New Daily Camera article by Kyle Ringo has the details.

Brundage is graduating from Rice this month and doing so with eligibility remaining allows him to transfer anywhere without having to sit out a year.

The article goes on to confirm Logan Gray, the 1-year WR transfer for Georgia, will also be a Buff following graduation this month.

Welcome to the Buffs, Mark!

Very nice. While I have my doubts that Gray can learn a system and contribute with basically only fall camp, punters don't need to learn new systems. Plus a degree from Rice and football at CU. Good job kid.

The Camera article says Gray is graduating, but I thought the issue was whether Gray would be accepted into the Colorado business graduate program, and that he had not yet heard if he would be accepted. Has that changed ...?

I got the same impression when I read the article this morning.

My understanding is that his paperwork was being expedited (as was Brundage's) for graduate admissions. Ringo had written about that about 3 weeks ago, saying that Gray was planning to come but had to wait on admissions. Brundage was in the same boat, but had received less pub. Anyway, this new article made declarative statements with no qualifiers that these 2 guys are coming to CU. From what I know of him, Ringo would not have done that if it wasn't on like donkey kong.

Questions about the article: Brundage averaged 44.2 yards on 26 punts, Grossnickle averaged 37.5 net yards per punt. Are those comparable? I'm thinking that Brundage's numbers don't include return yards, where Grossnickle's do. And I'm also thinking that even if they do, that Brundage's return team wasn't "cliniced" by Riddle. What I'm getting at is that we need competition at the position so this is good regardless, but it's not clear that Brundage is an immediate upgrade.

I also wonder why O'Neill isn't going to be in the fall camp. Is this just normal student stuff, like he won't be around because he doesn't get AD support and school hasn't started? It sure seems like the extra couple of weeks (or whatever it is) would be a big help to him.

Zach's average was 39.47 (75th out of 94 qualifying punters in 2010). http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2010&rpt=IA_playerpunt&site=org&div=IA&dest=O

Brundage didn't have enough punts to qualify, but his 44.2 average would have been good for #10 in the nation in 2009. http://web1.ncaa.org/mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2009&rpt=IA_playerpunt&site=org&div=IA&dest=O

Net Avg includes all punts, so fair catches and punts that are downed or go out of bounds get included.

Zach's "Net Avg" was 35.7 for 2010. He also had 11 of 60 punts downed inside the 20 (18.3%) and had 2 over 50 yards (3.3%). He also had 2 blocked.http://www.cubuffs.com/fls/600/gameday/2010/custats.pdf?SPSID=3844&SPID=255&DB_OEM_ID=600

I couldn't find Brundage's "Net Avg" for 2009. He had 8 of 26 punts downed inside the 20 (30.8%) and had 9 over 50 yards (34.6%). I also found a write-up on his NFL chances here.

Dramatic improvement on kick off power, approach footwork, leveraging from the plant and creating more foot speed thru impact. Working on leg action efficiency wants to use the upper leg muscle groups too much at times and not creating the whip he needs. Improved his kick off's inside 5 and some into the endzone 3.7-3.98 hang time and improved his punting accerleration thru and out impact

Rice-- Walk-on who took over the kickoff duties down the stretch to earn his first letter.
2008-- Took over kickoff duties against Army...opponents averaged 14.7 yards per return over the last four games (20.2 in the first eight games).

Also, don't forget that he was kicking at sea level in humidity while at Rice and at C-USA opponents. Still, 5 yards a punt better than Grossnickle. This is a nice upgrade for us.

Thanks for the research, Nik, 5 yards is pretty good, and both Grossnickle and O'Neill will get a chance to get coached up.

Looks like Embree has no or little confidence in our kicking game.

That would make him, uh.....what's the word? Hmmmmm........Oh yeah!

It's so nice to have a competent coaching staff again.
They see an obvious weakness and find a guy who is a huge upgrade with the experience to get it done under pressure right away. Outstanding!

No personal offense to Grossnickle.....but I certainly hope Brundage can come in and make the best of that eligibility as we can't afford the same quality we've seen recently

Pretty hard to ever be good @ ST, no matter what the emphasis by the coaching staff, with the same kicking we've seen the past few years

Hopefully it will be good for Grossnickle. Bring in somebody to take the heat for a year and let him concentrate on getting his technique developed to a point where he can be a consistent, effective college punter with two years of eligibility left. Also let him focus on KOs and again get the consistency.

Zack has a big time leg but like a lot of other guys the genius from Boise and his crew screwed him up. This could be a big step in getting him back on track.
