Behind the Scenes of the Pac-12 TV Deal

Despite the strong bid, the conference recognized its long relationship with the two incumbents. The Pac-10's media consultant, Evolution Media's Chris Bevilacqua, proposed an idea to Skipper: What if the two media giants joined forces and combined their bid?
"We have historically worked with ESPN on sublicensing games and events to them and from them," Freer said. "This was done at the conference's request to see if more value could be created for the conference."

Conference definitely has a savvy leadership group, but it also looks like we benefited tremendously from the Fox and ESPN's desire to lockout Comcast/NBC. Partnering for the rights so that we could get such a giant payout while still allowing us to retain games seems to have been the media equivalent an epic "You shall not pass" type of stand.

I'm curious what that means for future negotiations for the league and other conferences, particularly whether if Comcast goes all in right at ESPN for the Big East since they are right in Comcast's footprint. ESPN probably doesn't care all that much about Big East football, but losing their basketball could hurt a bit.

What the heck would ESiPN do if they didn't have east coast teams to hype?

Cats and dogs living together. Mass hysteria!

All I can say is wow. Scott and staff approached this with such a well researched and aggressive perspective that it actually shows what can be done when given the right leadership and planning.

the best part is renegotiate a year before the SEC and way before the Big 10. Comcast/NBC might be so desperate for a football deal then we can surpass $30 million a year.

Great Scott is one of the best things to happen to CU in years. The man in all of his infinate wisdom has to be the envy of the rest of the CFB world. I hope he stays with the Pac 12 for a long long time. If this had been Bebee trying to negotiate a TV contract, the Buffs and the rest of the Pac 12 would be in ruins. Has anyone noticed that Bebee has been very low key. He's probably still making promises he can't keep.

The best way that all of us Pac-12 fans can thank Larry Scott and Co. for all they have done for our teams is to start demanding NOW to get the Pac-12 Network.

Yes, I know there is no such thing, and that we know nothing about their plans. But cable operators and dish providers will start paying attention and be that much more amenable to putting it on basic tiers if we overload them with demands starting now.

Think big tante. We should be making $30 million plus by that point with Pac 12 network/international media/streaming media deals set up by Scott. Let's go for $50 million a year.
