after. You'd think there would be a Lute coaching tree to draw on.

Josh Pastner - he's been their unofficial coach in waiting (was too unproven when Lute stepped down), and he's a fan favorite. I'd very surprised if it's anyone aside Pastner.

i'd be surprised if Miller bails on U of A to the Terps.

you can be #1 in the Pac, but always a secondary/third even....figure to Duke and UNC. and you have to win like a genius to be #3. Wake, NC State, and G Tech are there....

I lived in the DC area...that Maryland job is underrated. Only BCS school in the DC-Baltimore area which has 8 million people versus two BCS schools with LA's 17 million nutjobs.

UMD is a great job - hate the fans, but I have a lot of respect for the school. The rumors are that Miller (or more specifically his wife) hates the area of Tuscon, so that's why he wants to leave. He is an East Coast guy. When NC State and him didn't amount to anything, I thought he'd be wait it out for a HUGE school. I guess UMD is big enough...surprising...

Supposedly all that's missing is the ink on the contract...

Maryland is a program that should be in the tournament every year, the Sweet 16 most years, and make a Final Four run a couple times a decade. They're that well positioned to be great. If I was a college basketball coach, it would be right near the top of my list after the basketball royalty (UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA). Of course, Arizona is also there and maybe even ahead of Maryland. But if dyemeduke is correct about lifestyle considerations, it makes sense as a lateral move with a pay increase.

Maybe the Yow factor really is a big problem with that job.

Latest rumor: Boyle.

haven't heard the Boyle rumor, and I'd doubt it even it was around.

SOO...I know I said Miller was all but done according to internet sources, but apparently Turgeon is next in line. It went - Miller (no), Brey (no), and Wrigt (no). I'm surprised Brey didn't take it, and I'd be surprised though if Turgeon takes the job. UMD is a better job, but Turgeon seems more like a West type of person.

they are melting down at texags.com. supposedly, there will be an announcement at 6:30 (CST, which is about 15 minutes from now MST).

i think it's kind of a lateral move for Turgeon. ATM has the money, maybe not the trad of Maryland.....but deep pockets. the way Texas HS hoops has exploded in the last decade.....DC/Baltimore is always going to have players out of dematha and such....but the diff is not that great these days. ATM doesn't have a FF, but they aren't that far away either. they are a TJ Ford type player away from being a serious contender. i really liked that Lonny Baxter/Juan Dixon/Steve Blake/Chris Wilcox team....but, i also did see them lose to Oklahoma in Norman that same year. visiting my mom and step-dad. Baxter was a great low post player, too bad the NBA doesn't have that position. put Sam Clancy and OU's Aaron McGhee in that list. Jamaal Mosley. good basketball players, but at 6' 7" you have to run the point these days. gone, are the low post moves...turnaround J, jump hook.

i think he stays.

If Turgeon leaves, that immediately bolsters our Texas recruiting. As it stands, I think Boyle avoids directly competing with him for players in his backyard. We've got staff with great ties down there.

Latest rumor: Boyle.

if Turgeon takes the UM job, there are posters at texags.com talking Boyle to Collie Station. i don't think that will happen.....but ATM has money.

i'd rather live in a ditch than middle interstate Texas.

Boyle doesn't need another stepping stone before kansas. He will stay until that job is open. I hope, at least.
